The flourishing life within the briny habitat of sea ice. The ice specific ecosystem includes bacteria, viruses, unicellular algae, diatom chains, worms and crustaceans. Click on the image to see a magnified view of the brine channels containing these organisms. The flourishing life within the briny habitat of sea ice is intricately linked to physical processes. Temperature controls every physical and chemical aspect of ice, including the availability of light. The most notable effect of decreasing temperature, as winter progresses and the ice solidifies, is the reduction of pore space within the ice, and the concurrent increase in the salinity of the brine. Sea ice serves as habitat for an ice-specific food web ( sympagic foodweb ] that includes bacteria, viruses

Polar bears live along shores and on sea ice in the icy cold Arctic. When sea ice forms over the ocean in cold weather, many polar bears, except pregnant females, head out onto the ice to hunt seals. Polar bears have been spotted on sea ice hundreds of miles from shore. When the warm weather causes the sea ice to melt, polar bears move back toward shore. Sometimes the polar bear stalks its prey. It may see a seal lying near its breathing hole and slowly move toward it, then charge it, biting its head or grabbing it with its massive claws. A polar bear may also hunt by swimming beneath the ice. The U.S., Canada, Denmark, Norway, and the Soviet Union signed an agreement in 1973 to protect polar bears. Each of these countries either banned hunting or established rules for how many polar bears could be hunted within its own boundaries. These rules help keep polar bear populations stable. Today, 25,000 to 40,000 polar bears roam the Arctic.

Walking Bear The polar bear is a mighty hunter of seals. The most carnivorous of the bears, it is also the most patient. They will sit near a seal blow-hole for hours, waiting, until the animal surfaces. When it does, it is all over for the seal. One powerful blow from a forepaw brings a swift meal for the bear and a swifter death for the seal. The conditions of the polar north are harsh, with temperatures well below freezing almost constantly. In order to survive, the polar bear has to be an expert survivalist, able to cope with the grueling conditions of his environment. Like a giant solar panel, the skin of the bear is black to draw every bit of possible heat from the sunlight. The hairs if the pelt appear to be white, but are actually transluscent and transmit the light down to the skin. Below these hairs are "underhairs" of orange or yellow. Like those of other bears, the ears of the polar bear are round. They are, however, smaller and closer to the head. This, along with the overall shape of the animal help to make it a formidable swimmer. The paws are large, and slightly webbed, which also contribute to the bear's abilities as a swimmer. There is a great degree of sexual dimorphism among the bears as well. The males are huge, the heaviest of them weighing as much as 1300 pounds. The females are smaller, the largest of them being only about 600 pounds.

Tel: 202-682-9400
Fax: 202-682-1331 STATUS: Not federally listed as endangered or threatened. The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), Polar Bear Specialist Group lists most populations as "stable." DESCRIPTION: The polar bear rivals the Kodiak bear as the largest four-footed carnivore on Earth and can live up to 25 years. Although the polar bear’s coat appears white, each individual hair is actually a clear hollow tube that channels the sun’s energy directly to the bear’s skin and helps it stay warm. The polar bear’s entire body is furred, even the bottom of its paws. That helps prevent bears from slipping on the ice. The polar bear is classified as a marine mammal. Its feet are partially webbed for swimming, and its fur is water-repellent. A formidable predator, it has extremely sharp claws. SIZE: Males are 8 to 11 feet long and weigh 500 to 1,100 pounds but can reach as much as 1,500 pounds. Females are smaller, measuring 6 to 8 feet long, and weigh from 350 to 600 pounds, occasionally reaching 700 pounds. POPULATION: Worldwide there are thought to be 22,000-27,000 polar bears in 19 separate populations. They can be found in the United States, Canada, Russia, Greenland and on the Arctic islands of Norway. There are estimated to be about 3,000 to 5,000 polar bears in Alaska.

The 339th Infantry Leaves for Russia
Prior to the collapse of Russia in 1917, vast quantities of military supplies had been assembled in the northern part of that country at the ports of Archangel and Murmansk, the latter being an open port north of the Arctic Circle. The Supreme War Council believed that Allied troops should be sent to secure these ports for the use of the Allies and to save the supplies located there. The original objectives also included the establishment a rallying point for Czech troops who were roaming loose in Russia and to prevent the establishment of German submarine bases.

Many of the Polar Bears were from the northern midwest
Consequently an Allied force under British command was dispatched by sea and on August 3, 1918, seized the city of Archangel and drove the Bolshevik troops to the south of that place. The first American troops ashore are fifty sailors from the USS Olympia. The British government had previously urged the United States to contribute a contingent and as a result the War Department directed the Commander-in-Chief of the American Expeditionary Forces to send three battalions of infantry and three companies of engineers to join this Allied venture. The 339th Infantry, 1st Battalion of the 310th Engineers, 337th Field Hospital and 337th Ambulance Company, all of the 85th Division, were designated. They sailed from England, and arrived in Northern Russia on September 4.

Bear With Us
Bear With Us Inc Bears are mammals that are often associated with North America and Russia. There are a number of types of bears: American Black Bear, Asiatic Black, Brown Bear, Polar Bear, Panda Bear, Sloth Bear, Spectacled Bear, and Sun Bear. Each species has its own unique characteristics, although belonging to one family; they all have much in common. Polar bears live on cold Arctic ice. Brown bears inhabit dense forests and mountain regions of the western United States. The American Black Bear is found throughout North America. The Asiatic Black Bear inhabits Southeast Asia. The Spectacled Bear is native to South America. There have been many discussions concerning whether the Panda is a bear or not. At one time the Panda was considered to be more closely related to the raccoon family. Genetic tests proved the Panda's right to belong to the bear family. A bear is a large carnivorous mammal, possessing a heavy body, short tail, and short, rounded ears. A bear has plantigrade feet with five clawed toes. A very powerful animal, the bear has a thick, shaggy fur. Bears have short, strong legs and large feet. Each foot has five toes with long claws.
Bears - Behavior
Bears usually lead a solitary way of life. They do not tend to gather in groups. The mating season is summer. During this season, a male and a female bear may live together for about a month. Bears spend much of the wintertime in a so-called winter sleep. Many scientists describe this period of sleeping as "incomplete hibernation." Bears consume large amounts of food during late summer and store fat within its body for energy needed during the winter sleep.

Bears are fascinating to people. Think of all the ways we have included them in our lives often a child's first toy is a teddy bear, Smokey Bear reminds us to keep our forest safe, bear hugs are thought to be the best, Big Blue Bear is beloved by millions of preschoolers and Pooh bear has movies, a clothing line and decorates more childrens rooms than any other bear. This isn't complete list of how bears are represented in our lives, nor is it a new phenomena, our fascination with bears goes back to man's ancient history and the evidence is in nearly every culture.
Bears, Polar Bear, Grizzly Bear, Black and Brown Bear Zoos report more people flock to see the bears more than nearly any other exhibit. Children and adults alike are in awe of brown bears, grizzly bears, polar bears, Panda bears or any bear! We want bears to be around for thousands of years to come, and this site is dedicated to educating people about bears so we will be able to continue enjoying the fascination. POLAR BEAR
Ursus maritimus
WHO AND WHERE?
Polar Bears can found in all of the polar regions of the entire northern hemisphere. This includes Russia, Norway, Greenland, the United States and Canada. Their preferred habitat is in the area where the northern seas meet the shoreline. It is also the preferred habitat of their favorite prey, the seal. Most Scientist believe that the Polar Bear evolved about 200,000 years ago from brown Bear ancestors. There are many different types of Polar Bears, about 6-7, depending on who you ask. Their differences stem from the fact that the different types grow up in different regions, including central Siberia; Greenland; northern Alaska; western Alaska; and the Hudson Bay. These groupings have developed as a result of separate ice movement patterns. It is estimated that there are currently somewhere between 20,000 and 40,000 Polar Bears.

Polar Bears Introduction Hunting Which animal stands up taller than the largest elephant? It is the Polar Bear, the largest meat-eating land animal in the world. The Polar Bear rules the freezing, ice-packed northern Arctic. It weighs up to 800 kg and is about 2.5 m long. A solitary animal, it fears no one, except possibly an old bull walrus. And none dares to attack it except man. Living on Ice The Polar Bear lives in Arctic seas, along coasts and islands. Polar bears have also been seen hundreds of kilometres inland, but most of their time is spent on ice packs, sometimes far offshore. A good swimmer, the Polar Bear sometimes covers long distances through icy cold waters. A Polar Bear is well geared to life on the ice floes. Its five long, curved claws on each hairy foot give it a firm grip on the slippery ice while its broad feet help it to swim superbly. The Polar Bear has a thick, well-insulated fur coat and a layer of fat which protects its body from the intense Arctic cold. Only the nose and pads of the feet are exposed. The Polar Bear's white fur coat camouflages it against the snow, allowing it to sneak up on basking seals.
