Early History
Origins. "Belarus's origins can be traced from the emergence in the late ninth century A.D. of Kievan Rus', the first East Slavic state. After the death of its ruler, Prince Yaroslav the Wise, in 1054, Kievan Rus' split into a number of principalities, each centered on a city. One, Polatsk (PAH-lahtsk, located 120 miles north northeast of Minsk, [Polotsk in Russian]), became the nucleus of modern-day Belarus" (Unless stated otherwise, the following quotes come from Library of Congress Country StudyBelarus, 29 Sep 1995). Lithuanian Control. "In 1240, after the Tatar overthrow of Kiev, the dominant principality of Kievan Rus', Belorussia (bye-loh-RAH-shahn) and part of Ukraine came under the control of Lithuania. The resulting state was called the Grand Duchy (DUCH-ee) of Lithuania, Rus', and Samogitia (sa-mah- JI-shah). Because territories inhabited by East Slavs made up about 90 percent of the Grand Duchy, they exerted a great cultural influence on the new state. Official business was conducted in a Slavic language (a predecessor of both Belorussian and Ukrainian, a liturgical language of Orthodox and Uniate churches in Slavic lands) based on Old Church Slavonic, and the law code was based on that of Kievan Rus'."

(See Religious History of the Ukraine for a fuller treatment of orthodox origins and survival under Communism) Folk Religion Dvoeverie (dvoh-yeh-vyer-EE-yeh). The term dvoeverie describes popular Slavic religion. When pagan beliefs and practices are preserved under the veneer of Christianity, that is dvoeverie. In the borderlands and within rural communities, pagan survivals remained. Some argue that for the masses, even to this present day, dvoeverie characterizes popular religion. (See "Dvoeverie and Popular Religion" by Eve Levin in Seeking God: The Recovery of Religious Identity in Orthodox Russia, Ukraine, and Georgia , ed. Stephen Batalden, pp. 31-33). Traditional Belarusian belief concerning the afterlife. Belarusian folk religion saw the next world as divided into two separate partsheaven to the south (with an eternal summer) and hell to the north. God assigned people according to their good or bad deeds. Dead ancestors (dzadi) were honored four times a year with commemorative feasts. On these occasions, the deceased returned for the meal. Some food (three pieces or tablespoons) was always left for the departed.

Welcome to the History of Belarus Belarus is a country that located in the geographical center of Europe. It borders in the West with Poland, in the South - with Ukraine, in the East - with Russia and in the Northwest with Lithuania and Latvia (see the map ). It is much larger than many countries of the world - Greece, Portugal, Austria, Cuba, Lebanon, etc. The population is more than 10 million. The history of Belarus begins about 100 - 40 thousand years ago when ancient people, overcoming severe climate of the Glacial Age, have lodged on the southern territories of Belarus. In written sources the Belarusian lands are mentioned in the 6th century B.C. Herodotus of Halikarnas wrote in his “History” about the mysterious people of Neuri that had occupied the territories to the North of Scythia: T he Neurian customs are like the Scythian. One generation before the attack of Darius they were driven from their land by a huge multitude of serpents which invaded them. Of these some were produced in their own country, while others, and those by far the greater number, came in from the deserts on the north. Suffering grievously beneath this scourge, they quitted their homes, and took refuge with the Budini. It seems that these people are conjurers: for both the Scythians and the Greeks who dwell in Scythia say that every Neurian once a year becomes a wolf for a few days, at the end of which time he is restored to his proper shape. Not that I believe this, but they constantly affirm it to be true, and are even ready to back their assertion with an oath.

There is no more happiness in this world, brothers, than if a man has intelligence and education. Only then will he manage to live in wealth and only then, praying God, will he deserve Heaven, for once having enriched his mind with science, he will develop his heart and love his people. Kastus Kalinouski
Introduction
The Republic of Belarus is one of what is called for convenience the former Soviet republics. This country is relatively new to most of the world, and people in the West as a rule only know what rare comments in modern history textbooks can tell them. These comments are mostly related to the years after the 1917 revolution in Russia. However, the independence of Belarus is not occassional and even not the first in its history. Belarus has its own language, culture, heritage and, of course, history, as does any other country of the world. The reason why Belarus is still generally unknown to the world is that most of its historical facts were hidden or artificially assimilated with Russian and Soviet histories. The current situation in Belarus does not encourage a lot of information about the republic to be disseminated. I myself have learned most of the facts a relatively short time ago, when true historic evidence of Belarus past became available. I hope that these notes will be helpful for all interested people who are eager to find out more about the history of this old and original country.

BELORUSSIA, territory located between the rivers Neman (west) and Dnieper (east) and the rivers Pripet (south) and Dvina (north). Between the 14th and 18th centuries part of Poland-Lithuania, from the partitions of Poland (1772–95) until the 1917 revolution it was part of the "northwestern region" of Russia, and much of it was included in the three "guberniyas" (provinces) of Minsk, Mogilev, and Vitebsk. Under Soviet rule Belorussia became a political entity as the Belorussian Soviet Socialist Republic. After the dissolution of the Soviet Union, the area was called Belarus and was a CIS republic. top
Up to Soviet Rule
Down to the period of the partitions of Poland the communities in Belorussia were constantly exposed to the danger of Russian incursions, which were accompanied by wholesale massacres and forced conversions. Such occurred in 1563 in Polotsk, and in many other communities between 1648 and 1655. The relative strength of the Belorussian communities in the middle of the 18th century is shown by the amounts levied on them as listed in the tax register of the Council of Lithuania for 1761: for the communities in the eastern part of Belorussia, 16,500 zlotys; Polotsk and environs, 3,000 zlotys; the area around Minsk (including 40 small communities), 4,260 zlotys; Slutsk and its environs, 2,420 zlotys; Druya and its environs, 750 zlotys; Nowogrodek, 300 zlotys. According to the government census of 1766, there were 62,800 taxpaying Jews living in Belorussia, forming 40% of Lithuanian Jewry. The largest communities were in Minsk (1,396 Jewish inhabitants) and Pinsk (1,350).

World Scouting News, March, 1998, reports The Belarusian National Scout Association became the 149th member of the World Organization of the Scout Movement. Membership became effective on March 13, 1998. Belarus is the former Soviet Socialist Republic of Belorussia which was part of the USSR before its collapse. In december 1991, Belarus became a founder member of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS). The capital city is Minsk. The Belarusian National Scout Association includes more than 7,500 members, both boys and girls, in 3 branches ranging from 8 to 17 years of age. They are spread all over the country but the majority of members come from the major cities. The first Belarusian Scout groups were created in 1909, just after the founding of Scouting in the England in 1907. Scouting's development stopped during the Soviet control. Scouting was reborn and reorganized in 1989. In december 1991, a National co-ordinating Committee was set up under the aegis of WOSM in order to promote the unification of the various Scout Associations which appeared in different parts of the country. Scouting grew steadily with support from the Christian Orthodox and Catholic Churches, aswell as the Youth Commission of the Parliament. In March 1997, as a result of a long process of reconciling divergent nationalistic trends in Scouting, a constituent assembly was held in Minsk. This assembly approved the creation of a united National Scout Association under the name, "BELARUSKAYA NATSIANALNAYA SKAUTSKAYA ASATSIYATSIA".

ADVERTISING INFORMATION Gomel History Founded by a Radimichi tribe many centuries ago, the settlement that would later bear the name Gomel appeared on the right bank of the river Sozh. Abounding in water, the winding river surrounded the settlement from three sides. In the nearby areas, primeval forests, full of deep lakes and boggy swamps, spread for hundreds of kilometres. Countless flocks of birds and a great variety of wild animals inhabited the dense woods. Among them were boars, elks, goats, deer, bears, wolves, lynxes, foxes, and badgers. Lakes and rivers, adorned with reed, were home to an abundant variety of fish, wild geese, ducks, and swans. On the banks, beavers hustled restlessly around the fallen trees... According to ancient chronicles, this is how Gomel and its surroundings appeared several centuries ago. Although the exact date of Gomel's founding and the precise origin of the city's name have not been identified, Gomel was first mentioned in the chronicles around the first half of 12th century. As such, Gomel is one of the oldest towns in modern day Belarus. In accordance with recent research that suggests that Gomel was in fact founded in 1142, the city celebrated its 855th anniversary in 1997 with various festivities and special commemorative events. After being accepted by Kievan Rus' in 988 under Prince Vladimir, Christianity gradually penetrated into the lands of Radimichi as well. Prior to this, Radimichi held pagan beliefs. They prayed and made sacrifices to wooden and stone idols, trees, and birds, which they believed had godly qualities. They also deified such natural forces and occurrences as sun, wind, and thunder. Perun, the god of thunder and lightning, was their main god. To this day Gomel and the surrounding areas carry signs of these old pagan beliefs in the names of different locations and villages. In this manner, a small island near the village Kuzminichi is called Perunovskiy. Similarly, the village Volosovichi is believed to have received its name from the name of a pagan god Volos, patron of cattle.

Others look at a hill-fort known as Haradysczy During the era of Viking expansion along the East European waterways, many towns and principalities were ruled over by Scandinavian warlords; in the 9th century the lands of Polacak were raided by two Viking princes Askold and Dir, and by the 10th century a Prince Ravhalod( Norse : Ragnvald) reigned over the Belarusian principality of which early Minsk formed part.
