Scientific name Tremarctos ornatus English name Spectacled Bear
Andean Bear Nederlandse naam Brilbeer Deutsche name Homepage Ursidae - Bears - Beerachtigen Spectacled bears are small, shaggy, and black. They have yellow rings around the eyes and often a lighter colored, usually cream, muzzle, throat, and chest. The markings are variable and can extend to the throat in some, the chest in others, or be totally absent. The coat ranges from black, brown, or even reddish in color. This species gets in name from the circles around the eyes which make the bears appear as though they are wearing spectacles. One unique characteristic of these bears is that they have 13 pairs of ribs while other bear species have 14 pairs. Mating usually takes place between April and June, and the litters are born between November and February. Spectacled bears are primarily nocturnal and crepuscular. They sleep between or under large tree roots, on a tree trunk, or in a cave during the day. Their claws are specialized for climbing and they will spend days in trees. While in a tree, they sometimes make large platforms out of broken branches, which they use to reach fruit. These bears are not hibernators, probably because their food supply is available year round. They are timid and try to avoid humans. It is estimated that there are fewer than 2,000 of these bears left in the wild. Habitat destruction and fragmentation due to agricultural growth are the biggest causes of these bears' decline. Hunting by sportsmen and landowners are also contributing factors, dating back to the 1800's, when the Spanish first arrived in South America.

The Spectacled Bear
The last of the lineage of short-faced bears, the spectacled bear evolved as the sole bear species isolated in South America after the end of the last ice age. Spectacled bears are medium-sized by bear standards, but they are the second-largest land mammals in South America. Only the tapir is larger. Its name refers to the light-colored markings surrounding the eyes. One of its common names in Spanish means “bear with eyeglasses”; another means “the bromeliad eating bear”.
The evolutionary paths that this intriguing bear has followed to reach this niche are paralleled in complexity and variety by the actual trails across landscapes that its ancestors trod to reach their last stronghold in the Andes Mountains. From early Tremarctine (short-faced) bears in eastern Asia about 15 million years ago, this trail led across the Bering Land Bridge to what is now Alaska.

Executive Summary
Status Survey and Conservation Action Plan: Bear
This status survey and conservation action plan describes the status and conservation needs of the eight bear species of the world. These species currently live in more than 65 countries/autonomous regions in four continents. They are a diverse group of large mammals living in a variety of habitats from tropical rain forests to arctic ice. Bears are the umbrella species in most of the ecosystems they inhabit. The conservation of bears and their habitats will preserve the most biodiversity in these areas and focus management efforts on preserving watershed resources that also sustain human populations. Conservation efforts for bears in North America and Western Europe are much more intensive and coordinated than in Asia or Latin America where research and management are minimal or nonexistent. The exception to this in Asia is the intensive conservation of the giant panda in China. The greatest threats to bears exist in Asia, the Middle East, and parts of South America. (Table 1).

Bear With Us
Bear With Us Inc Bears are mammals that are often associated with North America and Russia. There are a number of types of bears: American Black Bear, Asiatic Black, Brown Bear, Polar Bear, Panda Bear, Sloth Bear, Spectacled Bear, and Sun Bear. Each species has its own unique characteristics, although belonging to one family; they all have much in common. Polar bears live on cold Arctic ice. Brown bears inhabit dense forests and mountain regions of the western United States. The American Black Bear is found throughout North America. The Asiatic Black Bear inhabits Southeast Asia. The Spectacled Bear is native to South America. There have been many discussions concerning whether the Panda is a bear or not. At one time the Panda was considered to be more closely related to the raccoon family. Genetic tests proved the Panda's right to belong to the bear family. A bear is a large carnivorous mammal, possessing a heavy body, short tail, and short, rounded ears. A bear has plantigrade feet with five clawed toes. A very powerful animal, the bear has a thick, shaggy fur. Bears have short, strong legs and large feet. Each foot has five toes with long claws.
Bears - Behavior
Bears usually lead a solitary way of life. They do not tend to gather in groups. The mating season is summer. During this season, a male and a female bear may live together for about a month. Bears spend much of the wintertime in a so-called winter sleep. Many scientists describe this period of sleeping as "incomplete hibernation." Bears consume large amounts of food during late summer and store fat within its body for energy needed during the winter sleep.

28. Spectacled Bear
spectacled bears get their name from the light colored rings around theireyes that make some of the bears look like they are wearing glasses.
http://arktofile.net/pages/bear_spec.html
Spectacled bear Latin Names: Tremarctos Ornatus
Subfamily: Tremarctinae.
Tremarctos Ornatus F.G. Cuvier, 1825. OTHER NAMES:
Short-faced bear, Andean Bear, Ucumari CHARACTERISTICS:
The spectacled bear is small and dark, ranging in color from black to brown, and a few have a reddish tinge. It has distinctive circular or semicircular creamy white markings (spectacles) on the face around the eyes, reminiscent of spectacles. Lines and patches of white usually extend onto the throat and chest as well. The amount and pattern of the white markings can be quite variable. Spectacled bears get their name from the light colored rings around their eyes that make some of the bears look like they are wearing glasses. These shy bears are the only species that live in South America. Little is known about these rare bears because of a lack of research and the remoteness of the areas where they live. Because they live in warm climates, their fur is thinner than that of North American bear species. Spectacled bears have long claws that allow them to climb trees very well. They also have large, flat molars so they can chew very tough plants that are found in the rainforest such as palms, cacti, and orchid bulbs. SIZE:
There are few measurements available for this bear. Adult spectacled bears can weigh between 140 and 385 pounds (63-173 kg). However, the body length of adults is about 150 to 180 centimeters (60 to 72 inches) and males may be 30 to 40 percent larger than females. Males weigh 100 to 155 kilograms (220 t o 340 pounds) and females weigh 64 to 82 kilograms (140 to 180 pounds). At birth, cubs weigh from 300 to 360 grams (10 to 11 1/2 ounces). When standing on all fours, the average male measures about 30 inches (76 cm) tall at the shoulder and approximately 7.5 feet (228 cm) from nose to tail. Females are slightly smaller. At birth, cubs weigh from 10 to 11 ounces Longevity 25+ years. The spectacled bear is the 2nd largest mammal and the largest carnivore in South America

EUROPEAN COORDINATION OF BEARS
Drs. Koen Brouwer, National Foundation for Research in Zoological Gardens/ EEP Executive Office, c/o Amsterdam Zoo, P.O. Box 20164, 1000 HD Amsterdam, The Netherlands.
Introduction
A European Endangered Species Programme (EEP) was initiated for the spectacled bear Tremarctos ornatus several years ago; this programme is co-ordinated by Bryan Carroll of the Jersey Wildlife Preservation Trust. Two years ago it was also decided to establish an EEP-programme for the sloth bear Melursus ursinus . Dick Dekker of Amsterdam Zoo was appointed as co-ordinator for this species and the National Foundation for Research in Zoological Gardens (NFRZG) is providing him assistance in organising and managing this breeding programme. The spectacled bear and the sloth bear populations in Europe suffer from the same problem: their numbers are too low for a successful breeding programme. Co-ordinators of both programmes therefore may have to expand the number of animal spaces in European zoos used for their species. Consequently, the two species could become "

    Hagerman Fossil Beds N.M.
Everyone expects units of the National Park Service to have bears! There are grizzlies in Glacier, black bears in Great Smokey, and Yellowstone has both. For those interested in Hagerman Fossil Beds you'll be glad to know that we do too. Of course. our bears are said to be more than 3 million years old so they don't eat much, which is a real advantage to the rangers because we don't have to worry about visitors feeding them. Unlike the other parks, our Hagerman bears are rare and won't be a common sight to visitors. In fact they are so rare that in the 65 years that paleontological research has been conducted here, only two bones have been found, a lower jaw and the part of the upper arm bone (humerus) that fits into the elbow joint. As you might imagine, with an animal this uncommon, there was quite a bit of excitement, when Hugh Harper, one of the park' s VIPs found another partial bear humerus while helping the park paleontologists conduct survey work on the monument. Comparison of our new find with illustrations in the scientific literature confirmed our initial suspicions. The new find is not from a relative of the black or grizzly bear, but rather is related to the Spectacled Bear that today lives in parts of northwestern South America. This is one of many animals found at the monument that forms part of our South American "connection".

    The Spectacled Bear
The Spectacled Bear, or Tremarctos Ornatus, is an endangered species. This rare bear can only be found in a few
elusive spots in the world. Many endangered species all over the world don’t deserve the respect and care that they
need. That is why many endangered species often become extinct or remain on the endangered species list for the
remainder of their survival on Earth. Today, as more species become endangered, more people become involved in
their care. Many things are being done to save endangered species, including safe, poacher-free environments in
captivity, and wildlife preservations, to name a few. Only a handful of zoos and sanctuaries around the globe are
lucky enough to be able to try to breed and care for rare endangered species.
The Phoenix Zoo is an example of this. Right now, they have captive many endangered species, including the almost

At Connecticut's Beardsley Zoo we're proud of Nick and Nora, our Spectacled Bears. Here are some quick facts about them: Nick is named after St. Nick because he was born on December 25, 1991. They are not "mommy and baby" but boy and girl (Nick is the larger one). Nora may look small but is a giant for a female Spectacled Bear, weighing just over 160 pounds. In order to get at the good stuff inside a coconut, Nora will stand on her hind legs and toss the coconut to the ground with her forepaws Pound for pound, bears have about six times the strength of humans. Nick weighs nearly 500 pounds, you do the math! Range:
This rare and elusive animal is the only South American bear species. These bears inhabit the foothills of the Andes Mountains from western Venezuela to Bolivia at altitudes of up to 14,000 feet.

. . . . . Tremarctos ornatus SIZE: Adult males weigh 250-300 pounds and can grow to 5-6 feet in length and stand 30" at shoulder. Females are smaller and weigh 150-200 pounds. RANGE: Wooded, mountainous regions of Venezuela, Columbia, Ecuador, Peru, and western Bolivia; also reported in eastern Panama and northern Argentina. Because they live along the slopes of the Andes Mountains at altitudes from 2,000-14,000 ft., are sometimes known as Andean Bears. HABITAT: The spectacled bear occupies a variety of habitats. It prefers the humid forests located between 6,200 and 7,700 feet and coastal thorn forests when water is present. It also uses high altitude grasslands. Currently reduced to the Andean slopes due to human encroachment on other habitats. DIET: Omnivorous, but eat little or no meat. At least 95% of their diet consists of fruits, palm stalks, new leaves, bamboo shoots, bromeliad bulbs, and cactus fruit. Occasionally eat rabbits, ants, mice, birds, llamas, and domestic cattle. LIFE SPAN: May live about 20 years in the wild and from 20 to 36 years in captivity.
