Belarus:
Belarusian history links a dismal present to a more encouraging past
Belarus's election. Archive 13.09.2001. From The Economist
print edition There are few better antidotes to despair in Eastern Europe than an old town soaked with good ideas from long ago. Even in the darkest years of communist rule, Czechs, Poles, Balts and others could take comfort from the visible signs of happier days. That is much harder for the 10m people of Belarus, who face five more years of stagnation and autocracy under their newly re-elected president, Alexander Lukashenka. On September 9th he claimed an implausible 76% of the vote in a presidential election that western observers say fell well short of international standards of fairness. Compared with its western neighbours, Belarus often seems a featureless country, both aesthetically and in national character. What two world wars did not destroy was mostly rounded off by Soviet planners and russifiers. Belarus managed barely nine months of independent statehood in 1918-too short to sustain the patriotic zing that helped other East Europeans to shake off Communist rule. History helps answer two depressing questions. First, why do so many Belarusians-perhaps more than half of them-genuinely think that an autocratic regime based on a bullying personality cult is so fine? After all, even allowing for the election's unfairness, a lot of Belarusians plainly do like Mr. Lukashenka. Second, why are the disgruntled rest, who broadly oppose his style of rule, unable to do anything about it? Even in a fair election Uladzimir Hancharyk, the main opposition candidate, who was officially credited with 15% of the vote, would probably have fared less than brilliantly. Opposition demonstrations against the election-rigging have already fizzled out.

The Jewish community in Belarus is the third-largest in the former Soviet Union, just behind those in Russia and Ukraine. At its heart is the city of Minsk, which is home to some 40,000 Jews. Over the past century, the Jewish community in the area then known as Byelorussia produced some of Zionism’s most celebrated leaders, including Chaim Weizmann and Menachem Begin. Byelorussia was also the birthplace of artist Marc Chagall. Until 1939, the western-most region of Byelorussia was ruled by Poland. The population in this area was nearly 90 percent Jewish. Almost all of these Jews perished in the Shoah . Today, scores of elderly Jews reside in Belarus. Many are Holocaust survivors who cannot afford the basic necessities of food and medicine. Casting further shadows on their lives is the continued cleanup from the Chernobyl disaster. JDC’s renewed involvement in Belarus began in 1989, with the advent of Glasnost . Between 1989 and 2001, 70,409 Jews made aliyah . Those who remain in Belarus – either by choice or by circumstance – are creating a vibrant and expanding Jewish community, despite incredible challenges and ongoing political and economic uncertainties.

Welcome to the first web page about Vitebsk (Belarus)
Vitebsk (Viciebs or Witebsk) is a Belarussian city situated on the North-East of the Belarus in the land of glacier lakes on the picturesque banks of the three rivers: the Zakhodnyaya Dzvina (in Russian - Zapadnaya Dvina, in old Belarusian -Rubon, in Latvian - Daugava) river, the Vitba and the Luchesa river . It is one of the oldest settlements in Europe. According to a legend Vitebsk was founded in 974 by Princess Olga of Kiev after successful campaign against the Baltic tribe Jacviahi . But the first information about the town in chronicles was in 1021. It had sprung up on a busy road "from Varangians to Greeks" and stood witness to a great number of glorious events and heroic deeds. Since early times the town had been known as a " warrior ". So it is not by chance that its ancient emblem featured a horseman holding a spear and shield.

HISTORY
Sometimes it is hard to imagine, that there is great multitude of people around the Earth united by one great Person. This Man was looking just like all of us, yet He performed inconceivable miracles. Of course, everybody heard of Him. Jesus proved indeed that He is the Christ, He is the one and only real Lord. And those who believed in Christ as in the Savior are the part of the great God's family. In this family all of us - orthodox, catholic, protestant christians - are brothers and sisters. God calls his children everybody who believes in Jesus Christ and trusts in Him (I John 5:1). "One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all." (Eph.4:6)
History of the church:
Pastor recollects In 1991 in Minsk several believers started to come together. It was the beginning of the ministry of the Church of Jesus Christ in Minsk, Full-Gospel church. God chose Benjamin and Nelli Brukh to do this work to build this local church in Minsk. From the story of Benjamin and Nelli: In January 1991 we were called by God to study in the Bible School "Christ to the World" that was in the Latvian city Jelgava. This school was headed by Steve Bradkovich, man of amazing faith who committed his life to minister to God and to people. Our teachers filled with love and compassion had great vision - to create thousands of churches across the Soviet Union and to help people. They were able to transfer this vision into us, their students.

Early History through the Soviet Era
The region now constituting Belarus was colonized by East Slavic tribes from the 5th to the 8th cent. It fell (9th cent.) under the sway of Kievan Rus and was later (12th cent.) subdivided into several Belarussian principalities forming part of the Kievan state. Kiev's destruction by the Mongols in the 13th cent. facilitated the conquest (early 14th cent.) of Belarus by the dukes of Lithuania. The region became part of the grand duchy of Lithuania, which in 1569 was merged with Poland. The large Jewish population (later decimated by the Germans during World War II) settled in Belarus in the 14th cent. The region flourished under Lithuanian rule; but after the Polish-Lithuanian union Belarus lost its relative importance, and its ruling classes became thoroughly Polonized. In Mar., 1918, the Belarussian National Rada in Minsk proclaimed the region an independent republic; but in Jan., 1919, the Soviet government proclaimed a Belorussian Soviet Socialist Republic at Smolensk, and soon the Red Army occupied all of Belarus. In 1921, the Treaty of Riga, which ended the Soviet-Polish War, awarded W Belarus to Poland. The eastern and larger part formed the Belorussian SSR when the USSR was formally established in 1922. In Sept., 1939, the Soviet army overran W Belarus and incorporated it into the Belorussian SSR. Occupied by the Germans during World War II, Belorussia was one of the most devastated areas of the USSR. In 1945 its western border was adjusted slightly in favor of Poland, but the 1939 frontier remained essentially unchanged. The republic has had a separate seat in the United Nations since 1945.
