102. Heifer International Gift Catalog: Gift Of Bees
The Buzz About bees Beehives require almost no space, and once established, are inexpensive to maintain. As bees search for nectar, they pollinate plants.
http://catalog.heifer.org/bees.cfm
The Buzz About Bees From India to the Dominican Republic, bees from Heifer International help struggling families earn income through the sale of honey, beeswax and pollen. Beehives require almost no space, and once established, are inexpensive to maintain. As bees search for nectar, they pollinate plants. Placed strategically, beehives can as much as double some fruit and vegetable yields. In this way, a beehive can be a boon to a whole village. Although most Heifer partners keep bees as a supplement to family income, beekeeping can be a family's livelihood. Your gift provides a family with a package of bees, the box and hive, and training in beekeeping. Bee Smart We have the same ability: our problem-solving skills challenge our thinking about the larger picture of world hunger and help us make connections between how we live and the poisoning of our planet. And by observing bees' teamwork, we can learn a lot about how we can work together to end hunger forever. Heifer is very careful to say that they're rooted in the Christian tradition, but they help people of all faiths and people of all faiths work with them.

Order Hymenoptera
This page contains pictures and information for Sawflies, Bees, Wasps and Ants that we found in the Brisbane area, Queensland, Australia.
A cluster of bees rested on grass stem during the late afternoon.
The insect order Hymenoptera includes sawflies, wasps, bees and ants. The name Hymenoptera means 'membrane wings'. Their adults have two pair of membranous wings with the forewings lager than the hind wings. The main defining characteristic of Hymenoptera is that the front and hind wings are held together by a series of little hooks called hamuli. The female insects have strings to inject venom to their enemy where the string is their modified ovipositor. Most insects in this order have a waist that separates the thorax and abdomen. On their head they have two large compound eyes and mandibulate mouthparts. Their antenna is medium in length and usually strongly elbowed. Most larvae in this order are maggot-like and with no legs. However, the Sawflies larvae look like caterpillars and sometimes mistaken as butterflies or moths larvae. The insects in this order developed in complete metamorphosis.

Bees are any of 20,000 species of insects belonging to the superfamily Apoidea and the order Hymenoptera, including such important pollinators of plants as the bumblebees; the yellow-faced, or plasterer, bees; the mining, or burrower, bees; and the economically important honeybees of the genus Apis, the only domesticated insects besides the silkworm. Honeybees are known for the honey and wax they produce and their ability to communicate with one another through dancelike postures (the so-called dance language).

The Social Bees = Apidae.
Introduction
Not all the Apidae are social those that are not, are called Solitary Bees and are not the concern of this page. Honey Bees have a long history of association with man. 9 000 years ago gathering wild honey was already such an important part of mankinds' activities that he was painting scenes about it on the walls of his caves, a few thousand years later people in China and Egypt were keeping bees in hives made out of wicker baskets, nowadays thousands of pages of literature are devoted to Honey Bees and their culture every year. Recently a subspecies of Apis mellifera A.mellifera scutellata has become infamous as Africanised Honey Bee . Honey Bees however are not the only social bees, both the Bumble Bees (Bombinae) and the mostly South American Stingless Bees (Meliponinae) are also social.

Bumble Bees
Bumble Bees are the least advanced of the major groups of Eusocial Bees and their foraging is limited by the fact that they have not evolved any means of communicating information reguarding utilisable resources. There are about 300 species of Bumble Bee world wide and they are either of the normal nest building brood raising type, all those in the genus

Remarks upon the Fable of the Bees.
by Frances Hutcheson
REMARKS
UPON
The FABLE of the BEES. To Hibernicus. Nunquam aliud natura aliud sapientia decit.
Juven. SIR, A Great part of your readers must have heard of a book entituled, Private Vices public Benefits. I do not intend any answer to that book; but rather hereafter to shew it to be unanswerable, notwithstanding the zealous attempts of some of the clergy. Yet it is to be hoped that that author's performance will not supersede the labours of others on the same subject, without design of answering what he has wrote. What his own private happiness is, any one may know by reflecting upon the several sorts of pleasant perceptions he is capable of. We imagine our fellows capable of the same, and can in like manner conceive public happiness. They are happy who have what they desire, and are free from what occasions pain. He is in a sure state of happiness, who has a sure prospect that in all parts of his existence he shall have all things which he desires, or at least those which he most earnestly desires, without any considerable pains. He is miserable who is under grievous pain, or who wants what he most violently desires. There is one old distinction of our desires, according as some of them are preceded naturally by a sense of pain, previously to any opinion of good to be found in the object; which is desired chiefly in order to remove the pain; whereas other desires arise only upon a previous opinion of good in the object, either to ourselves, or to those we love. These desires, though they do not presuppose any sense of pain previous to the opinion, yet may be attended with pain, when the object imagined to be good is uncertain. The former sort of desires are called appetites; the latter affections or passions. The pains of the appetites when they are not gratified are unavoidable. But the pains of many disappointed passions might have been prevented, by correcting the false opinions, or by breaking foolish associations of ideas, by which we imagine the most momentous good or evil to be in these objects or events, which really are of little or no consequence in themselves.

Sorry for the inconvenience, but my 'Diaries of a Long Distance Walker' website has now been moved to: www.gtleisure.co.uk/walks Please update any links you have to its new address. Reason for the Move I have struggled for months to get Freeserve to correct a long standing fault on their server, but their support and customer service is sadly lacking and I have been unable to get them to do anything about the problem. I have, therefore, had to move my website reluctantly to another host where it works properly. The Freeserve problem is that all web content from member's websites (but not from their own) is downloaded with a timestamp that says it has already expired. This means that, although everything that is downloaded goes into the local cache on a user's PC, it is never made use of again (except when working off-line) because it is already deemed to be out-of-date. This plays havoc with animated graphics and causes unnecessary extra downloading when pages are re-visited. It can also cause the browser to hang up because there are too many download requests.

Bees
More than 211,000 beekeepers maintain about 3.2 million honey bee colonies in the United States. Thousands of beekeepers are small-scale entrepreneurs. Aside from the pleasures of the hobby, they keep honey bees for the production of honey, pollen, beeswax, propolis, and royal jelly. Only in the last century have people begun to recognize the value of bees as pollinators. Pollinators include not only honey bees, but also more than 3,500 species of pollen bees in North America. The contribution of bees as pollinators of cultivated crops far outweighs the value of hive products. Although most beekeepers specialize in honey bees, some raise pollen bees for their pollination services. Beekeeping's profitability depends on many factors, and the decision to enter this occupation should be made carefully. Bee-keepers should know about bee biology, flora, and management, and should also possess business ability. They should understand that beekeeping is subject to factors beyond their control - such as market prices that fluctuate and weather elements that range from drought to floods and temperature extremes. Entrepreneurs intent on commercializing should decide whether to be migratory or nonmigratory and select locations that offer opportunities for pollination rentals; production of honey, beeswax, or pollen; and selling of packaged bees and queens.
