Background Behcet disease is a rare disorder characterized by recurrent oral and genital ulceration, eye lesions, and multiple skin lesions. The first modern description was in the 1930s by a Turkish dermatologist, Hulusi Behcet, who noted the triad of aphthous oral ulcers, genital lesions, and recurrent eye inflammation. A recent consensus conference identified several criteria to establish the diagnosis. Some of these parameters include: Mucocutaneous lesions (oral ulcers-recurrent, at least three times per year) Patients must also meet two of the following four criteria:
Recurrent genital ulcerations
Eye lesions (uveitis or retinal vasculitis)
Positive pathergy test (trauma induced lesions)
Skin lesions as diagnostic of Behcet's disease The skin lesions range from leukocytoclastic vasculitis, pustular dermatitis, and clinical lesions resembling Sweet's syndrome, pyoderma gangrenosum, and erythema nodosum. Some investigators believe only cutaneous lesions containing infiltrates of neutrophils around blood vessels is diagnostic. This disease is characterized by recurrence and relapse. Like many vasculitides, this disease may affect multiple organs. See the outline below for a detailed discussion.

  • Behçet’s disease is common in the Middle East, Asia, and Japan, but rare in the United States. In Middle Eastern and Asian countries, the disease affects more men than women. In the United States, the opposite is true. Behçet’s disease tends to develop in people in their twenties or thirties, but people of all ages can develop it.
What is Behçet’s Disease? The disease was first described in 1937 by Dr. Helusi Behçet, a professor of dermatology in Istanbul. Behçet’s disease is now recognized as a chronic condition that causes sores or ulcers in the mouth and on the genitals, and inflammation in parts of the eye. In some people, the disease also results in arthritis (swollen, painful, stiff joints) and inflammation of the digestive tract, brain, and spinal cord. Most people with Behçet’s disease can lead normal lives and control their symptoms with proper medicine, rest, and exercise. Doctors can use many medicines to relieve pain, treat symptoms, and prevent complications. When treatment is effective, flares usually become less frequent after 1 or 2 years. Many patients eventually enter a period of remission. In some people, however, treatment does not relieve symptoms, and gradually more serious symptoms such as eye disease may occur. Serious symptoms may appear months or years after the first signs of Behçet’s disease.

Behcet's Disease
The disease was given the name by it's modern discoverer Hulusi Behcet, a professor of Dermatology in Istanbul, although it had been documented under different names from as early as ancient Grecian times. Behcet's Disease is a rare, chronic, lifelong rheumatic illness, initiated through the body's immune system being over-reactive, and producing unpredictable episodes of inflammation which affect mostly the small blood vessels. Symptoms may occur wherever there is a blood supply. Whilst there is no cure most can be suppressed by the right and relevant treatment. To date the cause is still unknown. It is not known if the disease is hereditary, but this is suspected (some families do have the disease in different generations). It is not thought to be an infection. The disease generally begins when patients are in their 20's or 30's, although all age groups have been documented with the disease, including children. The disease is diagnosed based on the finding of recurrent mouth ulcerations combined with any two of the following: Eye inflammation, genital ulcerations, a positive pathergy test, or skin abnormalities.

The exact cause is unknown. It is believed that an autoimmune reaction may cause blood vessels to become inflamed, but it is not clear what triggers this reaction.
Other symptoms may include arthritis, blood clots, and inflammation in the central nervous system and digestive organs.

chronic Eye inflammation, which occurs in 70% of cases, is considered one of the major criteria upon which the diagnosis is based. Its complications are frequently sight threatening and require constant attention. The ocular disease is characterized by unpredictable, repetitive, explosive inflammatory attacks, which can subside spontaneously (without treatment). Between attacks, there is little or no evidence of inflammation in the eyes. In one third of cases, the front of the eye may be involved alone, presenting as severe anterior uveitis with

Why should I add a "Promote Behcet's Disease Awareness" Riboon to my site?
There is currently no known cause or cure for Behcer's Disease. The disease is not commonly known, and smaller numbers of people have it. Low numbers of carriers means little research is done. Many with Behcet's may not know someone else who has it. With this ribbon, those who have it can meet one another and discuss their common ground. They can support one another and share treatment ideas.
If the word gets out, more people can learn about the disease, and more funds may be raised to help the patients of Behcet's Disease. Please help make the world aware of this rare and ruthless disease.

Behcet's syndrome is a rare multisystem inflammatory disorder characterized by ulcers affecting the mouth and genitals, various skin lesions, and abnormalities affecting the eyes. Symptoms include areas of abnormal skin changes (lesions) of the mouth and genitals that tend to disappear and recur spontaneously. Inflammation of the outer fibrous layers of tissue (tunic) that surround the eyes (posterior uveitis) also affects individuals with Behcet's syndrome. Additional systems of the body may also be affected including the joints, blood vessels, central nervous system, and/or digestive tract.
