The bears we know today actually have as their ancestors bears that have been evolving for some 40 million years. Fossils of the earliest "true bear", Ursavus elemensis, have been found from the Mioncene Epoch in what was then sub-tropical Europe, and show a small dog-size animal with characteristics that show a blending of dog and bear traits. It is believed that all modern bears stem from Ursavus elemensis. Two important primitive bears that should be mentioned are Arctodus simus, the giant short faced bear, and Ursus speleaus, the European cave bear. The giant short faced bear is the largest land carnivore that ever lived. It had extremely long legs, sharp claws and a reach of over 14 feet tall. It is believed that this ancient giant is related to today's small-sized spectacled bear. The cave bear, while feared and worshipped by Neanderthal culture, was actually a herbivore by nature. Cave bears survived two ice ages but were eventually became extinct, leaving a wealth of fossils that helped excite the early paleontologists of the 19th century. From the ancient cave bears evolved the brown bear, Ursus arctos, the American black bear, Ursus americanus and the Asiatic black bear, Selenarctos thibetanus. And from the brown bear evolved the newest species of bear (only 20,000 years old) the polar bear, Ursus maritimus.

Hibernate means to sleep for a long period of time. The American Black Bears are known to hibernate about five to seven months each year. Some bears may not hibernate in the true sense, but will become less active during this time, usually during the winter months. It is not known if all bears hibernate in the wild. SLOTH BEAR Melursus ursinus
Description:
The sloth bear is a medium size bear weighing between 175 and 310 pounds with a body length of between 60 and 75 inches. It has a very shaggy coat of black fur, with grey and brown hairs mixed in. On the chest there is a white or cream colored U shaped or Y shaped patch of fur. This same lighter color occurs around the muzzle and sometimes extends around the eyes. The snout is very mobile and the nostrils can be closed voluntarily.
Range: It is found in India, Bangladesh, Nepal , Bhutan and Sri Lanka.
Habitat: The sloth bear prefers grasslands and forested area at predominantly lower altitudes. It is more often found in drier forests and areas with rock outcroppings. Diet: A sloth bear's diet is mostly comprised of termites for which this species is specially adapted. Its upper incisors are missing, forming a gap, and its lips can extend to form a tube. With this, the sloth bear is able to suck up the termites, making a sound that can be heard from over 330 feet away. Other items in the sloth bear diet are fruit and other plant matter, eggs, insects, honeycomb and carrion. Social Organization: Little is known about this bear in the wild but it is thought that they maintain small territories and live as solitary individuals except when a female is caring for her young. They do have several specific vocalizations. What little is known about the sloth bear in the wild has often been learned from field studies done from the back of elephants.

Bears of the World Fossil records and historical data indicate that at one time there may have been hundreds of bear species worldwide, on all continents except Antarctica and Australia. Today, eight bear species remain in North and South America, Europe, and Asia. All of the bears found at the Vince Shute Wildlife Sanctuary are American black bears ( Ursus americanus). Below you will find a photo and a brief description of each of the other seven species. For additional information, see the Additional Reading page. The status of each species is listed, according to the International Union for Conservation's (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species for the year 2000. For complete listings and criteria, please visit www.redlist.org ASIATIC BLACK BEAR ( Selenarctos thibetanus)
Description
: This species is similar in size and appearance to the American black bear, although the fur is longer, soft, and shaggy. Adult males weigh from 200 to 255 pounds (92-116 kg.) and adult females weigh between 110 and 225 pounds(50-102 kg.). The Asiatic black bear is an excellent tree climber, as are most of the bear species. Its predominantly herbivorous diet resembles that of its American cousin: plants, fruits, insects, bees' nests, and invertebrates are preferred foods. The most obvious difference between the two species is the chest blaze. This feature is found in about 25% of American black bears, and can vary in size and shape. In contrast, nearly all Asiatic black bears have cream-colored chest blazes in a crescent shape, giving the species its other common name: "moon bear."

It has a black coat with a white pattern extending around the eyes like glasses or spectacles. The Spectacled bear eats pond fronds, figs, and cactus. While mostly herbivorous , the Spectacled bear also eats insects and even livestock. The Spectacled bear is native to the Andes in South America, where it prefers humid forests or grasslands. It also will live in scrub deserts if necessary. After a gestation period of about 250 days, the mother Spectacled bear gives birth to a litter of 1 to 3 (but usually only 2) small cubs. Grizzlies and Alaskan brown bears fish for salmon, but the largely herbivorousspectacled bear rarely eats anything other than vegetation.
http://www.scz.org/animals/bears.html
Bears are large heavy mammals belonging to the family Ursidae . They are found largely in northern temperate regions and are widely distributed in North America, Europe, and Asia. Bears have a shaggy coat and a short tail and walk flat on the soles of their broad feet. They normally have a short, thick neck, a rounded head, pointed muzzle, short ears, and small eyes. They can stand erect and have powerful limbs and long, curved claws. Bears have poor eyesight, and most have only fair hearing. Their sense of smell, however, is extremely keen. Bears are closely related to the dog and the raccoon and are the most recently evolved of the carnivores. The diet of bears generally is varied and flexible. Most species are especially fond of ants and honey. Bears also eat bees, seeds, roots, nuts, berries, and insect larvae. Their meat diet includes rodents, fishes, deer, pigs, and lambs. Grizzlies and Alaskan brown bears fish for salmon, but the largely herbivorous spectacled bear rarely eats anything other than vegetation. Although they possess a fierce and aggressive reputation, the bear is more often a peaceful and solitary creature. They prefer to roam in areas undisturbed by humans. Despite the fact that bears in the wild are used to wandering, most of them can adjust easily to life in captivity. Zookeepers agree that bears are among the shrewdest and most intelligent of animals kept in zoos.

Ucumari, The Short-Faced Bear of South America
The spectacled bear, also called the "ucumari" or Andean bear, received its popular name because it appears to be wearing glasses.
It is the only bear found in South America where it is the largest carnivore and the second largest land mammal next to the tapir .
The spectacled bear is directly descended from the extinct short-faced "bulldog" bear (Arctodus simus) which roamed north and south america as the largest predator during the last ice age.
Population and Distribution The spectacled bear is a rare and endangered species. It is possible that there are less than 2,000 of these bears still in the wild. The cloud forest habitat in which it lives is rapidly disappearing under the increasing deforestation of the land to support subsistence agriculture.
Its range extends along the slopes of the Andes mountains in Venezuela, Columbia, Ecuador, Peru and Bolivia. Small pockets of a few spectacled bears may also live in southern Panama and northern Argentina on the respective northern and southern limits of the Andean mountain range.
Its preferred habitat is the moist tropical forest which exists between the desert scrub present at lower elevations and the alpine meadows at the higher elevations within the Andes.
