B EES is a nonprofit organization that works with educators to develop innovative environmental education programs which are multidisciplinary, inquiry-based, and customized around a local issue. Our programs engage middle to high school students in an in-depth and hands-on examination of an issue, incorporate many perspectives, and include the use of technology tools, exposure to career opportunities, and practice in using workplace readiness skills. Our mission is to improve environmental knowledge and decision making among students and teachers. We are a broad-based coalition of resources from the academic, corporate, environmental, media, government, and community sectors. BEES connects schools to local resources - experts, curriculum and resource materials, facilities, and funding sources to implement and sustain their programs.

Communication and Recruitment to Food Sources by Apis mellifera The round dance is performed for food sources close to the colony (less than 50-80 m) and the waggle dance used for distant floral sites. Round dances elicit flight and searching (by olfactory and visual cues) behavior for flowers close to the hive but without respect to any specified direction.
WAGGLE "DANCE"
Scout bee or recruit locates a rich flower patch, imbibes some nectar and flies home. She crawls onto the vertical combs near the nest entrance and dances for up to several minutes. The dance amidst closely packed adjacent bees consists of running through a small figure eight pattern repeatedly. Here a straight run followed by a turn to the right to circle back to the starting point, another straight run, followed by a turn and circle to the left, and so on in a regular alternation between right and left turns after straight runs constitutes the dance. The informative portion of the dance is the straight run where the dancer vigorously vibrates (waggles) her abdomen back and forth laterally and emits strong substrate and airborne vibrations in addition to audible (to humans) buzzes.

Africanized Honey bees information from the Texas A M University Agriculture Program.
http://agnews.tamu.edu/bees/home.htm
A New Public Nuisance The Africanized honey bee, popularly known as the "killer bee," is moving into South Texas and the southern United States. Scientists are not certain how far north the bee will spread, but they do know that it will cause problems wherever it resides in large numbers. This insect, which has been migrating from South America since the 1950's, looks just like a domestic honey bee, but it is not nearly as good natured. In fact, it has a bit of a quick temper. The domestic bee has lived in harmony with human beings for hundreds of years. It has been bred for gentleness and good honey production. By contrast, the Africanized bee is a "wild" bee that is not comfortable being around people or animals. Any colony of bees will defend its hive, but Africanized bees do so with gusto. These bees are more likely to sense a threat at greater distances, become more upset with less reason, and sting in much greater numbers. More People Will Get Stung More people probably will be stung by bees wherever Africanized honey bees become established. Some individuals may get stung hundreds of times in only a few moments. The Africanized bee's "killer" reputation is greatly exaggerated, but it does have some basis in fact. In isolated instances, people and animals have been stung to death. Most often, the person who died was not able to get away from the bees quickly. Animal losses have occurred for the same reasons. Pets and livestock were tied up or penned when they encountered the bees.

Members of the Order Hymenoptera are charcterized by two pairs of membranous wings, clubbed antennae and chewing mouthparts. A good number possess a contricted "waist" between their thorax and abdomen. Ants, bees and wasps have evolved societal cooperation and are some of the finest natural architects, making extensive use of hexagonal forms.

Anatomy of a Hive Amazing Bee Facts How this Film Was Made
Welcome to the companion Web site to the NOVA program "Tales from the Hive," originally broadcast on Tuesday, January 4, 2000. In this NOVA program, our cinematographer literally filmed inside a hive and followed bees in flight to capture closeups of honeybee behavior. Here's what you'll find online:
  • Anatomy of a Hive
A hive is more than just a buzz of activity. The social organization rivals that in the best-run corporations, with each bee and each cell possessing a rigidly specific function. Have a look at the physical, behavioral, and social infrastructure inside a bees' nest.
  • The Buzz About Bees
Did you know that on average it takes the nectar from 10 million flowers to make one liter of honey? That a worker bee can carry half her weight in nectar and pollen and still fly? Beguile yourself with these and other fascinating facts about bees.
  • Dances With Bees (Hot Science)
As viewers witnessed in "Tales From the Hive," individual honeybees will perform a specialized, wing-fluttering dance to inform other bees of the distance, direction, and richness of a new source of nectar. In this interactive feature, try your hand at successfully interpreting such a bee ballet.
  • The Making Of
How did they get closeups of bees in flight? Of a queen mating on the wing? Of the inside of a brood cell? In this engaging interview, enhanced by production stills, filmmaker Wolfgang Thaler reveals the tricks he used to secure the film's eye-popping cinematography.

Bees
Apiidae

Bees belong to the third largest insect order which also includes wasps and ants. Together, these creatures pollinate crops, turn over the soil more effectively than earthworms, and, in the case of the bee, furnish food in the form of honey. Even more importantly, some members of this order prey on other insects the single most important factor in keeping the earth's insect population in check.
The bee's eyes, like those of other insects, differ greatly from human eyes. They consist of a pair of compound eyes made up of numerous six-sided facets (28,000 in some dragonflies, 4,000 in house flies) plus three simple eyes. Despite this, their vision is believed to be sharp only for a distance of about 1 m. Bees, however, are capable of seeing ultraviolet light, which is invisible to humans. The bee is capable of navigating, even on a cloudy day, by cloud-penetrating ultraviolet light. Honey bees also use the sun as a reference point to communicate to other bees the angle of flight to be followed to arrive at newly discovered nectar-bearing flowers.
