Beef Cattle:
Livestock Parasite Control
Insect pests cost Mississippi cattle producers millions of dollars annually. These pests cause financial losses by decreasing milk production and weight gains, by damaging carcasses and hides, and by transmitting diseases. This guide is intended as an aid in selecting the correct insecticide for the pest or pests involved. In all cases, read the label of any insecticide product before purchase. The directions for use and the limitations noted on a label may work for one farm and not another. Generally speaking, insecticides cleared for use on beef cattle may also be used on nonlactating dairy cattle, unless the label forbids such use. READ THE LABEL! HORN FLIES-Sprays

Ticks on Beef Cattle
Livestock Insect Series
Life History Most Important Summer Ticks Tick Control Authors: Dr. Donald R. Johnson , Extension Entomologist
Dr. Gus Lorenz , Extension Entomologist - I P M Coordinator
Glenn Studebaker , Extension Entomologist
Dr. John D. Hopkins , Assistant Specialist - Entomology and Insecticide Testing Coordinator Ticks are not insects. They belong to the class Arachnida along with spiders, scorpions, daddy longlegs and mites. They are most closely related to mites. All adult members of their class have eight legs, which distinguishes them from insects, which have six. Heavy infestation of ticks on cattle results in a loss of condition, failure to gain properly and a severe degree of anemia. Tick bites are irritating and cause the infested animal to rub and scratch, resulting in a scabby skin condition, sometimes followed by secondary infection. Ticks frequently use wild animal hosts to maintain tremendous populations in the vicinity of treated cattle herds. Ticks produced on wildlife can reinfest treated cattle, and they continually pose a problem for Arkansas cattle producers. Ticks are also capable of transmitting diseases such as anaplasmosis to cattle. Back To Top Life History of Ticks There are four stages in the life cycle of ticks: the egg, the six-legged larva or seed tick, the nymph and the adult which has eight legs. The larva, nymph and adult obtain food by piercing the skin of animals and sucking blood. Eggs are laid on the ground, not on the host animal. Ticks are referred to as one-, two- or three-host ticks depending on how many animals they must parasitize to complete their life cycle. The most important cattle tick in Arkansas is the three-host tick. The larva, nymph and adult stages of three-host ticks are each spent on a different animal. These three hosts can all be different species of animals.

Cattle: (Bos)
Remains of domesticated cattle dating to 6,500 B.C. have been found in Turkey and other sites in the Near East approach this age also. Some authorities date the domestication of cattle as early as 10,000 years ago, and others almost half that amount of time. Regardless of the time frame it is generally accepted that the domestication of cattle followed sheep, goats, pigs and dogs. Modern domestic cattle evolved from a single early ancestor, the aurochs. In addition to prehistoric painting that help us identify the appearance of the auroch the species actually survived until relatively modern times. It is believed the last surviving member of the species was killed by a poacher in 1627 on a hunting reserve near Warsaw, Poland. The species may have survived in small number in other parts of the world until a later date but there is no evidence to support this theory. Early cattle served a triple-purpose. They provided meat, milk and labor to their owners. Eventually their draft purposes were largely replaced by horses and much later by machinery so they were selected more for single or in some cases dual purposes. Hopkins , Assistant Specialist - Entomology and Insecticide Testing Coordinator Economic Importance The horn fly, Haematobia irritans , is widely distributed throughout the United States. The adult flies gather by the thousands around the horns, backs, shoulders and bellies of cattle, causing irritation and annoyance to the cattle. The presence of the flies causes loss of blood and reduced weight gains in beef cattle. The fly appears early in the spring and builds up to peak populations during mid- to late-summer and early fall in Arkansas. It generally is a pest of cattle, but sheep, goats, dogs and sometimes horses are attacked. When large number of flies are on cattle, the cattle bunch and spend most of the time fighting flies. They will stand in water or seek shade trying to get relief. Back To Top Life Cycle The horn fly is about one-half the size of an ordinary housefly and possesses a piercing beak. The fly remains on the animal day and night and leaves only to pass to another host or lay eggs. Horn flies feed 20 times a day or more and are marked blood suckers.

HUNTIN' DAYLIGHT FREE MARKETS PREVAIL...SO FAR Cattle producers still have the right to market their cattle any way they choose and to whomever they choose. FORAGE QUALITY AN IMPORTANT FACTOR IN BEEF PRODUCTION As producers concerned with efficient performance of our cow herds, growing cattle and so on, we realize that management practices that promote the production of quality forages for consumption by these animals is very important. It is probably one of the most important things a producer does and subsequently requires attention year round. THE WORLD ACCORDING TO HOOTER MCCORMICK TAX FLATTENER Hooter McCormick was the only client that Wylie Zimmerman had ever fired. He'd done Hooter's tax work for years, or attempted to, but there came a day three years back when his constitution balked at the thought of one more go-round with Hooter's logic-defying approach to the tax system, not to mention the constant calls from the IRS and subsequent audits on Hooter's behalf.

    Why Test Feeds?
Nutrient concentration can vary considerably in feeds, especially forages. Protein in alfalfa hay can range from 10 to 25 percent or more of the dry matter; grass hay will contain between four and 18 percent protein. Use feed tests to target specific feeds to different livestock. Feed high quality forage to the most productive livestock or when nutrient needs are highest. Feed lower quality forage to animals with lower nutrient needs. Feed tests can help establish the dollar value of a forage, in the cash market or in personal use inventories. Use these tests to establish the value of your forage and to help determine what forages to feed, buy, or sell. Forage tests are useful to evaluate production practices like fertilization, time of harvest, method of harvest, etc., that may influence forage quality. Management skills can improve by learning how changes in production practices affect the quality of your forages.
