Sloth Bear
Melursus ursinus
For a long time sloth bears were confused with another tropical animal called a sloth. These shaggy, docile bears have a unique appearance and some interesting adaptations. Unlike their North American relatives, sloth bears live together in groups where the male is part of the cubs' upbringing.
Habitat
  • Sloth bears live in warm, humid forests or in grasslands near the equator. They can live in a wide variety of forest types from dry thorn forests in the north to wet tropical forests in the south.
Distribution
  • Sloth bears live in Southeast Asia primarily in the forest areas of Sri Lanka and India. They have also been reported in Bangladesh, Nepal, and Burma. Their populations are estimated to be between 1000 and 7000.
Pysical Characteristics
Color
  • Sloth bears have long, shaggy black fur with a large white or yellow Y-shaped patch of hair on their chests. They have particularly long hair around their necks, which look slike a mane. They have little fur on their bellies and the insides of their legs.

When feeding, they can be heard sucking up termites from many miles away. Subspecies Two subspecies. Life span 20-25 years. Statistics Body length: 140-190cm, Weight: male: 80-140kg, female: 55-95kg. Physical Description Sloth bears are stocky with long, shaggy, black hair and a white U- or Y-shaped marking on the chest. They have large lips, a long tongue, a pale muzzle and well-developed hook-like claws that enable them to climb trees and dig for termites. Distribution Sloth bears live in Sri Lanka, India, Bhutan, Nepal and Bangladesh. Habitat They inhabit thorn forests, wet forests and grassland. Diet Sloth bears are omnivorous and feed on a variety of foods depending on what is available. They mainly feed on ants and termites and are specially equipped for feeding on them. They use their long claws to expose the insect's nests. Then they blow out the dirt and suck out the termites. They are able to close their nostrils to create a vacuum, and their mobile lips enable them to scoop up their prey. Their hairless muzzles are thought to be an adaptation to the stings of the insects. They also eat fruits, berries, ants, bees, honey, carcasses and sometimes small vertebrates.

Bears can be found in Europe, Asia, North and South America and the Arctic but for how much longer? Seven out of the nine bear species are vulnerable or endangered. Asiatic black bears are also known as moon bears because of the crescent shaped marking on their chests. They are found throughout Asia from Pakistan to Japan. The main threats to Asiatic black bears are deforestation and loss of habitat. They often live in hilly or mountainous forest areas, moving to the lower slopes during the winter. Logging leading to deforestation across Asia is a major threat to their survival, as is the encroachment of human settlements. Asiatic black bears are sometimes killed by farmers as they take livestock or strip the bark from valuable timber trees. These bears are also hunted or ‘farmed’ for their gall bladders and other body parts which are used in traditional medicine. The trade seems to be particularly extensive in China, Korea and Japan where prices are increasing.

From the thick stomach lining of the panda and the partially webbed paws of the polar bear, to the insect-sucking muzzle of the sloth bear, bears provide a fascinating example of the variety of specialized characteristics existing within one family. The bear family (Ursidae) consists of eight species, four of which are contained in the Ursus group: the brown bear, American black bear, Asiatic black bear and polar bear. Even within this group (known as a genus) the variation is wide. The brown and American black bears are mainly vegetarians with appropriate dental features for crushing plant material. However, the first has claws suited to digging while the other has claws more suitable for climbing. The Asiatic black bear, which also has claws for climbing, is an opportunistic omnivorous feeder (eating meat and plants as available).

Easier - A bear is a large, heavy and powerful animal with thick, shaggy fur and very short tail. Bears are omnivorous. They may eat plants, honey, insects, fish, and small animals. There are several kinds of bears, such as a brown bear, black bear, polar bear, and a grizzly bear. Harder Bears live alone; they never gather in groups except during the summer mating season when a pair may be together for a month. The solitary female gives birth to one to four cubs during the winter sleep period. Cubs grow rapidly but remain with their mother for one or two years. Bears often spend much of their winter sleeping, a state that some call hibernation. Other scientists maintain that bears do not truly hibernate because their body temperature does not drop greatly and some become active on mild days. Zoologists usually recognize eight species of bears with several subspecies or varieties. The main types are brown bears, American black bears, Asiatic black bears, panda bears, polar bears, sun bears, sloth bears, and spectacled bears. Until recently, some zoologists maintained that pandas were part of the raccoon family or belonged to their own mammal family. However, genetic testing now indicates that pandas are indeed bears.

Sloth bears are listed as threatened with extinction by CITES, The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora. CITES is a United Nations treaty that provides a means for regulating international trade in wild animals and plants. Habitat: forests and grassland areas Range: India, Nepal, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Sri Lanka Weight: 175-310 pounds. Males are generally heavier than females. Body length: 5 to 6 feet Height at the shoulder: 2.5 to 3 feet at the shoulder Lifespan: 20-30 years Fact File:
    • How did sloth bears get their name? A member of the British Museum originally classified sloth bears as a member of the sloth family. In 1810, a live sloth bear was shipped to Paris, the species was re-classified as a bear, and the name changed to sloth bear. The sloth bear is one of eight species of bears found throughout the world. Bears are found on every continent except Australia and Antarctica. The other seven species of bears are: the spectacled bear, the Asiatic black bear, the brown bear (including grizzlies), the polar bear, the sun bear, the sloth bear, and the giant panda. Koalas are sometimes referred to as 'koala bears', but they are marsupials, not bears.

Disheveled in appearance, the sloth bear leads a reclusive life in India's forests, noisily seeking out insects and fruits. Physical Description : Sloth bears have shaggy, dusty-black coats, pale, short-haired muzzles, and long, curved claws used to excavate ants and termites. A cream-colored "V" or "Y" usually marks their chests. Sloth bears' nostrils can close, protecting the animals from dust or insects when raiding termite nests or bee hives. A gap in their teeth enables them to suck up ants, termites, and other insects.
Size : Sloth bears grow five to six feet long, stand two to three feet high at the shoulder, and weigh from 120 (in lighter females) to 310 pounds (in heavy males).

    The Sloth Bear
The sloth bear, Ursus ursinus , arose from the oldest lineage of the true bears. They diverged from the main lineage of bears about 6 million years ago. Like the giant panda, it is likely that climatic fluctuations were important in isolating ancestral sloth bears in the south of Asia long enough to diverge as a separate species. It is possible that a group of bears managed to colonize the Indian subcontinent either during a warm, interglacial period in the late Miocene era, or during one of the cold periods. Cold periods occurred at that time about every 100,000 years. In one scenario, we could imagine that after the ancestral sloth bears had occupied India, the climate cooled again and a wall of glaciers descended from the Himalayas that may have blocked any movement of bears in or out of India. Another possibility is that their ancestors moved south across eastern Asia during a cold period, perhaps as far as the edge of the Himalayas.

Photo courtesy Jackson Zoological Park / ZooNet. Genera and Species: The Sloth Bear is a single species of the Ursidae family, which includes five genera and seven species (including the massive American Grizzly or Brown Bear, Ursus arctos
General Information: Although its name reminds one of the small tree-dwelling Sloth in South America, the Sloth Bear is not at all related to its namesake. The Sloth Bear is found in parts of India and Sri Lanka, far from the tropical rainforests that spawned the Edentates (but, ironically enough, in the same area as the Pangolin , which was until recently considered a member of the order Xenarthra). As a part of the Bear Family (Ursidae), Sloth Bears share many characteristics common with other bears: highly developed hearing, acute sense of smell, five claws on both their feet and paws, a powerfully built body with thick hair (usually brown, black, or rust in color), and relatively poor eyesight. Bears in general are a recent evolutionary twist, lending to their limited species number (only seven in the world to date). But the Sloth Bear is by far the most specialized of all the other bears, by virtue of its diet, its habits, and its area.
The Sloth Bear is largely nocturnal, and, like the Pangolin, is an omnivore, scavenging for what it can find. Its diet runs all the way from flowers, sugarcane, and fruits to grubs, dead animal carcasses, and small insects. Also like the Pangolin, the Sloth Bear has a specialized nose and tongue that allows it to sniff out termite nests and feed. With its claws, a Sloth Bear can easily burrow into a termite nest within minutes. Then it uses its tongue as a sort of tube, blowing away the resulting dirt and dust, and sucking the termites up into its mouth.

The sloth bear has a distinctive black and shaggy coat with a cream-colored "U" or "Y" shaped patch of fur on its chest. The hair around the neck of the sloth bear is longer than the rest and resembles a disheveled, scruffy mane. Adult sloth bears can grow to be 6 feet long, 3 feet high at the shoulder, and weigh up to 300 pounds. Diet
With a main diet of termites and ants, sloth bears are excellently equipped for survival. First, their long, curved claws allow sloth bears to dig in the mounds of ants and termites. Second, adult sloth bears lack upper incisors. This creates a gap in their mouth, allowing them to extend their vacuum-like lower lips to the ground and suck up ants and termites with ease. These noisy eaters can be heard making loud sucking noises up to 300 feet away! Depending on the season and the surrounding environment, sloth bears also eat fruit, insects, eggs, honeycomb, and occasionally cultivated crops such as sugarcane, corn, and yams. Habits
For the most part sloth bears are nocturnal, but they can be seen eating or drinking during the day. Sloth bears generally live solitary lives and mate during the hot summer months of May, June, and July. A female sloth bear usually gives birth to two cubs in her lifetime. The cubs are born blind and helpless, and remain with their mothers for a couple of years before heading out on their own. Uniquely, sloth bear cubs can even be seen riding on their mother's back.
