Spectacled Bear
Tremarctos ornatus
photo by Phillip Coffey Physical Appearance: The South American spectacled bear has excellent eyesight and gets its name from the markings around their eyes. These markings are unique to each individual and can be used for identification. Geographic Range: Spectacled bears are found in the Andes Mountains of Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Bolivia, and Peru. Status: Vulnerable Threats to Survival: There are an estimated 2000 to 2400 remaining in the wild. The bears are endangered because of habitat loss. They are also hunted for their fur and meat. Even though it is illegal to hunt the bears, it is very difficult to enforce. Habitat: Historically found from dry coastal deserts, to rainforests, to treeless alpine areas above 4000 meters. Habits: Primarily vegetarian, the spectacled bear feeds on fruit and leaves. Captive Breeding: Gerald Durrell first brought a male spectacled bear, Pedro, to the Jersey Zoo in 1963. A female on loan from the Brookfield Zoo, Chicago, USA was successfully mated with Pedro and the first two litters were born in 1972 and 1974. 5 spectacled bears are currently in the Jersey collection. Sun bear
SUBFAMILY URSINAE
Ursus malayanus Raffles, 1821
From Ian Stirling, ed. Bears, Majestic Creatures of the Wild
Emmaus, Pennsylvania: Rodale Press, 1993. 240 pages.
APPEARANCE The sun bear has a short, sleek, black coat. The muzzle is short, and gray to faint orange in color. The crescent-shaped chest patch is yellowish or white. The muzzle is shorter and lighter colored than that of a black bear and in most cases the white area extends above the eyes. The ears are small and round. The paws are large and the soles are naked, which is thought to be an adaptation for climbing trees. The claws are large, curved, and pointed.
SIZE This is the smallest of the bears. Adults are about 120 to 150 centimeters (48 to 60 inches) long and weigh 27 to 65 kilograms (60 to 145 pounds). Males are 10 to 20 percent larger than females.
HABITAT Sun bears live in lowland tropical rainforests. They are excellent climbers and are thought to sleep in trees.
DISTRIBUTION The range of this species is not well documented but it is known throughout Southeast Asia from northern Burma and Bangladesh, south and east across Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, and Thailand, and south to peninsular Malaysia and the islands of Sumatra and Borneo. Because of large-scale habitat destruction and poaching, it is likely that its range has recently been reduced in northern and western regions.
REPRODUCTION There is little information about reproductive behavior in the wild but cubs are apparently born throughout the year. The gestation period for six births at the East Berlin Zoo was reported to be 95 to 96 days, suggesting t here was no delayed implantation. Conversely, three pregnancies at the zoo in Fort Worth, Texas, lasted 174 to 240 days, suggesting delayed implantation. Litters consisted of either one or two cubs, weighing about 325 grams (10 ounces) each. Cubs are reported to remain with their mothers until they are fully grown.

http://www.nps.gov/yose/wilderness/bears.htm
Natural History Bears Food Storage Wildlife Safety Natural History The varied topography of Yosemite's wilderness hosts about 1,460 species of plants in over 40 recognized plant communities. These, in turn, are home to numerous invertebrate and vertebrate species, including 78 species of mammals, 247 of birds, 17 of amphibians, 22 of reptiles, 11 of fish, and numerous invertebrates. Wilderness users must understand they are visitors to the homes of these residents and behave in ways that do not upset or destroy their balance of life. Consequences of improper human behavior to the inhabitants or their habitat can be extremely destructive if not deadly. Campfires above 9600', for instance, eliminates necessary habitat and nesting sites. Feeding wildlife, either intentionally or not, encourages unnatural and potentially dangerous behavior and disrupts normal ecological processes. The information in this section highlights bears and proper food storage both in the wilderness and at the trailhead. Wilderness users must take similar care in everything they do in the backcountry to minimize their impact on the natural systems there. Users should also be aware of potential threats to themselves and learn more about mountain lions, poison oak, lyme disease, rattlesnakes or other hazards. http://www.nps.gov/yose/wilderness/bears.htm

http://www.leaflady.org/wild_bear.htm
Wild Bear's Garlic TM Wild Bear's Garlic is one of the oldest medicinal herbs known to man. Its healing properties have been recognized by Europeans for centuries where it is valued for its ability to cleanse the blood of impurities. The name Wild Bear's Garlic comes from the observation that bears awakening from their winter hibernation devoured vast quantities of the plant to restore their strength. Wild Bear's Garlic has long been used as a remedy for a wide range of diseases. Though very similar to ordinary cultivated garlic in function, Wild Bear's Garlic has higher levels of ajoenes, adenosine, iron, and ACE-Inhibitory potential. In fact, it has the highest natural sulfur and adenosine levels found anywhere in the plant kingdom! Adenosine is a key component in the regulation of hypertension an tachycardia. While ordinary garlic (Allium ursinum) has been cultivated for centuries resulting in a uniform, less vigorous strain, Wild Bear's Garlic (Allium sativum) is organically grown in the wild! This wild cousin to ordinary garlic grows on the Alpine Plains, its natural sulfur compounds unaltered by man. Rich in special sulfur compounds, Wild Bear's Garlic has circulation increasing and lipid-reducing properties that could be useful aids in preventing heart attacks. For two plants to have the same or similar properties it is necessary that their patterns of components be similar. In comparative chemical analysis and in enzyme and cell tests, Wild Bear's Garlic was found to have an effect corresponding to that of cultivated garlic. However, Wild Bear's Garlic contains more ajoenes, 30% more sulfur, and about 20 times more adenosine than cultivated garlic. It is to ajoene and adenosine that the well known effects on cholesterol, hypertension and tachycardia are largely attributed.

PROTECTING BEARS IN THE WILD
There are eight species of bear: sun bear, American black bear, brown bear, polar bear, spectacled bear, giant panda, sloth bear, and Asiatic black bear. Six species are likely in decline while two are probably stable, the polar bear and American black bear. Information on the status of species and their habitats is fragmentary, at best, over much of the world.
Bear conservation efforts vary from the intensive and highly organized management of the grizzly and black bear in the United States to little management of most Asian species.
BEARS AS MEDICINE
Medical applications for bear gall bladder include treatment of life-threatening cancers, burns, pain and redness of the eyes, asthma, sinusitis and pain in general. Bear gall bladder is also used to treat serious liver ailments and as a tonic to prevent liver damage from over-consumption of alcohol.
SOLUTIONS
The elimination of bears from 50-75% of their historic global range has already occurred and the remaining range will decrease unless serious efforts are focused on bear conservation. Bear conservation is at a relatively primitive stage in Asia. Acquiring basic ecological and geographic information must first happen in order to successfully devise a conservation strategy.

Whole Earth Spring 2000 [ Buy This Issue
To reflect these new observations on sexual and gender variability, new words and terms are emerging. "Transgender" refers to the combining, crossing over, or blurring of gender or sexual characteristics as defined by anatomy, physiology, or culture. Transgender phenomena include: intersexuality (in the past called "hermaphroditism," in which physiological and/or anatomical sex characteristics of both males and females are present); transsexuality (natural or willed sex change during the lifespan of an individual); transvestism (mimicry of the opposite sex in appearance or behavior); and gender mixing (the linguistic combination of gender signifiers that are "opposite" to each other). The veritable profusion of different kinds of intersexuality has stimulated a baroque scientific terminology. Fanciful-sounding names like chimera, freemartin, mosaic, and gynandromorph are actually the technical terms used by biologists to designate animals with various types of chromosomally and anatomically mixed male and female features. One particularly astonishing type, the gynandromorph, is a creature that appears to be literally divided in half, one side (usually the right) male in appearance, the other side female, often with a sharp line of demarcation between the sides. This occurs in, among other animals, butterflies, spiders, birds, and small mammals.

79. Grizzlies In The Wild
approximately 1200 grizzlies live in the wild. The Greater Yellowstone Ecosystemand Glacier National Park are the homes to the majority of those bears.
http://www.grizzlydiscoveryctr.com/wildbearinfochanges.html
The grizzly bear ( Ursus arctos horribilus ) is a subspecies of brown bear ( Ursus arctos ). The healthiest, stable populations of grizzlies live in Canada and Alaska. In the lower forty-eight states, approximately 1200 grizzlies live in the wild. The Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem and Glacier National Park are the homes to the majority of those bears. Smaller populations live in isolated areas of Wyoming, Idaho, Montana and Washington. Grizzlies in the lower 48 states are currently protected under the Endangered Species Act as a threatened species. The issue to delist the grizzly is a very controversial subject. The most critical aspect to protect this species is to preserve enough undisturbed wilderness for them to survive.
Adult male grizzlies typically need 250 square miles of habitat, called a home range, to live peacefully without interfering with humans, although the size is entirely food dependent. Where food is abundant, bears may have very small ranges. Females will have significantly smaller home ranges than males. Both male and female home ranges overlap. They live in temperate climates primarily, and are considered more of an open-country bear as opposed to a forest-dwelling creature.
Grizzlies are highly adaptable animals and are considered to be opportunistic eaters and omnivorous by nature. They will eat almost anything available including grasses, roots, berries, flowers, nuts, insects, rodents, fish, elk, deer, moose, antelope, carrion, and occasionally human foods that may attract them. They use their 42 teeth to eat this wide variety of foods. The food source is what determines the overall health of the bear, survival of young, hibernation, density of bears, lifespan, and size. Grizzlies living in coastal areas tend to eat more fish in their diet, while an inland grizzly consumes more vegetation. As with many different terrestrial mammals, grizzlies eat whatever is most abundant as the seasons change.
