Photo courtsey Roger Birkel, The Baltimore Zoo. Polar Bear Scientific Name: Ursus maritimus Home: All around the North Pole on sea ice, islands, and coasts Description: White-furred, long-legged, huge, one-ton bear Polar bears are the biggest carnivores on land! They're twice as big as a tiger, and the ultimate polar predators. Hunting alone for anything from seals to large fish, or scavenging for dead whale or walrus, the polar bear uses a sense of smell 100 times better than ours. A clever polar bear technique for catching a seal requires long hours by a break in the ice, waiting for the seal to come up for air so he can grab it. Polar bears can run at speeds close to 40 mph . Some polar bears never step on land, though, and move from one ice floe to another. Even though they are amazing swimmers, with water-repellent coats and partially webbed paws, the bears prefer to use chunks of ice as rafts to get around! The cold, windy, and ice-covered terrain of the Arctic is a polar bear paradise! Polar bears hiss like cats when they're mad!

Taking the plunge into the cold Arctic waters at Toledo Zoo.
Polar Bears Swimming

MPG Movie

The Polar Bear is from the Arctic area of the world... very cold! The blubber on his body helps to keep him warm. His white hair color, is actually transparent. The color helps him to blend in with the snow, making him hard to see. The polar bear's skin is dark and draws in the heat from the sun.
The polar bear usually walks hundreds of miles every day... this is one reason why you see them pace while in the zoo. For this reason, some say it is not good to keep the polar bears in captivity. One of the favorite meals of the polar bear is seals (pictured below). They will sit near an air hole, and wait until the seal comes up for air. They have also been seen eating Beluga white whales (pictured below). The polar bear's front paws are webbed, making them strong swimmers. They have been known to swim for 60 miles without stopping to rest. Fall 2003: Go Cubbies!
Totally jumped on the Cubs bandwagon this year. We were all hoping that "this year is the next year we've all been waiting for" since [Tinker to Evers to Chance]! But, alas, it was not meant to be. I was totally obsessed - learned all the players names, positions, strengths, weaknesses, even a few stats. Pretty good for a girl, eh? August 31, 2003: Pictures of Me Here are some pictures of me . (not "pictures of you" - that would be a great melancholy song by the Cure) August 17, 2003: Another Garage Sale Sold $1007.30 worth of (mostly) crap. Sold a black dress to a woman entering a convent, sold a bunch of my nephews' baby clothes to a woman who is sending them to a Native American family out west, got teary-eyed when someone bought Grandpa's hand-made saw horses. Another interesing, but exhausting weekend. (see my entry on the last garage sale July 22, 2003: O'Neill v. MacGyver

Polar Bears: Introduction Social Behavior Name: Ursus maritimus Mass: 250 kg-650 kg
(551 lb-1433 lb) Size: 2.5 to 3 m (8.2-9.8 ft) long Range: Arctic tundra Life Span: 15 to 30 years Status: no special status Polar bears are one of the largest land carnivore. Male polar bears or boars can weigh around 350 to 650 kg (772-1,433 lb.) and are about 2.5 to 3 m (8.2-9.8 ft.) long. Females or sows weigh about 150 to 250 kg (331-551 lb.) and are about 2 to 2.5 m (6.6-8.2 ft.) long. Both males and females have small tails that are about 7 to 12 cm (2.8-4.7 in.) long. Polar bear legs are large and stocky, and compared to other bears; polar bears have long bodies and slender necks. The head is long and relatively small with a long muzzle and a slightly arched snout, which ends in a broad, black nose. Polar bear's have dark brown eyes that are set relatively close together, and have small rounded ears. The hind limbs are longer than the forelimbs, giving the polar bear their formidable stance. Polar bears have large paws, which act like snowshoes, spreading out the bear's weight as it moves over ice and snow. Each foot has five-toes, and each toe ends in a thick, curved, non-retractable claw. They use their claws for grasping prey and for traction when running or climbing on ice.

POLAR BEAR
Ursus maritimus
The polar bear is found throughout the circumpolar Arctic. Polar bears inhabit Arctic sea ice, water, islands, and continental coastlines. Polar bears are among the largest land carnivores. Adult male polar bears, called boars, weigh from 350 to 650 kg (772-1,433 lb.) and are about 2.5 to 3 m (8.2-9.8 ft.) long. Adult female bears, called sows, weigh from 150 to 250 kg (331-551 lb.) and are 2 to 2.5 m (6.6-8.2 ft.) long. Adult polar bears need an average of 2 kg (4.4 lb.) of fat per day to maintain their weight. Their diet includes seals, walruses, whales, fish, and vegetation. Polar bears are strong swimmers, paddling dog-style with their front paws while holding their hind feet and legs flat like rudders. Scientists have tracked polar bears swimming continuously for 100 km (62 mi.). Polar bear cubs are born in a den from November through January. At birth, cubs weigh about 454 to 680 g (16-24 oz.) and are about 30 cm (12 in.) long. They are born helpless with their eyes closed, and appear hairless because of their very fine fur. Cubs open their eyes within the first month, and begin walking at two months. Cubs emerge from the den when they are four to six months old. By eight months, they weigh more than 45 kg (99 lb.). Polar bears at zoological parks provide opportunities for the public to learn about these animals and how human activities may impact their survival. Scientists and specialists study polar bear biology, including polar bear reproduction, birth and care of young, and communication.

The polar bear's white fur helps camouflage it in it's polar environment. They have two layers of fur, a soft under coat and an outer coat of guard hairs. The guard hairs are hollow and help the polar bear float! Male polar bears are larger than females. They can weigh as much as 1,600 pounds. The polar bear has fur on the soles of its feet that helps protect them from the cold and ice and prevents them from sliding on the ice. They also have some webbing between their toes that help them paddle in the water. They have long necks and small heads. Their long neck helps them keep their heads above water when they are swimming.
Polar bears are found around the North Pole. They can be found in Greenland and the far northern areas of North America, Europe and Asia.
Though they sometimes can be found on the tundra, polar bears usually live near the water and often will go on ice flows in the ocean.
The primary food source for polar bears is seals. They also eat fish, seabirds and sometimes reindeer. In the summer, they may also eat berries and other plants. Classification Phylum: Chordata
Class: Mammalia
Order: Carnivora
Family: Ursidae
Genus: Ursus
Polar bears mate every other year in mid-summer. Females will dig a den in the snow and stay their for nine moths until the young are born. They have between one and four cubs. The cubs are hairless and toothless when they are born and are about the size of a chipmunk. The cubs stay with their mother for one to two years.

Each journey's departure is carefully timed to coincide with peak behavior displays that occur only during two to four week periods each year. Our guests have been witness to the astounding mass sardine run of South Africa, the chaos and charm of 100,000 breeding king penguins on South Georgia Sub Antarctica, polar bears teaching their young to hunt, and the awe-inspiring sight of killer whales in Norway "rounding up" schools of herring.
