82. Among The Bears: Raising Orphan Cubs In The Wild
In the spring of 1993, Ben Kilham, a naturalist who lives in the woodlandsof New Hampshire, began raising a pair of orphaned wild black bears.

Among the Bears: Raising Orphan Cubs in the Wild
"With growing black bear populations and an ever-increasing sprawl of human development, conflicts are inevitable and increasing. The question is: will we learn to live with this magnificent animal?" (p. 226) So one day last summer I'm riding my bike up in the Siskiyou Mountains and as I come around a corner there is a black bear in the middle of the road. I don't know who was more surprised, but I do know who was more scared since s/he left the road immediately. My wife has warned me on excursions since then to beware of the bears, but since that event, half the reason I now continue to go up there is in hopes of seeing another one. Well, this book did nothing to discourage me from such encounters, and I'm hoping my wife reads it too. She will certainly enjoy reading it, and Among the Bears will teach her more than a thing or two about these creatures. Among the Bears is quite similar to Next of Kin in many ways. It is well written, entertaining, informative, exciting, sad, and most of all: it provides an entirely new and "insider's" perspective to a species that you may think you know something about, but really don't, before undertaking its contents. Benjamin Kilham is the Jane Goodall of the bear kingdom.

Welcome to the brand new Barbara-Ann Bears website.
We are Barbara-Ann and Andy Cunningham and we make wild and wonderful artist teddy bears, dragons and rabbits in very small limited editions and one of a kinds. They range in colour from traditional browns and greys to hand-dyed, colourful, wacky creations. This is where you can see our complete 2004 collection , we usually show the bears we have for immediate adoption in our virtual bear fair, as took the bears to the Teddy Total fair in Germany and haven't enough bears at the moment to recreate the virtual bears fair, but we're working on it!
Apart from all the bears on show here, I am happy to undertake special commissions, if you have an idea put it down in writing in as much detail as possible and I'll do my best to turn it into a fluffy little creature for you. Also, if you have seen one of our bears in the past and for some reason missed it we may still be able to make that bear, or something very similar, for you, just ask, however as we have been making bears since 1990 we can't always remember every one, we might need quite a few clues or better still a picture.
Apart from making artists teddy bears we can also help with teddy bear design workshops and now also offer a web design service, please

In October 1995, the People's Republic of China joined the governments of 19 other Asian countries and territories in reaching consensus on the "Beijing Statement on the Control of Wildlife Trade in Asian Region." The Statement recognized that "illegal trade in wild fauna and flora still occurs in the Asian region, and that the illegal trade in wildlife is the principal factor which stimulates poaching." More importantly, participants agreed to search "for all possible ways and options to stem the illegal trade in wild fauna and flora." It remains to be seen, however, whether China and the other nations of this pivotal region of the world will fulfill their responsibilities and take all measures necessary to conserve threatened and endangered species. Rhinos, tigers, bears, and other precious wildlife cannot withstand the current rate of unsustainable slaughter and still survive into the next millennium.
Bear Parts Half of the earth's eight extant species of bear occur in China: the Asiatic black bear, Sun bear, Brown bear, and the famous Giant panda. All are protected under the global wildlife treaty, the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES). Because each is listed in Appendix I of the Convention, international commercialization of these bears' parts and products is prohibited. Unfortunately, the treaty is incapable of eliminating demand for bear parts within China itself. In addition, the high price many consumers are willing to pay for remedies containing endangered wildlife makes poaching and smuggling a risk worth taking.

95. CWC Fall 1994: Living With Bears
We cannot expect bears to change, and we don t want them to. Black bears, wild and wary, are a wonderful part of Colorado s natural heritage.

Colorado's Wildlife Company Fall 1994
Living With Bears
Since the days when Daniel Boone "kilt a bar" and carved his triumph on a tree, humans moving into bear habitat has meant conflicts between the two species. Bears used to be feared as ferocious wild animals, and despised as killers of live stock. Not until Yogi and Boo Boo came along did we begin to soften our image of wild bears. That change coincided with an increasingly urban population, one which has a minuscule chance of ever encountering a bear in the wild. Yet ironically, bear-human conflicts are increasing in Colorado as the expanding human population also moves into desirable mountain areas, and into bear habitat. Farmers and ranchers traditionally regarded bears as pests to be destroyed by any means. Wildlife management reflected that attitude for years until 1935, when Colorado declared the black bear a game animal and afforded it protection under state hunting regulations. Over succeeding decades Colorado's human population changed. From 1950 to 1990 Colorado's urban population more than tripled. By 1990 only 17.6% of the state population of 3,294,394 lived in the country. As city-dwellers outnumbered rural populations, Coloradoans adopted an increasingly humanistic attitude towards bears. Today fewer people are raised with a hunting tradition; there is rising interest in wildlife conservation and animal welfare among the general public, and some segments of the population oppose hunting outright. Reflecting these changing attitudes, in 1992 Coloradoans approved Amendment 10, banning the spring bear hunt and outlawing the use of dogs and

Brach's scores high points for visual appearance. Each bear has a distinctive smile, small arms, and teensy foot pads. The colors are vividespecially vibrant are the green and orange. (The strides made on this front are particularly important when compared with all other bear-shaped gummis. Other green and orange gummi bears regularly have a "watered down Kool Aid" appearance.) The taste of the Brach's seems to fall into the traditional "American lollipop" flavor, with a slight variation in taste from color to colorbut after five they all taste the same. The texture is a bit too soft, a bit too "fresh." These bears are flaccid. Brach's needs to remember that the rubbery consistency of gummis is not a negative trait. Remember those Brach's candies with the pink, brown and white layers? We feel the same way about Wild n' Fruity Gummi Bears: No need to stop the shopping cart, mom.
