Miner Bees
General Information Biology Other Resources Miner Bees Anthophora abrupta , Anthophoridae: Hymenoptera
Miner bees (or chimney bees) are one of many familiar black and yellow summertime bees often mistaken for bumble bees. These, however, are solitary bees that do not collect honey and do not sting, though they could bite if handled roughly. They are garden pollinators and serve an increasingly important role as honey bee populations decline. Gardeners can actually enhance miner bee populations by providing dried mud blocks for nesting.
Biology
Miner bees are found across most of the eastern US from March to September depending upon climate. In NC they emerge in May and are active about 8 weeks. They normally nest in bare, hard soil, more often on steep slopes or vertical surfaces of adobe or hard clay. They have also been collected burrowing between stones of old chimneys built with non-cement mortar. Some of the flowers they have been recorded visiting are azalea, Oenothera, Penstemon, Rubus, Asclepias, Cornus, Delphinium, Iris, Monarda, Nepeta, Rosa, Diospyros, Melilotus, Trifolium and Pastinaca (parsnip). The miner bee nests in colonies of separate tunnels excavated into the hard clay. Females construct the nest, softening the hard clay with regurgitated water and removing clay particles with the mandibles. Most females build a single nest, but a few will build a second or even a third. Once the tunnel is about an inch in length, the female begins to carry clay pellets to the entrance to construct an exterior chimney. Tunnel lengths average almost 4.5 inches and chimney lengths vary, sometimes reaching more than three inches. Within each tunnel, five to eight cells are excavated and then lined with a clear fluid released from the Dufour's gland on the abdomen. This lining adds strength and water-proofing to the cell. Last instar larvae may also obtain nutrients by consuming this layer.

Introduction
This web site is about the bees found living in Florida, USA. It is designed to help facilitate their identification by serving as a virtual reference collection and to help point out the key features used in identifying bees to family, genus, and species. It is organized taxonomically-bees are grouped by family, subfamily, genus, subgenus, and species. The links at the top of each page can take you to the linked pages within each group, up one level, and to my home page. Due to the many images found associated with the species, a high speed internet connection is highly recommended (cable modem, dsl, or higher speed). The bees of Florida include members of six families of bees, the Colletidae (26 taxa), Melittidae (2 taxa), Andrenidae (63 taxa), Halictidae (66 taxa), Megachilidae (72 taxa), and

Nuisance Wasps and Bees
by W.S. Cranshaw
Quick Facts...
  • Most wasps develop by feeding on insects. Bees develop on a diet of nectar or pollen.
  • Almost all insect stings result from yellowjackets and an insect newly established in the state, the European paper wasp.
  • Yellowjackets, hornets and paper wasps make nests of paper. Honey bees and bumblebees make nests of wax. Solitary bees and wasps nest in holes in the ground, rotten wood or natural cavities. Some wasps even make mud nests.
Wasps and bees can be a serious nuisance problem throughout Colorado, particularly late in the summer when certain yellowjacket wasps forage at garbage and outdoor food areas. In overall balance, however, these insects are beneficial in their activities, particularly as predators of pest insects and as pollinators. It is important to distinguish between the various wasps and bees because their potential as problems and their control differ. Figure 1: Underground yellowjacket nests exposed while digging.

End of Season Profile
One of baseball's mysteries, here: Somehow this team qualified for a playoff slot despite poor pitching, weak defense, and dreadful baserunning. The team featured a handful of talented players, and a bunch of role players. Joe Szekely stitched together a patchwork team and made a respectable season. Kyle Middleton started the summer in the Burlington bullpen, but earned a rotation spot and a 14-5 won/lost record. Chris Tierney also pitched well in the rotation, but was the victim of bad luck. Jorge Vasquez and Barry Armitage both pitched well from the 'pen. No one else pitched well in any role. Second baseman Ruben Gotay had a very good season, and several othersoutfielders Odannys Ayala and James Shanks, and first baseman Chris Fallonall seem solid talents. That's where Szekely's talent ran thin, as the rest of the hitters were generally weak.

CARPENTER BEES
Insect Note ENT/rsc-4
C arpenter bees are large, black and yellow bees frequently seen in spring hovering around the eaves of a house or the underside of a deck or porch rail. They are most often mistaken for bumble bees, but differ in that they have a black shiny tail section. The carpenter bee is so-called because of its habit of excavating tunnels in wood with its strong jaws. The round half-inch diameter entrance holes are usually found on the underside of a board. A tell-tale trace of coarse sawdust is often found on the surface beneath the hole.
Carpenter bee excavating a nest in treated deck rail. Wooden decks, overhangs and other exposed wood on houses are prime targets. Painted and treated woods are less preferred, but they are by no means immune to attack. Unpainted or stained cedar, cypress and redwood shingles and siding are also attacked despite their pest-resistant reputations. Carpenter bees, like their distant relatives, the carpenter ants, differ from termites in that they do not consume the wood as food. They simply excavate tunnels for nesting sites.

Train from New Street to Carlisle. Carlisle smells of dog poo. Claire V. excited, not necessarily about the smell of dog poo just the trip in general. After 2 weeks of glorious weather, sky looks ver dark. Another little train to St Bees . We get off train, start walking, heavens open, waterproofs come out. We walk up and along the headland . V. nice. Sun come out. Sweating starts. Waterproofs come off. “Claire look at that fast moving fog coming this way”. “Oh dear” Waterproofs back on, hail comes down. Spot lighthouse and realise it’s not far. Go to beach (Fleswick) in sunshine, Climb out in rain. Passed St Bees Lighthouse and arrived @ TarnFlatt Hall. Paid £4 each for bunkhouse. Fairly meagre with “cooking slab” but did have shower. Now 18.20 and waiting for pasta and sausage.

Information sheet 21 from the University of Arizona. A single page describing the range of wild pollinating bees.

INFORMATION SHEET 21
Solitary Bees
With the arrival of Africanized honey bees in Arizona, there has been an increased interest in bees, wasps, and other flying creatures. One group of insects that have come to our attention are the so-called solitary bees. Not all bees live in large family groups like honey bees. In fact of all the bee species, over 90% are solitary bees. Female solitary bees prepare their own nest in the ground, in cracks or crevices in walls, or in wood. They gather nectar and pollen as food for their own offspring, and provide little or no further care after their eggs are laid. Solitary bees come in many different sizes, colors and shapes. Common solitary bees are mason bees, plasterer bees, digger bees, sweat bees and carpenter bees. They vary in color from basic black to bright metallic green, blue or red. Some solitary bees superficially resemble wasps. Although most live alone, some solitary bees build nests in groups or "aggregations." Solitary bees may nest close together because the site is particularly choice. Other species regularly nest near bees of the same kind, but each female builds its own nest. In a few species, several female bees use a single entrance hole in the ground, but each female builds her own chamber off a common tunnel. Have you ever seen the neat circles cut from leaves of roses or bougainvillea? Those are caused by a solitary bee known as the leafcutter bee. The leafcutter bee uses the leaf pieces to line her nest in a hollow twig, or any other opening about the diameter of a pencil. Favorite sites for nesting include tubes of lawn furniture or boring into urethane foam roofing material. Once the female has built her nest, she provisions it with a mixture of pollen and nectar. She lays her egg on the food. The egg hatches into a tiny grub that consumes the food over the period of a week or two, and then pupates. Depending on the time of year and the species of bee, the newly emerged adult bees may fly out of the nest to start new nests, or may stay underground protected in the nest until the following spring.

BEES 2.0 Software Tool BEES 2.0 On the Way, New Problems Emerge From Vol. 8, No 11. November, 1999 Version 2.0 of the BEES software tool (for "Building Environmental and Economic Sustainability"), a building materials analysis program developed by the U.S. government's National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), is due out in late Spring of 2000. (See EBN Vol. 7, No. 5 for a review of version 1.0.) While the new version will reportedly address some of the concerns raised about version 1.0, it leaves some others unresolved. More significant, new information has emerged about an underlying flaw in the methodology used in BEES that makes the default environmental scores computed by this software highly questionable. A report for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's National Risk Management Research Laboratory by respected life-cycle analysis (LCA) scientist Dr. Gregory Norris outlines a significant logical weakness that somehow eluded previous technical reviews of BEES. LCA involves the study of environmental inputs, outputs, and their impacts associated with a particular product or group of products throughout their life cycle, from origin as raw materials to end-of-life or reuse (cradle-to-grave or cradle-to-cradle). The problem in BEES has to do with the method used to combine performance ratings from different environmental impact categories, or comparing "apples to oranges." This process requires
