Polar Bears are large, meat-eating bears who are well-adapted for life in their frozen Arctic environment. They are powerful swimmers who hunt seals in the water. Polar bears can run in bursts up to 25 mph (40 kph). Anatomy : Polar Bears are up to 10 feet (3 m) long and weigh about 1,700 pounds (770 kg); males are bigger than females. Polar bears have a small head, powerful jaws, and a black nose and tongue. They have a strong sense of smell. They have 42 teeth; the tail is small and flat. They have wide front paws with slightly webbed toes that help them swim. These bears paddle with their front feet and steer with the hind feet. Fur and Skin : Polar Bears have two types of fur. They have thick, woolly fur close to the skin that keeps them warm. They also have hollow guard hairs that stick up and protect the bears from getting wet. These guard hairs are like drinking straws and are clear-colored (not white). The white-looking coat camouflages them well in the snow and ice. Under the fur, Polar Bears have black skin. They also have a thick layer of fat (up to 4 inches thick) under the skin that helps keep them warm. Habitat and Range : Polar Bears live in icy Arctic areas of Alaska,Canada, Greenland, Norway, and Russia. They spend much of their time swimming in frigid seas.

You are here: BBC Animals Children's Zone Polar bear Polar bears are the largest land carnivores (meat-eaters) in the world and the largest members of the bear family. Polar bears live only in the northern Arctic where they spend most of their time on ice floes. They are found in the US (Alaska), Canada, Russia, Greenland and Norway. These areas are viciously cold, with temperatures as low as minus 55 degrees Celsuis and wind speeds of up to 30 miles per hour. By having a thick layer of fat (blubber) under their skin, the bears can stay warm in the cold environment. Polar bears are warm-blooded mammals, which means that they can regulate their body at the same temperature. Their skin is black, which helps to soak up as much heat from the sun as possible. What's more, their round and compact body shape helps to keep them warm. Polar bears don't have large ears or a long tail, because they lose warmth quickly. Instead they try to weigh as much as possible because large objects lose heat slowly, so the heaviest polar bear stays warmer longer. Polar bears hunt seals, fish, seabirds and reindeer. They will also eat vegetation and berries in the summer. Polar bears do not need to drink water, as they get all the liquid they need from the food they eat.

    Bowdoin Football
For nearly as long as there has been college football, Bowdoin has been a part of it. Established in 1889 as a varsity program, the Polar Bears have played football for 112 seasons. A member of the New England Small College Athletic Conference, Bowdoin plays against some of the most competitive teams in the country, and enjoys storied rivalries with both Bates and Colby. The Bowdoin-Colby rivalry is the third-longest rivalry in Division III history, having been played 112 times dating back to 1892 (a 56-0 Bowdoin victory). The Bowdoin-Bates game is the 10th longest Division III series, dating back to 1889 (a 62-0 Bowdoin win). Football at Bowdoin provides student-athletes with the rare opportunity to combine a competitive athletic experience with a top-rate education. The team plays its home games at Whittier Field, on the campus of Bowdoin College. Built in 1902, Whittier Field is one of the most storied football stadiums in New England, seeing over 400 games in it's existence. The Shrinking Polar Bears
Our story concerns an animal that is closely associated with this country, pride of the north; the polar bear. Now they certainly capture the imagination of many people around the world. We look at what science has to say about one set of polar bears, those living near Churchill, Manitoba, on and off the shores of Hudson Bay. Scientist Ian Stirling believes they are sending a signal from the eco-system. And as he studies their declining weight and falling birth rate, he worries something may be very wrong. The Magazine's Eve Savory takes us to "The Shrinking Bears" of Hudson Bay. They call helicopter pilot Steve Miller the "Eagle" for his acute vision. His passenger, Ian Stirling, calls Miller's ability to anticipate bear behavior, "Eagle magic". Stirling is one of the world's top authorities on polar bears. Steve Miller For 18 years "the Eagle" has maneuvered Ian Stirling and his tranquillizing dart rifle to a perfect shooting position four to five metres above the ground. "I think we're going to have to jabpole the first two with a little bit in the neck," Stirling says. "Oh yeah, the third one is down as well, that's good"

CLASS: Mammalia ORDER: Carnivora FAMILY: Ursidae Ursus maritimus CLASSIFICATION: See Carnivora RANGE: Southern edge of the Arctic Ice Pack. PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Height: 5 ft. (to shoulder) Standing height: 8 - 11 ft. Weight: Males: 880 - 990 lbs.; Females: 660 - 770 lbs. Foot size: 12 in. long, 10 in. wide DIET: Zoo: Omnivore Diet, spectrum Feline Diet and mackerel. Wild: Winter: Mostly seals often eating only the fat with the skin and the viscera - a favorite. Summer: Lemmings, salmon and other fish, berries and other plant material. In late summer will patrol coastal areas looking for whale and walrus carcasses. BEHAVIOR: Found throughout the polar region but spend most of their time along the southern edge of the ice cap on coastal land near open water. Only pregnant females undergo winter rest, though all may build dens, depending on the weather. They are solitary animals and are active at all times of the year. Polar bears are excellent swimmers, and can cruise through the water at 6 miles per hour, using only their front legs. With their eyes open, and their nostrils closed they can dive under water and remain submerged for two minutes. ADAPTATION: The polar bear's skin is black to absorb heat, and its long guard hairs are hollow to act as an insulator and for buoyancy. Its sense of smell is acute, able to smell carrion (e.g. a dead whale) up to 20 miles away. When walking, it appears bow-legged and pigeon-toed, both adaptations enable it to maintain balance on slippery ice. In addition, except for the balls of the feet, the soles are covered with hair, making a non-skid tread.
