...awarded to our website! Bears of the World Fossil records and historical data indicate that at one time there may have been hundreds of bear species worldwide, on all continents except Antarctica and Australia. Today, eight bear species remain in North and South America, Europe, and Asia. All of the bears found at the Vince Shute Wildlife Sanctuary are American black bears ( Ursus americanus). Below you will find a photo and a brief description of each of the other seven species. For additional information, see the Additional Reading page. The status of each species is listed, according to the International Union for Conservation's (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species for the year 2000. For complete listings and criteria, please visit www.redlist.org ASIATIC BLACK BEAR ( Selenarctos thibetanus)
Description
: This species is similar in size and appearance to the American black bear, although the fur is longer, soft, and shaggy. Adult males weigh from 200 to 255 pounds (92-116 kg.) and adult females weigh between 110 and 225 pounds(50-102 kg.). The Asiatic black bear is an excellent tree climber, as are most of the bear species. Its predominantly herbivorous diet resembles that of its American cousin: plants, fruits, insects, bees' nests, and invertebrates are preferred foods. The most obvious difference between the two species is the chest blaze. This feature is found in about 25% of American black bears, and can vary in size and shape. In contrast, nearly all Asiatic black bears have cream-colored chest blazes in a crescent shape, giving the species its other common name: "moon bear."

Bears Bears are large, powerful mammals. Most bears are omnivores (they eat both plants and meat); polar bears are the only exception - they are carnivores (they eat only only meat). There are eight species of bears alive today, including American black bears ( Ursus americanus ), Asiatic black bears ( Ursus thibetanus ), brown bears ( Ursus arctos = the grizzly bear), giant pandas, polar bears, sloth bears ( Melursus ursinus ), spectacled bears ( Tremarctos ornatus ), and sun bears ( Helarctos malayanus ). The smallest bear is the Sun bear (it is also called the honey bear and the Malay bear). Hibernation : During cold winter months, some bears go into a dormant state in which their heart rate is extremely low, their body temperature is relatively high, they neither eat nor release bodily waste, and they can be roused (unlike "true" hibernators such as chipmunks). In older scientific literature, hibernation used to refer only to low-body-temperature winter dormancy, but now that much more is known about this dormancy phase, some bears (like the black bear) are considered to be highly efficient hibernators (some biologists refer to these animals as "super hibernators").

sloth bears live in Sri Lanka, India, Bangladesh, Bhutan and Nepal. sloth bearshave dark black coats and a mixture of brown and gray in many individuals.
    http://animaltrial.com/animals/bearpicturesfolder/slothbearpictures/slothbeartex
Sloth bear Melursus ursinus or Ursus ursinus, the sloth bear comes from the oldest linage of true bears , dating back to 6 million years where they diverged in to a separate species, similar to what is the panda bear did and they most likely change because of climate fluctuations long enough for a new species to colonize a region. During the miocene era, it's quite possible the sloth bear first arrived in the Indian subcontinent. Habitat Sloth bears live in Sri Lanka, India, Bangladesh, Bhutan and Nepal. They live primarily in tropical rainforests and grasslands, when the monsoons arrive in between April and June, they move to higher dryer forest areas . As the monsoon rain comes to an end and the ground dries out, they move back down to the riparian flood plains and grasslands . Habitat threat Sharing much of their areas with humans, the sloth bear is losing much of its habitat because of deforestation and agriculture. They are protected by the Indian Wildlife Protection Act which prevents hunting. Only in the very most mountainous regions and protected parks do they have a stronghold . In Bhutan they are best protected by the government and the forest habitat which is still intact . Sloth bears habitat overlaps with the asiatic black bear both sharing areas along the Himalayan foothills , along the Brahmaputra River where all three tropical bears coexist together. Diet A sloth bear feeds on ants, termites which a liking particular, however being a generalist they will eat fruits, insects, honey, vegetation, and occasionally carrion if it is found quickly as carrion decomposes rapidly in the tropics.

    Introduction
Bears have fascinated us for centuries. As one of the most adaptable and versatile mammals on earth, their behavior stirs fear, awe, wonder and curiosity in us.Unfortunately, there are still many myths surrounding the lives and behavior of bears which impact on people's imagination negatively. Fossil records and historical data indicate that at one time there may have been hundreds of bear species worldwide, on all continents except Antarctica and Australia. Today, eight bear species remain in North and South America, Europe, and Asia. A valuable resource in research the different types of bears is the internet and I have found some very informative websites that can treach us all more about the types of Bears.
    The Internet Resources
    Brown Bears
    • Brown Bear resources - The brown bear (Ursus arctos) or grizzly Bear is one of the largest North American land mammals. The grizzly bear's historic range covered much of North America from the mid-plains westward to California and from central Mexico north throughout Alaska and Canada (see map). Today, the grizzly bear is found in only about 1 percent of its original range in the lower 48 states.
    • The American Bear Association - The bear species we call 'grizzly' here in North America is a subspecies of the brown bear, which is the most widespread of all bear species. Although nearly 150,000 brown bears still exist in the wild, their numbers are spread thinly in many areas and they have been completely extirpated from vast portions of their former range. In North America, brown bears occupy less than half of their former habitat.

    53. Game Warden Wildlife Jounal: BEARS
Tropical species, such as sun bears and sloth bears, do not have a winter sleepperiod. sloth bears get their name from an Old English word meaning slow.
    http://www.gamewardentv.com/learnmore/bears.htm
BEARS Bear is a large, powerful animal with thick, shaggy fur. Bears prey on other animals and are classified by zoologists as carnivoresthat is, animals that eat chiefly meat. But most bear species also eat other foods, including fruit, nuts, leaves, insects, and fish. The Alaskan brown bear is the largest carnivore that lives on land. It grows about 9 feet (2.7 meters) long and may weigh up to 1,700 pounds (770 kilograms). The sun bear, also called the Malayan bear, is the smallest bear. It is 3 to 4 feet (91 to 120 centimeters) long and weighs only 60 to 100 pounds (27 to 45 kilograms).
Most wild bears live north of the equator. They are found in Asia, Europe, and North America, and in the Arctic near the North Pole. Only one species, the spectacled bear, lives in South America. No wild bears live in Africa, Antarctica, or Australia. The body of a bear Most bears have heavy bodies with long, thick fur, loose skin, and large, hairy heads. Bears have small eyes and cannot see well. Their small, rounded ears stand straight up, but they hear only fairly well. They have an excellent sense of smell. Bears have short, strong legs and large feet. Each foot has five toes, and each toe ends in a long, heavy claw. The claws can always be seen because, unlike those of a cat, they have no covering. A bear uses its claws to dig up roots, ants, termites, and other food, or to tear its prey.
A bear's walk differs from that of most other animals. Most animals walk and run on their toes. A bear, like a human being, puts the entire sole of its foot on the ground with each step and the heel of the foot strikes the ground first. The hind feet of a large bear may be 12 to 16 inches (30 to 41 centimeters) long. The large feet, the short legs, and heel-first way of stepping make bears look slow and clumsy. But bears are agile and can move fast. Polar bears can run at speeds of up to 35 miles (56 kilometers) an hour.

This heavy coat may be an adaptation to deal with cold. These bears have long snouts, which are similar to but less elongate than those of anteaters. Their teeth are small and they lack upper incisors. The molars are broad and flat, representing a trend away from carnivory. The body structure of M. ursinus

A Sloth of Bears A broadsheet of wood engraved devices from the first twenty-five years of the press October 2002 Our press device goes back to the first days of the press, when our friend Louis Turpin, a painter, drew the first version for us: a black bear carrying a handpress on his (or her) back. We decided on this device for a number of reasons. First, as Canadians in Britain, we were nostalgic for many things Canadian, and the black bear is certainly an important character in the Canadian woods. Second, Crispin at one time worked as a bearward at the Vancouver zoo, and has a great fondness for bears, regarding them as his personal totem.
