Easier - A bear is a large, heavy and powerful animal with thick, shaggy fur and very short tail. Bears are omnivorous. They may eat plants, honey, insects, fish, and small animals. There are several kinds of bears, such as a brown bear, black bear, polar bear, and a grizzly bear. Harder Bears live alone; they never gather in groups except during the summer mating season when a pair may be together for a month. The solitary female gives birth to one to four cubs during the winter sleep period. Cubs grow rapidly but remain with their mother for one or two years. Bears often spend much of their winter sleeping, a state that some call hibernation. Other scientists maintain that bears do not truly hibernate because their body temperature does not drop greatly and some become active on mild days. Zoologists usually recognize eight species of bears with several subspecies or varieties. The main types are brown bears, American black bears, Asiatic black bears, panda bears, polar bears, sun bears, sloth bears, and spectacled bears. Until recently, some zoologists maintained that pandas were part of the raccoon family or belonged to their own mammal family. However, genetic testing now indicates that pandas are indeed bears.

SUN BEAR Helarctos malayanus Description: The sun bear is the smallest of the bears, with a body length of 48 to 60 inches. Local peoples refer to it as the "dog bear" They can weigh between 60 and 145 pounds with the males being slightly larger. Sun bears have short, sleek black fur with a golden or white colored crescent shape on their chest and the same lighter color around their muzzle and eyes. The muzzle is short and the ears are small and very round. The paws of the sun bear are large with naked soles, possibly an adaptation for better tree climbing. The claws are long, curved and very pointed. Range: They are found in southeast Asia; India, Burma, southern China, Laos, Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia, and Indonesia.
Habitat: Sun bears prefer lowland tropical rain forests. They are quite arboreal and are believed to sleep in trees. Diet: Sun bears are omnivorous, eating birds, small mammals, termites, the young tips of palm trees and the nests of wild bees. They have been known to cause crop damage particularly to oil palms. Social Organization: Nothing is known about the sun bear's social organization in the wild. Cubs are reported to stay with their mothers until fully grown.

Gone Fishin'
The bears we know today actually have as their ancestors bears that have been evolving for some 40 million years. Fossils of the earliest "true bear", Ursavus elemensis, have been found from the Mioncene Epoch in what was then sub-tropical Europe, and show a small dog-size animal with characteristics that show a blending of dog and bear traits. It is believed that all modern bears stem from Ursavus elemensis. Two important primitive bears that should be mentioned are Arctodus simus, the giant short faced bear, and Ursus speleaus, the European cave bear. The giant short faced bear is the largest land carnivore that ever lived. It had extremely long legs, sharp claws and a reach of over 14 feet tall. It is believed that this ancient giant is related to today's small-sized spectacled bear. The cave bear, while feared and worshipped by Neanderthal culture, was actually a herbivore by nature. Cave bears survived two ice ages but were eventually became extinct, leaving a wealth of fossils that helped excite the early paleontologists of the 19th century. From the ancient cave bears evolved the brown bear, Ursus arctos, the American black bear, Ursus americanus and the Asiatic black bear, Selenarctos thibetanus. And from the brown bear evolved the newest species of bear (only 20,000 years old) the polar bear, Ursus maritimus.

Name: Malayan Sun bears Scientific name: Helarctos malayanus Habitat: Makes it home in low land tropical and rain forest area of Southeastern Asia. Status: Due to habitat destruction serious threat is Asian pet trade. Also different parts are believe to potent medicines, especially gallbladders. Diet consists mostly of termites, birds, small mammals, and even bits of oil palms, and other commercial crops. Diet in the zoo: omnivorous diet. Location in the zoo: Asian Falls General information Special anatomical, physiological or behavioral adaptations Their jaws are disproportionately large to break open hard fruit such as coconuts. Their tongue is extraordinarily long to get insects out of logs. The ears of the Malayan sun bear are smaller and rounder than that of other bears. In fact, their teethes are flatter than other bears and, the canines are long enough to protrude between lips. Comments about the Sun bear of the Fort Worth Zoo Personal Observations The skin of the bear is covered with a black coat made of sleek, short hair. It has a white or yellowish patch on its chest shaped like half moon and a muzzle that is yellowed and shorter than that of the black bear. In fact the claws of the Malayan sun bear is approximately six inches and are curved with hairless soles that serves as an adaptive measure to help the bear in climbing trees. At the Zoo, the bear was very friendly and playful. Don't be deceived by this reaction of the sun bear and think that they are not dangerous. From upon visiting the Zoo, I was told that these animals, in the wild are very dangerous and indeed fearful.

They may be the smallest bears in the world, but they're also considered the meanest, pound for pound. Bornean sun bears are also one of the most enjoyable animals to observe, especially in the natural setting of Sun Bear Forest at the San Diego Zoo Here, amid the cascading waterfalls and lush forest vegetation, the sun bears, named for the golden crescents on their chests, display their frolicsome nature. Extremely agile and often comical, the sun bears are great tree climbers and make great use of the enclosure's Asian rain forest habitat. Next door, agile lion-tailed macaques scamper along the logs and rope bridges of their large enclosure. These handsome primates are always a pleasure to view.

Bears of the World Fossil records and historical data indicate that at one time there may have been hundreds of bear species worldwide, on all continents except Antarctica and Australia. Today, eight bear species remain in North and South America, Europe, and Asia. All of the bears found at the Vince Shute Wildlife Sanctuary are American black bears ( Ursus americanus). Below you will find a photo and a brief description of each of the other seven species. For additional information, see the Additional Reading page. The status of each species is listed, according to the International Union for Conservation's (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species for the year 2000. For complete listings and criteria, please visit www.redlist.org ASIATIC BLACK BEAR ( Selenarctos thibetanus)
    Description
: This species is similar in size and appearance to the American black bear, although the fur is longer, soft, and shaggy. Adult males weigh from 200 to 255 pounds (92-116 kg.) and adult females weigh between 110 and 225 pounds(50-102 kg.). The Asiatic black bear is an excellent tree climber, as are most of the bear species. Its predominantly herbivorous diet resembles that of its American cousin: plants, fruits, insects, bees' nests, and invertebrates are preferred foods. The most obvious difference between the two species is the chest blaze. This feature is found in about 25% of American black bears, and can vary in size and shape. In contrast, nearly all Asiatic black bears have cream-colored chest blazes in a crescent shape, giving the species its other common name: "moon bear."
