Bees
Order Hymenoptera
Bees belong to the insect Order Hymenoptera, which includes wasps, ants and sawflies. In Australia there are four main bee families: Apidae, Colletidae, Halictidae and Megachilidae. Many of these bees are solitary nesters, while others may share a nest. Others are fully social species. Although some bees sting, they are not considered to be pests as they play an important role in the Australian environment as key pollinators of many native plant species. Indigenous people have long used both the honey and the nests of native bees as valuable sources of food and wax. Commercially, the introduced Honey Bee is vital to the production of honey, but the cultivation of native bee species is also being investigated as a viable industry.
Honey Bee
Apis mellifera
Family Apidae
Like the European Wasp , the Honey Bee is an introduced social insect. Worker bees visit flowers in search of pollen during the summer months, and may sting if handled or caught in clothing. They are particularly attracted to clover flowers, so it is wise to be cautious if walking through clover patches. Like wasps, Honey Bees will vigorously defend their nests. Honey Bee stings are barbed and, when a person is stung, the sting (with venom gland attached) will stick in the skin and tear away from the bee. This injury kills the bee, but the venom gland continues to pump venom through the sting, so it should be removed as soon as possible. Do not squeeze it as this will force more venom into the wound. The sting is best removed by scraping it out with a fingernail.

Honey bee numbers have declined dramatically across much of the United States, due in large part to the varroa mite, the tracheal mite, and the viruses vectored by the latter species. Honey bee decline is a direct threat to agricultural production, and this Web site has been established to help disseminate information on pollinators. We encourage individuals and researchers to contribute new information on pollinators such as the honey bee, the hornfaced bee and the blue orchard mason bee. We currently expect to post new material within two weeks of its receipt. Welcome to readers of The Furrow magazine. We hope you use this site to supplement information in the November article, "Calling All Pollinators". 157. The Coast To Coast Bike Ride
by Nick Bauer of a trip by five friends following the Coast to Coast route by bike from St bees Head to Robin Hoods Bay. Five day trip, staying at youth hostels. Clear maps and descriptions of the route.......
    http://homepages.tesco.net/~c2c/
Coast Coast This site was constructed
by me, Nick Bauer. The coast 2 coast is a mixture of road
and off-road cycling from St Bees Head to
Robin Hoods Bay with a distance
    of two hundred and
    ten miles.
    The route takes you across
    spectacular scenery, starting in
The Lake District, crossing The Pennines
and finally the North Yorkshire Moors. Okay, so it's been nearly two years since our quest to ride from one side of the country to the other, but here it is, an insight to what is known to walkers and cyclists as the Coast 2 Coast. Having completed The Three Peak Twenty Four Hour challenge the previous year in 1996 and by coming to the end of that year the urge was there to do something in the following year. So thinking caps on and we came up with the coast 2 coast ride. Not a new thing I hear you say, but hey its out there to be done!! The challenge bit comes from not doing it in seven to ten days as suggested, but in five days. Five days I hear you say, where's the challenge in that? Well add to myself, four other candidates of varying fitness levels and a van driver things start to hot up a bit. The candidates include Steve Biggs and Dave Allaway, with whom I did the Three Peaks, and which Steve has a successful web site (link address at the bottom), two new recruits to the team, Dan Ball and JMC otherwise known as John McDonald. Oh and not forgetting the most important member of the team (besides myself), our van driver Roger Biggs.
