An undercover operation nets poachers in India
Since September 2003, One Voice and Wildlife SOS have carried out undercover surveillance of the Indian poachers who capture sloth bears (a category-one endangered species under CITES) in the Sambalpur region. This operation has paid off, with nine arrests in January 2004 and the confiscation of five cubs.
These bears would have become "dancing bears", held captive in terrible conditions by Kalandars (gypsies) who traditionally show bears in public.
The investigation
Representatives of One Voice and SOS Wildlife focused their investigation on the state of Orissa, where poaching is a long-standing problem, and around the village of Agra where the majority of bears and their keepers are based.
Nothing would have been possible without the help of certain Kalandars who were ultimately moved by the fate of these bears.
By infiltrating the poaching ring, investigators were able to find out the exact place and date of capture as well as when and where the cubs would be sold.

Bears Polar bears in the Arctic; black bears, brown bears, grizzly bears, in North America bears throughout the Andes; black bears in the Himalayas and south-east Asia; brown bears from western Europe to Kamchatka and from the Near East to Japan; sloth bears in India and Ceylon; and sun bears in Burma, Malaya and Sumatra. A Native American saying holds: "A pine needle fell. The eagle saw it. The deer heard it. The bear smelled it." The majority, polar bears excluded, are forest bears in greater or lesser degree, because although omnivorous, they are predominately vegetarian, with berries, nuts, grass and fruits an essential part of their diet. Forests also provide shelter in which the male bear can find a den in the winter and the female bear rear their cubs. The forest also poses as a refuge from the torment of man's ways. Some of the Himalayan black bears inhabit arid plateaus of rock and scrub. A southern race of black or brownish bear live in the parched mountains of northern Peru. Loss of habitat is widely understood to be the most serious long-term threat to the survival of bears, especially grizzly bears, in British Columbia.

Rescue centre for sloth bears creates controversy
By Our Staff Reporter BANGALORE, SEPT. 6. The construction of a rescue centre for sloth bears in Bannerghatta National Park has kicked up a storm, with the Institute for Natural Resources Conservation, Education, Research and Training (INCERT) furnishing photographic evidence to show the bulldozing of prime forest area for the purpose. While INCERT put the extent of the area at 50 acres in the park's "Varadahalli belt", a prime elephant habitat, forest officials maintained that the levelling of "thorny bushes" had not exceeded eight acres. The bulldozing had been carried out to create a moat to prevent the sloth bears from crossing over, the officials said. "The bulldozing operation was started with a big semicircle, and all trees and shrubs were uprooted in the process and pushed to the sides. Later the operation was carried out inside the semicircle too," the INCERT report said. The Deputy Conservator of Forests (Headquarters), Mr. G. Vidyasagar, said only thorny bushes had been removed from the area. "Even this was done to grow jackfruit trees, prepare an apiary and anthills on which the sloth bears thrive. The intention is to create a natural food source for the animals. The sloth bears will be brought here only after the creation of this habitat, which will take nine to 12 months," he said.

Torture of the Dancing Bears
Dancing bears are a traditional spectacle dating back to the 16th Century, when they often performed for the amusement of the ruling classes. Bears are seen as protectors of children and a safeguard against ghosts and evil spiritsThey are also used as entertainment at traditional weddings, village fairs and at events to celebrate the birth of a child. WSPA believes that, following the success of its Libearty campaign in stamping out dancing bears in Turkey and Greece, and with the co-operation of the Indian Government, it will also be able to relegate this cruel tradition into the history books.ends The following materials are available upon request: new broadcast quality footage of India's dancing bears, including powerful images of captured bear cubs and Indian village children colour photographs of India's dancing bears copies of the 'Dancing Bears in India' report interviews with WSPA investigators.

Bear With Us
Bear With Us Inc Bears are mammals that are often associated with North America and Russia. There are a number of types of bears: American Black Bear, Asiatic Black, Brown Bear, Polar Bear, Panda Bear, Sloth Bear, Spectacled Bear, and Sun Bear. Each species has its own unique characteristics, although belonging to one family; they all have much in common. Polar bears live on cold Arctic ice. Brown bears inhabit dense forests and mountain regions of the western United States. The American Black Bear is found throughout North America. The Asiatic Black Bear inhabits Southeast Asia. The Spectacled Bear is native to South America. There have been many discussions concerning whether the Panda is a bear or not. At one time the Panda was considered to be more closely related to the raccoon family. Genetic tests proved the Panda's right to belong to the bear family. A bear is a large carnivorous mammal, possessing a heavy body, short tail, and short, rounded ears. A bear has plantigrade feet with five clawed toes. A very powerful animal, the bear has a thick, shaggy fur. Bears have short, strong legs and large feet. Each foot has five toes with long claws.
Bears - Behavior
Bears usually lead a solitary way of life. They do not tend to gather in groups. The mating season is summer. During this season, a male and a female bear may live together for about a month. Bears spend much of the wintertime in a so-called winter sleep. Many scientists describe this period of sleeping as "incomplete hibernation." Bears consume large amounts of food during late summer and store fat within its body for energy needed during the winter sleep.

90. Bears
bears can be found throughout the world. They are generally large animals, and are characterized by a plantigrade walk (on their heels, like humans), a large body, short legs, a stub of a tail, small, round ears, and forward facing eyes.

A Sloth or Not a Sloth
In the late 1700's, the first sloth bear pelts were sent from India to Britain.
Dr. George Shaw from the British Museum originally classed them as belonging to the family of sloths, calling them bear sloths.
It was not until 1810, when a live sloth bear was shipped to Paris, that the classification error was corrected and the name reversed to sloth bear.
Population and Distribution It is thought that the sloth bear is in steady decline with somewhere between 7,000 to 10,000 bears still living in the wild. They live in the forests on the island of Sri Lanka, India, Bhutan, Nepal and Bangladesh.
Its preferred habitat includes a wide variety of forests types ranging from the thorn forests of northern India to the wet tropical forests further south. Widespread land clearing and deforestation continue to reduce its available habitat.
Vital Statistics The sloth bear is a large mammal whose size and weight show high variability depending on food availability, climatic conditions, etc.
Adult sloth bears stand approximately 85 centimeters (2 3/4 feet) tall at the shoulders when on all fours and have a length of about 140 to 170 centimeters (4 1/2 to 5 1/2 feet). Their tail is slightly longer than other bears at 16 to 18 centimeters (6 to 7 inches) long.

SLOTH BEAR REHABILITATION CENTRE INAUGURATED BANGALORE, November 30, 2002: Freed from the clutches of their captors, these sloth bears will now have a chance to be as wild as they can get. A bear rehabilitation centre which will house 22 rescued bears was inaugurated today at the Bannerghatta Biological Park near here. The project, initiated in 2000 in the Bannerghatta Biological Park, is a collaborative effort of the Zoo Authority of Karnataka, the forest department of the Government of Karnataka, Wildlife Trust of India (WTI) and the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW), apart from the Central Zoo Authority, Ministry of Environment and Forests, Government of India. The project is being developed over 40 acres of land in the Bannerghatta Biological Park, while the technical expertise is being provided by international experts on bears. The sloth bears will have access to its natural foods like termites, and other insects, honey and a variety of fruit-bearing trees in their new abode. They will also be fed some quantities of substitute foods like cooked ragi (a cereal common in South India), cooked rice, jaggery, coconut, sugarcane, bananas, milk, and other veterinary supplements.
