Spectacled Bear Habitat: Spectacled bears are found in Venezuela, Colombia, Bolivia, Panama, Brazil and Argentina. And they stay way up in the Andes mountains from 6000 ft. to 13,800 ft., above the snow line. Body: They have light-colored rings around their eyes which look like eyeglasses. The bears have fewer ribs than other bears, only 13 pairs of ribs. They are 7.25 ft long and have a short tail. They also have powerful jaws. Hibernation: They hibernate way up the Andes mountains starting in June. When they hibernate they have one to three cubs between November and February. Reproduction: They teach their young how to live on their own and to survive. They show them how to catch food, where to get it and how to get it. Food: They eat fruit, sugarcane, corn and honey. They also eat plants, leaves, palm nuts, cactus and bromeliad hearts. They also eat other animals if they have to. Most bears are omnivores (they eat both plants and meat); polar bears are the only exception - they are carnivores (they eat only only meat). There are eight species of bears alive today, including American black bears ( Ursus americanus ), Asiatic black bears ( Ursus thibetanus ), brown bears ( Ursus arctos = the grizzly bear), giant pandas, polar bears, sloth bears ( Melursus ursinus ), spectacled bears ( Tremarctos ornatus ), and sun bears ( Helarctos malayanus ). The smallest bear is the Sun bear (it is also called the honey bear and the Malay bear).

Bears Bear species
There are 8 species, or kinds, of bear. Most bears live wild in the the northern hemisphere. There are no bears in the wild in Africa, Antarctica, or Australia. The 8 species of bear are: Brown bears, Malayan Sun bears, Polar bears, Asiatic Black bears, American Black bears, Giant Pandas, Sloth bears and Spectacled bears. The biggest bear is the Alaskan Brown bear . It grows to be about 2.7 metres long and can weigh up to 770 kilograms. The smallest bear is the Sun bear . It is also called the Malayan Sun bear . It grows to be about 100 centimetres long and weighs up to 45 kilograms. Malayan sun bear cub Food
Bears are omnivores (say om-nee-vors ). This means that they hunt and kill other animals for food, but also eat other foods such as fruit, leaves, insects, honey and fish. Movement
Bears can move quickly. Polar bears can run at speeds of up 56 kilometres an hour. Bears can climb trees and swim. Reproduction
Most kinds of bears live alone. A male and a female bear stay together for a few weeks and mate but then the male leaves and the female finds a place to give birth to her cubs. She may go to a cave or dig a burrow with her strong claws. Female polar bears dig dens in the snow. Usually, a female has two cubs, but sometimes there are up to four. When the cubs are born they have no fur and their eyes are closed. The cubs drink milk from their mother's body. After about one month the cubs can see and they have fur. When they are 2 or 3 months old the cubs follow their mother out of the den. She teaches them to hunt. Cubs may stay with their mother for up to two years.

Brazilian Tapir Columbian ... Sumatran Tiger Trust This is the only bear to be found in South America, it lives in Peru, Venezuela, Columbia, Ecuador and West Bolivia. Males weigh around 175kg and females average 65kgs....the largest bear ever recorded, weighed in at over 1000kg, it was a Polar Bear. They are usually dark brown or black with white patterns around the eyes and front of the face The markings can sometimes look like spectacles and this is where the name comes from! They are excellent climbers, search for fruit and make roosting sites in trees. The favourite foods of Spectacled Bears are fruits, leaves, bamboo hearts, insects and small rodents. Meat is only around 4% of their diet. They normally sleep a lot through the day and are more active early and late. Sadly this bear is hunted for its meat, skin and fat. This, along with habitat destruction, has caused the Spectacled bear to be an endangered species and very rare. They are hunted because locals believe they are livestock predators and yet they don’t eat meat in quantity, they have a liking for corn and get shot when raiding farms. Like all bears they are solitary except when mother and cubs are together.

General info about bears
Bear, large carnivorous mammal closely related to pandas, raccoons, and dogs. They are distinguished from other carnivore families by having heavy bodies, a short tail and short, rounded ears, plantigrade feet (both heel and sole touching the ground, as in humans), and a hind foot with five toes. They also lack the shearing teeth common to most carnivores; the crushing molars of bears are believed to be an adaptation for a plant diet. Although bears are classified as carnivores, the different species vary widely in their feeding habits. For example, the polar bear feeds almost exclusively on seals and other animals, but may also graze on vegetation; the grizzly eats grasses, herbs, berries, and nuts as well as living or dead animals.
Kinds and Habitats
Bears occupy a diversity of habitats, but human encroachment has squeezed them primarily into mountain, forest, and arctic wildernesses. The animals occur on all continents except Africa, Antarctica, and Australia. (Crowther's bear of North Africa's Atlas Mountains is believed to be extinct.)
The Arctic coast areas of northern countries are the home of the polar bear, the only marine bear. It is also known as the ice bear in some languages because of its preference for sea ice for hunting; the bottoms of its paws are furred for traction. Brown bears have been successful in the plains and forests of the North Temperate Zone. Their range is dangerously reduced in the lower United States, but they are surviving and hunted in Alaska and western Canada. Variants include the largest bear, the Kodiak of Alaska, which weighs up to 780 kg (1700 lb) and is as much as 3 m (10 ft) long. The closely related grizzly is named for its white-tipped fur. Remnant populations of European brown bears live in scattered mountain regions.

Interview with Marcio Rogerio Azevede Lima from our Sao Carlos Works in Brazil about the Parque Ecologico and the two newborn spectacled bears.
Mr. Lima, how long have you been working for Volkswagen in Sao Carlos?
I started six years ago as an environmental analyst, responsible for environmental management in the works. Now, as a supervisor, I am responsible for environmental management and the electricity, water and gas supplies and I work closely with the employee responsible for the administration of the environmental management system. I am also the contact for associations working on protection of the environment and for projects developed in co-operation with the local community.
The partnership between Volkswagen and the park developed from the construction of a large animal enclosure. We have also assisted the captive breeding programme.
What sort of a park is it?

BEARS Bear is a large, powerful animal with thick, shaggy fur. Bears prey on other animals and are classified by zoologists as carnivoresthat is, animals that eat chiefly meat. But most bear species also eat other foods, including fruit, nuts, leaves, insects, and fish. The Alaskan brown bear is the largest carnivore that lives on land. It grows about 9 feet (2.7 meters) long and may weigh up to 1,700 pounds (770 kilograms). The sun bear, also called the Malayan bear, is the smallest bear. It is 3 to 4 feet (91 to 120 centimeters) long and weighs only 60 to 100 pounds (27 to 45 kilograms).
Most wild bears live north of the equator. They are found in Asia, Europe, and North America, and in the Arctic near the North Pole. Only one species, the spectacled bear, lives in South America. No wild bears live in Africa, Antarctica, or Australia. The body of a bear Most bears have heavy bodies with long, thick fur, loose skin, and large, hairy heads. Bears have small eyes and cannot see well. Their small, rounded ears stand straight up, but they hear only fairly well. They have an excellent sense of smell. Bears have short, strong legs and large feet. Each foot has five toes, and each toe ends in a long, heavy claw. The claws can always be seen because, unlike those of a cat, they have no covering. A bear uses its claws to dig up roots, ants, termites, and other food, or to tear its prey.
A bear's walk differs from that of most other animals. Most animals walk and run on their toes. A bear, like a human being, puts the entire sole of its foot on the ground with each step and the heel of the foot strikes the ground first. The hind feet of a large bear may be 12 to 16 inches (30 to 41 centimeters) long. The large feet, the short legs, and heel-first way of stepping make bears look slow and clumsy. But bears are agile and can move fast. Polar bears can run at speeds of up to 35 miles (56 kilometers) an hour.

Polar bears are excellent swimmers they can swim up to six miles per hour and there have been reports of these animals being seen swimming 100 miles from shore! They travel these great distances on land too, in search of food. To maintain its body weight, a Polar bear must eat the equivalent of at least one seal per week. Polar bears are not always solitary animals. Males will sometimes form friendships that can last for weeks or even years. Females will stay with their young for up to three years. SIZE: Up to 10 feet long, weighs over 1,300lbs. The biggest bear except for the Brown Kodiak bear. DIET: Most carnivorous of all the bear species. Favourite food is seals.
