Beef Cattle Symposium
The University of California Cooperative Extension and U.C.Veterinary Medicine Extension are sponsoring a Beef Cattle Health Symposium on Saturday, March 6, 1999, 8:30 a.m., at Central Park in Paso Robles, California.
Reproduction efficiency of the cow herd is critical to a successful beef cattle operation. The success starts with getting the females pregnant and delivering a live, healthy calf. The symposium will give producers ideas and management options to increase reproductive efficiency of their herd.
Dr. John Maas, Extension Veterinarian from UC Davis, will be discussing reproductive physiology. He will talk about the various parts of the female reproductive system, its function and how management can influence its efficiency.
Dr. Mylon Filkins, DVM, Bakersfield, will discuss different management practices that can be carried out at the chute while cows are being processed, to improve conception rate or reduce calving difficulty. He will discuss the advantages and disadvantages of culling heifers on pelvic size. He will also be discussing if it pays to give heifers pelvic examinations prior to breeding.

Ontario’s beef farmers are committed to good stewardship of the animals and land in their care.  As well, the industry supports research that will improve the industry’s knowledge and understanding of beef cattle.  The three sectors of this industry: cow - calf, backgrounder and feedlot are generally in the hands of farm families as single operations and/or in combination.  The following is a brief description of each of these sectors: Cow-Calf Farms Beef cattle in Canada spend most of their lives on range or pasture.  The average size Ontario cow-calf farm is very small, comprised of approximately 25 cows.  Cows usually give birth in the spring.  Calves are born annually and weaned at 5-6 months of age or about 227 kilograms.  Cows are kept in calving areas during the calving period so that farmers can keep close watch over cows and calves during this critical period.  Cows and their calves spend the spring, summer and fall living and grazing on pasture.  During the winter various methods of protection are provided; ranging from natural shelter areas to conventional barns. Backgrounder Farms After weaning, a large percentage of calves are then backgrounded, which means allowing them to graze and/or feeding them a high forage diet, such as hay, until they reach a weight of approximately 408 kg when they are moved to a feedlot.

Cattle Feeding Returns Seen Negative Through Spring After soaring to historically high levels just five months ago, profits in the cattle feeding business have plummeted to negative territory and may well stay below breakeven levels through the spring. Keep Cattle Sales Options Open While most agricultural producers could be rated as fairly good to expert when it comes to conducting the affairs of agribusiness, there are a few common flaws in the way they generally do business. Electric Fence for Beef Cattle
There are several options for fencing beef cattle. Depending on a variety of factors, the number of fence wires can vary from one to six, depending on:
size of the cattle life expectancy of the fence whether you will brand or castrate within the enclosure if you are concerned about keeping out predators whether you use rotational grazing To safely contain most beef cattle, you need a fence controller that delivers a minimum of 2,000 - 3,000 volts on the fence line. Voltage levels are impacted by vegetation on the fence line, length of fence and type of wire. Note: A minimum of 5,000 volts on the fence line is required to keep out predators. We recommend you purchase a Zareba fence controller capable of maintaining these voltage levels.

Raising Cattle And Other Livestock
Cattle are among the most important of farm animals. They are used for meat, milk, leather, medicine and more. Beef by-products enable us to use 99% of every beef animal. In some countries, cattle are still a main source of power for plows, carts and wagons. Cattle belong to the ox family along with bison, yak, and water buffalo. Cattle digest their food by bringing it back to the mouth from the second chamber (reticulum) of the four chambered stomach. This food is called a cud. The first stomach chamber is called the paunch.
