We need to get past the widespread misconceptions that bears are dangerous, unpredictable animals. These ideas only serve to harbor fear and misunderstanding. We need to promote respect for wildlife, not fear. During the last century, our attitude towards bears has differed many times. Throughout history the bear has been revered by many cultures, who believed the bear possessed wisdom and power. Among native peoples, few other animals were honoured with as much ritual attention as the bear. Then when bears began looking to people as a provider of food (just as we had taught them to do), government officials decided that this too was not an appropriate situation. So we began striking fear into the hearts of people, threatening them with loss of their life, if they befriended these dangerous and unpredictable animals. So as you can see, we have fluctuated from one extreme to other several times. The truth is finally surfacing in literature and video. The newly released IBA video

SUNY-ESF was ranked among the nation's top universities by U.S. News and World Report . Story HERE Adirondack Black Bears From the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry
Black bears inhabit the extensive forest lands of northern New York, particularly those within the Adirondack Park. The Adirondack region is "home" to a healthy population of nearly 4,000 black bears. Until the arrival of a few moose in recent years, black bears were the largest New York mammal, with some adult males weighing in excess of 600 pounds. Bears have been described as "big, black eating machines" because foraging for food is a near constant activity except in winter. Adequate food resources are important for growth, reproduction, and building fat reserves for winter survival in their den. Food Habits Adirondack black bears eat a wide variety of foods. Approximately 90 percent of their diet is plant material consisting of not less than 30 different plant species. The remainder is primarily insects, but bears also will scavenge carcasses of larger animals, and, if the opportunity arises, prey upon live white-tailed deer fawns, small woodland mammals, and beaver.

How Do You Fix a Wild Bear?
First, do no harm. Then, use pig membranes.
By Brendan I. Koerner

For the first time in 33 years, New Jersey is allowing hunters to thin out its burgeoning black bear population. Animal-rights activists have assailed the six-day hunt, arguing that the state should sterilize the bears instead. How, exactly, does one sterilize a black bear in the wild? There are two proposed methods, neither of which has been tested on wild black bears. The New Jersey Animal Rights Alliance believes the short-term solution is Neutersol , which the Food and Drug Administration has approved for the nonsurgical sterilization of puppies. The drug must be injected into the testes, so the bears would have to be sedated and anesthetized for the procedure. Winter would be an ideal time to administer the Neutersol since a hibernating black bear is much easier to medicate than a frisky one. The NJARA estimates that each chemical sterilization would cost between $80 and $100, a tab the group would pick up with the assistance of the antihunting Bear Education and Resource Group . The ultimate goal would be to fix the majority of New Jersey's 3,000-plus black bears.

No doubt if you live in certain parts of the globe you may be fortunate enough, (or unfortunate depending on your point of view), to find real bears in the backyard. Such bears command respect, but the intrepid microscopist can with less caution safely go looking for 'bears' in their backyard! The 'bears' in question are 'water bears', a colloquial name for tiny multicellular critters (typically 0.1-0.5mm long) that have always delighted microscopists. They are properly called tardigrades, and with four pairs of stumpy legs with a slow lumbering gait they do look like a microscopic bear. They are usually quite easy to find (but see below), as they can occur in a variety of places which are intermittently or permanently damp. The most likely place in a backyard is in the compact clumps of moss (shown left) found in damper parts of the garden such as the base of trees and walls, in plant pots, and in shed roofs and gutters. (Please don't start scaling heights and risking life and limb looking for them please!).
