Breeding Better Beef Cattle
PRINCIPLES FOR BEEF CATTLE BREEDING PROGRAMS
Expected progeny differences (EPDs) have been available for use in beef cattle selection programs since the early 1970's. Advancements in computer technology and breed registries collecting vast amounts of pedigree and performance information has made the production of EPDs possible for virtually every animal within a breed. With the cost of beef cattle production continually rising relative to cattle market prices, producers are using every available piece of information to increase their bottom line. Understanding and implementing the use of EPDs in beef cattle selection programs allows producers to have more control in developing the product they have to market. However, gaining an understanding of EPDs and how they can be successfully used is no trivial task.
Expected Progeny Differences (EPD)
Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs) may be used to estimate how future progeny of the subject animal will compare to progeny of other animals within the breed.
Select breedstock by EPDs
The best tool the beef industry has at its disposal for making genetic progress is the Expected Progeny Difference (EPD). It has been suggested that EPDs are five to nine times more accurate than performance indexes when selecting seedstock.

Commodity Outlook 2003: U.S. Cattle Livestock Market
T.E. Anton
Overview
The downward trend in cattle inventory continues. As of July 1, 2002, cattle-and-calves inventory was down 0.6 percent from the previous year, and the number of cows and heifers that had calved fell 0.2 percent. On the other hand, the number of heifers being held for beef-cow replacements was steady, while milk-cow replacements increased by three percent. The 2001 U.S. calf crop was down one percent from the previous year, and a further decline in the 2002 calf crop is also expected. Early 2002 beef production was at near record levels, reaching record levels in June, but the pace slowed by Fall. Beef production is expected to continue to slow down and be lower in 2003 than in 2002 due to fewer placements and decreased slaughter weights. The beef-cow liquidation that was anticipated in the drought-stricken states of the West has not occurred because total cow slaughter is still below 2001 levels. However, the Summer 2002 cow slaughter was 3.5 percent above Summer 2001. The projected corn crop is looking favorable for the cattle industry. Yields are up enough to compensate for decreased plantings. The USDA has increased the projected ending stocks of corn and decreased their projected price range.

Production:
Marketings:
As Manitoba's cattle slaughter industry has declined from a peak of 581,000 head in 1976 to 15,950 head in 2001, most of the beef cattle produced in Manitoba are sold out of the province. In 2001, about 202,200 slaughter cattle and 12,800 feeder cattle, valued at $255.6 million, were exported from Manitoba ports of exit to the United States, while almost 31,000 slaughter cattle and an estimated 321,000 feeder cattle and calves were sold mainly to Alberta and Ontario. Close to 13,900 slaughter cattle and 64,500 feeder cattle were brought into Manitoba from Saskatchewan in 2001, many of which were subsequently exported.
Beef Processing and Trade:
Two small federally-inspected plants slaughtered about 6,525 cattle in 2001, while 9,425 head were killed in 25 provincially-inspected plants in Manitoba. Beef production was estimated at 12.2 million lb. (carcass weight) valued at $21 million. Beef and beef products valued at $5.3 million were exported in 2001 with most of the exports going to the United States. Smaller quantities of beef were shipped to Japan, Taiwan, Mexico, Chile and China. Much of the beef consumed in Manitoba comes from Alberta or the United States. Almost 2,900 feeder cattle were imported into Manitoba from the U.S. in 2001, while beef valued at $12.7 million and raw hides valued at $9.4 million were imported from the U.S. and other countries in 2001.

INTRODUCTION Knowledgeable beef producers, whether they are involved in cow-calf or feedlot operations, are genuinely concerned about the care of their animals. They know that cattle that receive proper nutrition and health care and that are handled correctly will perform at or near optimum. These producers make every effort to provide the best possible environment for their animals. They recognize that beef cattle should receive appropriate care during all aspects of the production cycle. These producers also are willing to speak out for guidelines that result in improved animal welfare. If even a small percentage of beef producers provide less than optimum care for their animals, it is of concern to other beef producers, to extension educators, and to all others associated with the production of beef. It is in the best interest of everyone that beef cattle receive proper care throughout the production cycle.

Being successful in the production of livestock depends, to a large extent, on being able to select animals that are good feeders and good breeders. Time is the best teacher but sometimes the student does not have to time necessary to learn. Well-organized courses in livestock selection provide a partial substitute for experience. This book presents livestock judging, selection and evaluation in a practical, direct manner. It also provides an extensive list of descriptive terms for each type of livestock, so that you can enlarge your vocabulary and choose specific terms to apply to discussions. Contents

Alabama cattle producers sold over $400 million worth of cattle and calves last year. Cattle are produced in every county and cattle production represents a $2 billion industry in Alabama. The state’s climate and land is ideally suited for raising cattle.
CATTLE NUMBERS HAVE BOTTOMED OUT BUT ALABAMA STILL NEEDS MORE COWS A ccording to figures released by the Alabama Agricultural Statistics Service, on January 1 Alabama producers had 1,440,000 head of cattle and calves on Alabama farms, up 70,000 head from year earlier figures. Alabama’s cattle numbers are back up since they reached the lowest level since 1945 in 2001. This state could easily support another 500,000 beef cows.
