powered by FreeFind Updated on; Behcet's Disease is a chronic rheumatic illness, initiated through the bodies immune system being over-reactive, and producing unpredictable episodes of inflammation which affect mostly the small blood vessels. Symptoms may occur wherever there is a blood supply. Most can be suppressed by the right and relevant treatment. To date the cause is still unknown. It is not known if the disease is hereditary, but this is suspected (some families do have the disease in different generations). It is not thought to be an infection. As a caring organisation, we want to give you the opportunity to stay up to date with our group and the information we provide. To enable us to maintain this site and bring you up to date information please consider making a donation. You will see links regarding donations dotted around the site. Behcets Disease
By Meghan O'Toole "I think I have genital herpes," Sara cried to me on the phone. Sara was out of town visiting her parents when she experienced pain while urinating. She inspected her genital region and found multiple ulcers on her labia that looked like canker sores. Sara called her gynecologist immediately to make an appointment for the following week when she got back in town. During the time between finding the ulcers and her appointment, Sara researched genital herpes on the Internet and tried to figure out how she contracted a sexually transmitted disease.

A-Z Illnesses and Conditions
Behcet's Disease By Dr Rob Hicks Attacks any blood vessels The diagnosis takes time Don't mistake it Hippocrates was a wise physician who over 2000 years ago described many medical conditions. One of these was Behcet's Syndrome. However, it was only many years later in 1937 that Professor Dr Hulusi Behcet, a Turkish dermatologist, accurately identified the disease and gave his name to it. Attacks any blood vessels Behcet's is pronounced differently around the globe with some of the popular versions being Beh Shetts, Beh Chetts, or Beh Shay. It's a rare autoimmune disorder that causes the small blood vessels anywhere around the body to become inflamed. This is called vasculitis and where this occurs in the body dictates the symptoms a person experiences. Although Behcet's can affect someone of any age and has been diagnosed in young infants and people over the age of seventy, it most commonly affects people between the ages of twenty and forty years old. In Western Europe and North America women are more commonly affected than men. However, in the Silk Route countries of the Mediterranean, Middle East, and Far East men are more affected by Behcet's than women.

BEHCET'S DISEASE
Ralph Snyderman DEFINITION. Behcet's disease is an inflammatory disorder of unknown etiology characterized by recurrent oral and genital aphthous ulcers, ocular inflammation, and skin lesions of erythema nodosum and acneiform eruptions. Behcet's disease also frequently involves the joints, the central nervous system, and the gastrointestinal tract. I NCIDENCE AND PREVALENCE. Behcet's disease is common in northern Japan, Korea, China, and the Middle East. In Japan the current prevalence is 1 per 10,000. The frequency in the United States is far less. An annual incidence of 1 per 300,000 was determined for Olmstead County, Minnesota. The disease does not occur frequently in Japanese Americans, perhaps suggesting environmental factors in addition to genetic predisposition in the etiology of this illness. ETIOLOGY AND PATHOGENESIS. No infectious agent has been consistently isolated, although a viral etiology is suspected. Sera frequently contain circulating immune complexes of the IgA and IgG variety, as well as elevated levels of chernotactic activity for leukocytes. Antibodies reactive against oral mucosal cells have been found, and factors produced by patient's lymphocytes are toxic for oral mucosal cells. However, these findings are also present in individuals with recurrent aphthous stornatitis alone. Serum complement levels in Behcet's disease are usually elevated, particularly levels of C9. Most patients with neurologic involvement have demyelinating antibodies in their sera. There is a strong association of HLA-135 with Behqet's disease in Japan and in the Mediterranean area. Heavy metal exposure, certain foods (particularly English walnuts), and toxic factors such as organophosphates have initiated attacks in some individuals.
