Sun Bears Measuring about 4 feet long and weighing less than 150 pounds, sun bears are the smallest of all bears. They are also called honey bears, dog bears, or Malayan sun bears. Though sun bears may not be as big as, say, polar bears or Kodiak bears, both of which can grow to more than 8 feet long and weigh over 1,000 pounds, they are just as dangerous! So, don't let sun bears' petite size fool you.
Identifying sun bears is easy. They wear shorthaired black coats and decorate their chests with a patch of yellowish crescent that looks like the letter "U." According to folklore, this chest mark represents the rising sun and is how sun bears got their name. Sun bears have short muzzles in orange or gray. Their tongues are unusually long, extendable to nearly 10 inches in length. When sun bears are hungry, they can simply stick their tongues into a tree hole or crevice to extract food hidden inside. Sun bears are omnivorous, feeding on both plants (such as honey and fruits) and animals (rodents and termites.)

Sun Bears: The Worlds Smallest Bear Poaching Problem of Sun Bear Vital Statistics of Sun Bear ... Distribution of Spectacled Bear
"Tropical" Bears Sun, Sloth, and Spectacled Bears are usually thought of as creatures of the Northern Hemisphere but three species range quite close to the equator. In fact, two species, the spectacled bear and the sun bear, actually occur south of the equator. Very little is known about the lives and habits of tropical bears, perhaps wildlife research is not a high priority for the relatively poor countries in which these bears occur. No one doubts the importance of conservation and wildlife study, but the government of many Third World Nations often simply have no mercy for along range resource planning let alone for wildlife research. For this reason, the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and its associate, the World Wildlife Fund, have been a major financiers for conservation in the Third World, underwriting recovery programs for such critically endangered species as orangutans, pandas, tigers, elephants, and rhinos.
Sun Bears: The Word Smallest Bears In the rush to save other animal superstars, the little 100 pound (45 kg) bear ha been sadly overlooked. It seldom rates even a footnote in most wildlife studies, and all the information published on it would hardly fill two written pages. Yet what little data there is disturbing: In 1978 the IUCN included the Sun bear (Helarctos malayanus) on its red list of endangered species.

The Sun bear is the smallest of all the bears. When we first saw the Sun bears, because of their small size, we thought they were bear cubs. Later we found out that these bears were full sized adult bears.
As you can see by the photo on the right, their claws are very long, thick and sharp. Their claws are used for digging and tearing into the nests of bees and termites. The Sun bear also eats fruit and small animals.
The Sun bear can be found in the lowland tropical rainforests of Southeast Asia. They enjoy climbing trees and often times will sleep on the branches of the trees.

    Ursus malayanus Raffles, 1821
From Ian Stirling, ed. Bears, Majestic Creatures of the Wild
Emmaus, Pennsylvania: Rodale Press, 1993. 240 pages.
APPEARANCE The sun bear has a short, sleek, black coat. The muzzle is short, and gray to faint orange in color. The crescent-shaped chest patch is yellowish or white. The muzzle is shorter and lighter colored than that of a black bear and in most cases the white area extends above the eyes. The ears are small and round. The paws are large and the soles are naked, which is thought to be an adaptation for climbing trees. The claws are large, curved, and pointed.
SIZE This is the smallest of the bears. Adults are about 120 to 150 centimeters (48 to 60 inches) long and weigh 27 to 65 kilograms (60 to 145 pounds). Males are 10 to 20 percent larger than females.
HABITAT Sun bears live in lowland tropical rainforests. They are excellent climbers and are thought to sleep in trees.
DISTRIBUTION The range of this species is not well documented but it is known throughout Southeast Asia from northern Burma and Bangladesh, south and east across Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, and Thailand, and south to peninsular Malaysia and the islands of Sumatra and Borneo. Because of large-scale habitat destruction and poaching, it is likely that its range has recently been reduced in northern and western regions.
REPRODUCTION There is little information about reproductive behavior in the wild but cubs are apparently born throughout the year. The gestation period for six births at the East Berlin Zoo was reported to be 95 to 96 days, suggesting t here was no delayed implantation. Conversely, three pregnancies at the zoo in Fort Worth, Texas, lasted 174 to 240 days, suggesting delayed implantation. Litters consisted of either one or two cubs, weighing about 325 grams (10 ounces) each. Cubs are reported to remain with their mothers until they are fully grown.

    MALAYAN
SUN BEAR Southeast Asia Unknown The smallest bear in the world, an adult male Malayan sun bear is about 4 feet (1.2 m) tall when standing on its hind legs and can weigh up to 140 pounds (64 kg). Despite their small size, sun bears can be very dangerous.
    Species Description and Natural History
Named for the golden crescent, or "U" shaped golden patch on their chest, sun bears are otherwise all black with smooth, short fur. They are increasingly rare residents of tropical rain forest in southern China, Burma, Malaysia, Sumatra, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, and Borneo. Malayan sun bears are skillful climbers, aided by long sickle-shaped claws on all four feet. These extremely long claws up to six inches allow the bears to dig for honey and grubs, which they lick up using their long tongues. The bears are omnivores. Their diet also includes fruits, insects, small mammals, and birds. Sun bears sometimes will damage coconut palm, banana, and cocoa plantations through foraging. They usually are nocturnal creatures. Smell is the sun bear's most important sense and their eyesight is not very good.

Welcome to Free The Bears Fund Inc The Free The Bears Fund Inc mission is “To protect, preserve and enrich the lives of bears throughout the world”.
We do this by raising money through donations, charity auctions, merchandising, and bear sponsorship. It is worth noting that the ABSOLUTE majority of all funds raised goes directly to fund our projects. OUR VISION:
TO UNLOCK THE CAGE OF DARKNESS
There is a bear in a small cage. Feel his confusion, sadness and despair.

There are people who live in a country with no welfare system, the only food, shelter and income that which they provide for themselves. These people too are in a cage: a cage constructed from poverty. Share their misery and hopelessness.
Mrs Mary Hutton, Founder of the Fund with Serey - an infant Sun Bear
There are people thousands of miles away who feel anger and despair when they think of captive bears, and the countries that exploit their wildlife. Counter productive feelings that slowly form into the bars of a cage, which holds both heart, and mind prisoner.
In a small area in Asia people work to save bears. Once poachers, they have been given the opportunity to protect the very animals they once sought to capture. Such projects radiate hope for the future: hope for sustainability of both wildlife and community alike. Hope, which allows us to escape that first cage: that of mental despair.

The sun bear, also known as the honey bear, is also the world's smallest and least studied bear. They also have a reputation as one of the most ferocious animals in the rainforest. Because they are so rare, very little research has been done on sun bears.
    Habitat
    • The sun bear thrives in the hot and humid lowland tropical rainforests where it rains more than 100 inches (254 cm) a year and temperatures stay constant around 78 to 82 degrees Fahrenheit. They spend most of their life in trees where thay can forage for a huge variety of fruits and nuts year-round.
    Distribution
    • Today the sun bear exists in the forests throughout southeast Asia from northern Burma and Bangladesh, south and east across Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, and Thailand and south to Malaysia and the islands of Sumatra and Borneo. Because of large scale habitat destruction, it is likely that their range has been reduced in northern and western regions.

    Bear With Us
Bear With Us Inc Bears are mammals that are often associated with North America and Russia. There are a number of types of bears: American Black Bear, Asiatic Black, Brown Bear, Polar Bear, Panda Bear, Sloth Bear, Spectacled Bear, and Sun Bear. Each species has its own unique characteristics, although belonging to one family; they all have much in common. Polar bears live on cold Arctic ice. Brown bears inhabit dense forests and mountain regions of the western United States. The American Black Bear is found throughout North America. The Asiatic Black Bear inhabits Southeast Asia. The Spectacled Bear is native to South America. There have been many discussions concerning whether the Panda is a bear or not. At one time the Panda was considered to be more closely related to the raccoon family. Genetic tests proved the Panda's right to belong to the bear family. A bear is a large carnivorous mammal, possessing a heavy body, short tail, and short, rounded ears. A bear has plantigrade feet with five clawed toes. A very powerful animal, the bear has a thick, shaggy fur. Bears have short, strong legs and large feet. Each foot has five toes with long claws.
    Bears - Behavior
Bears usually lead a solitary way of life. They do not tend to gather in groups. The mating season is summer. During this season, a male and a female bear may live together for about a month. Bears spend much of the wintertime in a so-called winter sleep. Many scientists describe this period of sleeping as "incomplete hibernation." Bears consume large amounts of food during late summer and store fat within its body for energy needed during the winter sleep.

How small are the smallest adult bears? Malayan sun bears are the smallest bears in the world. They grows to be only four feet (1.2 m) long and 140 pounds (65 kg). Also known as "honey bears," these bears live in southeast Asian tropical rain forests and eat fruit, honey, insects, and small vertebrates. Sun bears are named for the crescent-shaped marking of orange-yellow fur on their chests, which according to legend represents the rising sun. Although smaller than other bears, sun bears are among the most dangerous animals in the Asian jungles. However, due to poaching and hunting, they are also the most endangered of all bear species. Ape Man The sun bear is a rather small member of the bear family which makes its home in the lowland tropical rainforests of Southeast Asia. It is covered with a black coat made of sleek, short hairs. It has a white or yellowish patch on its chest shaped like a half-moon. It has a muzzle which is both yellower and shorter than that of a black bear. Sometimes the light color extends up over the eyes. The long, pointed claws are curved with hairless soles, likely as an adaptive measure to help in climbing trees. The ears of the sun bear are smaller and rounder than those of other bears. The teeth of the sun bear are flatter than those of other bears and the canines are long enough to protrude between the lips. The omnivorous sun bear lives on a diet consisting mostly of termites, birds, small mammals, and even bits of oil palms, and other commercial crops. Sun bears are the smallest of all the bears. The adults only weigh up to 145 pounds, and measure at the longest 60 inches. This bear can be found in Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, Burma, Bangledesh, and many other countries in the Southeastern portions of Asia. However, poaching and deforestration have been slowly eroding the available population and habitat.
