Greenhouse emissions from beef cattle
Livestock produce methane (CH ) and nitrous oxide (N O). Both are very potent greenhouse gasses, methane having a global warming potential 21 times that of carbon dioxide and nitrous oxide 310 times the global warming potential of carbon dioxide.
Greenhouse gas emissions from livestock
Enteric fermentation: Methane is produced as a by-product of the digestion of feed in the rumen of cattle under anaerobic conditions. The amount of methane emitted by cattle is dependent primarily on the characteristics of the feed and the amount eaten. Manure: Both methane and nitrous oxide can be produced from manure under certain management conditions. Emissions from the manure of range-kept cattle are considered negligible. N O emissions from the soil do occur with the deposition of manure, however these emissions are considered agricultural soil emissions and are not attributed to livestock in the inventory.
Contributions to national emissions
Beef cattle contribute about 58% of livestock emissions and about 8% of the national greenhouse gas emissions.

Trace Minerals for Beef Cattle Average Trace Mineral Composition Diagnosis of trace mineral deficiency Supplementation Chelates Last Update: March 1992 Trace minerals are essential to maintain animal health, production and reproduction, but are required in trace or minute amounts. When not present in sufficient quantity, these trace minerals can cause severe biological problems for the animal and economic losses for the producer. However, with trace minerals being required in such small amounts, excess supplementation can cause toxicity. Therefore, addition of trace minerals to a livestock ration should be done in concert with a professional recommendation. The minerals that are of particular concern in Saskatchewan are copper, zinc, manganese, iodine, cobalt and selenium. Average Trace Mineral Composition of Selected Saskatchewan Feedstuff

Minerals for Beef Cattle Average Mineral Composition of Selected Sask. Feedstuffs Methods of Supplementation Macro Minerals Mineral Supplements Last Update: March 1992 Animals have specific requirements for minerals. These requirements are based on the type, weight and age, as well as the rate of performance (weight gain, level of milk production, pregnancy, etc.) expected of the animal. Mineral imbalances and/or deficiencies can result in decreased performance, decreased disease resistance and reproductive failure which results in serious economic losses. Mineral deficiencies or imbalances occur when the animal's requirements are not met because of low mineral content in the feedstuffs, low biological availability of the mineral, or another mineral or other substances interferes with the absorption of the mineral by the animal. While animals may recognize the body's need for minerals, the concept of "Nutritional Wisdom" whereby the animal will eat the minerals that it requires and also consume the correct amounts of the required mineral has not been shown to exist. Mineral supplements are not uniformly palatable. Cattle have shown preference for bonemeal-salt mixtures over other (dicalcium phosphate or monocalcium phosphate) supplements. However, water quality, ration content and variability between animals are also factors influencing palatability.

COOPERATIVE EXTENSION SERVICE LIVESTOCK PROGRAMS
The Livestock component of the UVI Cooperative Extension Service is divided into four main project areas. Each area strives to provide the farmers of the Virgin Islands with the most accurate and up to date livestock information available.
Beef Cattle Improvement Program
The beef cattle program of the Cooperative Extension Service focuses on identification and performance testing. It works with all of the cattle farmers in the Virgin Islands from the large purebred Senepol breeder to the small backyard producer. The program operates along the guidelines of the Beef Improvement Federation and assists producers in the identification of animals, weighing of animals and provides selection assistance for replacement animals. The goals of the program are to provide beef cattle farmers with the technology and education necessary for a profitable enterprise. The primary breed of beef cattle in the Virgin Islands is the Senepol . This breed was developed on St. Croix to meet the needs of the tropical beef producer.
The cattle were classified in the 1970's in a cooperative effort between the then College of the Virgin Islands and the original four Senepol farms. The breed has now gone global and can be found on almost every continent. For more information on the Senepol cattle visit the UVI Senepol homepage.

About this Manual
The purpose of all Emission Estimation Technique (EET) Manuals in this series is to assist Australian manufacturing, industrial and service facilities to report emissions of listed substances to the National Pollutant Inventory (NPI). This Manual describes the procedures and recommended approaches for estimating emissions from facilities engaged in the operation of Beef Cattle Feedlots. A beef feedlot is a confined area with watering and feeding facilities where cattle are completely hand or mechanically fed for the purpose of production (ARMCANZ, 1997). Feedlot operations consist of a number of activities including feedstock storage, feeding systems, animal housing, disposal of biological matter, waste removal/storage and waste treatment. CATTLE  ON  FEED  INVENTORY  BELOW  A  YEAR  AGO As of May 1, USDA-NASS reported the estimated number of cattle on-feed in U.S. feedlots at 10.36 million head, 2 percent below a year ago and 6 percent below 2002’s.  In general, the report suggested that market ready fed cattle supplies should remain relatively tight at least well into the summer quarter. Details CATTLE  FEEDING  RETURNS May turned out to be a very good month for U.S. cattle feeders especially given expectations earlier this year that red ink would continue to flow.  Steers sold in May, that were placed as yearlings and fed in commercial feedlots in the Southern Plains, mostly had profits of over $70.00 per head.  In terms of profit, May closeouts were the best since December 2003.
