Polar bear, ( Ursus maritimus
The polar bear, or "Nanuuq," as the Eskimos call it, lives only in the Northern Hemisphere, on the arctic ice cap, and spends most of its time in coastal areas. Polar bears are widely dispersed in Canada, extending from the northern arctic islands south to the Hudson Bay area. They are also found in Greenland, on islands off the coast of Norway, on the northern coast of the former Soviet Union, and on the northern and northwestern coasts of Alaska in the United States. Some polar bears may make extensive north-south migrations as the pack ice recedes northward in the spring and advances southward in the fall. They also may travel long distances during the breeding season to find mates, or in search of food. The polar bear is the largest member of the bear family, with the exception of Alaska's Kodiak brown bears, which equal polar bears in size. Males stand from 8 to 11 feet tall and generally weigh from 500 to 1,000 pounds, but may weigh as much as 1,400 pounds. Females usually stand 8 feet tall and weigh 400 to 600 pounds, but may reach 700 pounds. Part of the reason the polar bear weighs so much is that is stores about a 4-inch layer of fat to keep it warm. The polar bear has a longer, narrower head and nose, and smaller ears, than other bears.

Polar Bears
Ursus Maritimus Polar bears live year round near arctic waters hunting seal and other animals, rarely coming on land except on islands and rocky points. In winter they hunt along the Arctic shelfs looking for tasty seals, fish, and even humans! Their white coats provide camouflage in the ice and snow which make them almost invisible as they stalk their prey. In winter, when they are far from land they search for breathing holes made by seals. When the seal comes up for air, the polar bear will kill it and flip it out of the water with a single blow of its great clawed paw! Polar bears are very dangerous, and grow to a huge size and weigh as much as small automobile (1000 pounds). They have longer legs than other bears and large furry feet. These big feet help to distribute their weight as they walk on thin ice in the arctic waters. Polar bears are strong swimmers and can stay submerged for two minutes at a time. Their fur is made of hollow hairs which trap air and help to insulate them in the frigid waters. In November polar bears retire to dens dug out of the snow or permafrost. The females remain until the spring when they emerge with one or two cubs who stay with them for the next year and a half. The males spend a shorter time in the dens and may be seen out and about at any time of the year.

SINGAPORE (AP) It's a wee bit early for St. Patrick's Day, but Singapore Zoo's two polar bears have turned green. The usually white coats of Sheba and her 13-year-old son, Inuka, turned green a few weeks ago from algae growing in their hollow hair shafts, said Vincent Tan, a spokesman for the zoo. "The harmless algae is the result of Singapore's warm and humid tropical conditions," Tan said. Polar bears have clear hair shafts that appear white because they reflect light. Sheba's coat was successfully bleached with hydrogen peroxide 2.5 weeks ago and Inuka will be given a similar treatment in three weeks, Tan said. The zoo wanted to observe Sheba's reaction to the treatment before bleaching Inuka, he said.

NEW YORK (CNN) The Coney Island Polar Bear Club observed its 100th anniversary Wednesday the same way it celebrated the previous 99 with a New Year's Day plunge in the Atlantic Ocean. Hundreds of spectators clad in rain gear cheered the swimmers men, women and children while they took a dip in the gray, wintry waters off Coney Island for several minutes Wednesday afternoon. The National Weather Service reported air and water temperatures in the lower to middle 40s. "It signifies life and doing crazy stuff," said swimmer Jim Walsh of Brooklyn. "It's about living your life." The club was founded in 1903 by health advocate Bernard Macfadden, according to club Vice President Tom McGann, and is one of the oldest cold-water swimming clubs in the country.

Polar Animals Theme goal
To understand which animals live in the polar regions, that polar regions are cold and where polar regions are located. Group time:
Talk to the children about polar animals. Can anyone name some? Write them down. What does "polar" mean? What is the weather like in the polar regions? Record answers. Have a globe ready to show the children where the North and South pole is. Discuss that it is very cold in the regions around the poles. These areas are called the polar regions. The land is covered by snow and ice, also known as glaciers, all year round. Ask the children what they need to wear when it's cold outside. Ask the children if animals wear coats, mittens and gloves. How do you think the animals keep warm. The fur and fat keeps them warm. Dicuss that polar bears, penguins, schrews, seals and walrus live in the polar regions. Polar bears forced to hunt on thin ice
Polar Bear is seeing its habitat shrink Story Tools YOUR E-MAIL ALERTS Arctic or Create your own Manage alerts What is this? LONDON (Reuters) Longer Arctic summers and thinning sea ice are threatening the habitats of polar bears and the livelihood of native people, scientists said Wednesday. Arctic ice has lost as much as 40 percent of its thickness in the past 50 years. But researchers, who measured it from space for the first time, said it varies more widely than previously thought and is mainly because of summer melting. "We found a direct link between lengthening summers and thinning ice," said Seymour Laxon of University College London. The thinning sea ice will not cause sea levels to rise but it could have a knock-on effect for the climate, Arctic ecosystems and wildlife. "There is a lot of concern about the effect on the people in the high Arctic. They rely on the ice to do their hunting and fishing and each year the ice season is getting shorter and shorter," Laxon said. "They are very concerned about how that is going to change their way of life," he added in an interview.
