POLAR BEAR Ursus maritimus Description: Polar bears are the largest bear species, weighing in at between 440 and 1760 pounds with an overall body length of 8' 5".
They have a distinctive all white coat, triangular profile, long neck, and small ears. A polar bear's nose, lips and all skin under their fur is black. Their front paws are very wide for paddling through arctic waters, they use their hind feet as rudders. The soles of their feet are covered with vacuoles that actually act as suction cups while walking (and running) on the ice. Their heavy fur, dense underfur, and thick layer of insulating fat allows them to maintain a normal body temperature when the outside temperature drops to -37 degrees C.
Range: It is found in Greenland, Norway, the former Soviet Union, Canada and Alaska.
Habitat: Polar bears are found in the areas of annual ice that forms around the shorelines of the continents and archipelagoes at the circumpolar Arctic. This area has the highest concentration of food sources available, as compared to more northern latitudes with multiyear ice which is biologically more barren and where polar bears are rarely found. Diet: Polar bears are almost exclusively carnivores, feeding on ringed and bearded seals, young walruses and occasionally a narwhal or beluga. They have been known to eat carrion and may occasionally eat berries or other plant material when available.

Records indicate that Bowdoin fielded a men's varsity cross-country team in the 1930s and early 1940s, ending when World War II forced a halt in intercollegiate competition in 1942. In that fall, however, Joseph Carey '44, won the individual Maine State Championship. Cross country did not return as a varsity sport until the fall of 1955, when Frank Sabasteanski restarted the program. Since then, the men's cross-country team has become one of the most competitive programs in New England. The women's cross-country team at Bowdoin College was instituted in 1976, and gained immediate national respect. The participation of future-Olympic champion Joan Benoit '79, and three-time All-American Jane Petrick '82 established the Polar Bears as one of the premier programs in New England and the country. Under the direction of head coach Peter Slovenski , the teams train on numerous sites among the beautiful Maine landscape, including the Swan Island Nature Reserve, Wolfe's Necke State Park and Popham Beach. Polar bear anatomy is completely adapted to the environment in which it lives. A sturdy body, strong muscular legs, and large neck muscles help it survive. It has very large feet with a small amount of webbing between the toes, which makes it a powerful swimmer. A polar bear can swim 60 miles without pausing to rest. At an average speed of 6 miles per hour, that is 10 hours of constant swimming. It can dive to a depth of 15 feet and stay under for 2 minutes or so. When under water, its nose and ears close up but the eyes stay open to search for prey . It has also been observed jumping 7-8 feet out of the water to catch a seal. The bottom of its paw is covered with dense fur, providing more traction when they are walking on ice. The front legs are very muscular and enable it to break into seal dens or flip seals out of the water. Its stomach capacity is very large and enables it to take advantage of large meals when it can. If necessary, it can go for weeks without food. Its coat color ranges from white to a yellowish white, which

    Arctic Life
    Arctic Wolves:
Arctic wolves generally travel in familial packs of 4 - 7. As a pack they are able to prey on animals much larger than themselves, such as caribou and muskoxen. They usually search out old or very young animals and may wait several days, until their prey is weakened from an earlier attack, before finally moving in for the kill.
    Polar Bears:
A polar bear recently visited the Science Village! But the scientists aren't worried they know that polar bears prefer ringed seals for dinner! These clever hunters (the bears, not the scientists) need lipid-rich foods to protect them against the arctic cold and to sustain them during periods when food is scarce. In fact, polar bears usually eat only the seal's blubber, leaving the rest for scavengers. In the early spring, hungry mother bears emerge from their winter dens and begin to teach their cubs the secrets of the chase. More about polar bears
    Muskoxen:
Muskoxen have provided Inuit with meat, clothing and weapons/tools, as well as spiritual gifts, since prehistoric times. These impressive animals are able to function normally at -40°C because of their amazing coats, which have an insulating woolly layer next to the skin and a coarser hairy layer that covers and protects the wool. Another remarkable feature of the muskox is its magnificent horns, which curve downward toward the face then out and up at the slender tips. The thick base (up to 10 cm) of horn and bone that extends across the bull's forehead is called the "boss". This hard mass is useful in mating contests, when bulls butt heads (ouch!). Cows also have horns, but no "boss". The muskox's horns are its only real defence against its main predator, the wolf.

    Description
Only recently in evolutionary time have bears adapted to life on arctic seas, but these great creatures have mastered the water and ice environment superbly. Over time they evolved a luxuriant white coat and layer of blubber for camouflage and warmth. Oversize feet serve as paddles for extensive swimming and spread their weight, helping this largest of modern carnivores (excepting Orcas ) to traverse ice too thin to support a person.
    Evolution
During the Ice Age, seals adapted to life in icy northern seas. Their need to breathe and reproduce at the surface put a rich year-around food resource within reach of a population of brown bears that began to live more and more out on the ice. Natural selection favored those bears best able to catch seals, and they became more thoroughly carnivorous than other bears. By 100,000 years ago they had evolved into something like the polar bear of today. Although polar and brown bears now look and act rather differently, their genetic closeness is demonstrated by matings in zoos that produce fertile offspring.
