Bamboo Bears
A baby's arrival is always a big event. But rarely is a newborn greeted by international headlines and a world eager to follow every twitch of its four-ounce, fist-sized body.
Hua Mei's birth made international headlines. On August 21, 1999, however, animal lovers the world over rejoiced as Hua Mei became one of just a handful of baby giant pandas ever to be born in captivity. This week, NATURE's THE PANDA BABY tells the inspiring story of this pint-sized arrival the product of years of focused and often frustrating work by scientists and conservationists in China and at the World-Famous San Diego Zoo in California.
Native to the misty bamboo forests of central China, giant pandas are among the best known and most endangered animals in the world. Scientists have named them Ailuropoda melanoleuca, meaning "black and white cat-footed animal." In China, they are known as Daxiongmao, which means "large bear cat."
But conservationists estimate that only about 1,000 of the big black and white bamboo-eating bears remain in the wild in China, where they are threatened by habitat loss and hunting. Another 140 live in breeding facilities and zoos, with about 20 of those captive bears living outside their homeland. In the United States, just three zoos in Atlanta, San Diego, and Washington, D.C. shelter pandas. The animals are precious, with the zoos paying up to $1 million a year to the Chinese government for the privilege of "borrowing" the animals for display and study.

APPEARANCE The sharply contrasting black and white coloration, added to the stocky characteristic shape of a bear, makes the giant panda one of the most recognizable animals in the world. The head, top of the neck and rump are white, whi le small patches of fur around the eyes, the ears, shoulders, front legs, and rear legs are black. When compared with other bears, the head of the giant panda is large in relation to its body. The front paw has six digits as a result of the radial sesamoid, the wrist bone, becoming extended to form an awkward, but functional, opposable thumb. The male genitalia are small and pointed to the rear, w hich is more similar to the red panda (Ailurus fulgens)than to other bears.
SIZE Adult giant pandas range in body length from about 160 to 190 centimeters (64 to 76 inches). Males are slightly longer than females, have stronger forelegs, and are 10 to 20 percent heavier. In the wild males weigh from 85 to 125 kilograms (190 to 275 pounds), while females range between 70 and 100 kilograms (155 to 220 pounds). At birth, cubs weigh only 85 to 140 grams (3 to 5 ounces).
HABITAT Giant pandas live at an altitude of between 1,200 and 3,500 meters (4,000 and 11,500 feet) in mountain forests that are characterized by dense stands of bamboo. Home ranges average 8.5 square kilometers (3.3 square miles) for ma les and 4.6 square kilometers (1.8 square miles) for females.

Description:
Giant pandas are an endangered species. They are often called pandas or panda bears, although their scientific name is Ailurpoda Melanoleuca. The giant panda is a large mammal weighing between 165-353 pounds. Its body length is between 4-5 feet including a tail that is five inches long. Their vision is poor but their sense of smell is excellent. They have a woolly black and white coat, which is slightly oily to prevent water penetration. Giant pandas are a very beautiful animal. This is why we have to so everything we can to save them. If panda breeding habits can be perfected maybe the giant pandas will not become extinct.
Environment:
Problems:
There are a few reasons why the giant panda is endangered. One reason is that the panda breeding season takes place only from March to May. This makes it harder to breed a lot of pandas and increase the panda population. A second reason that pandas are endangered is because of where they live in the wild. Giant pandas are restricted to certain areas of China, their habitat, so that means that there is not enough space for all the pandas to live in.

The Topic:
Bears
Easier - A bear is a large, heavy and powerful animal with thick, shaggy fur and very short tail. Bears are omnivorous. They may eat plants, honey, insects, fish, and small animals. There are several kinds of bears, such as a brown bear, black bear, polar bear, and a grizzly bear. Harder Bears live alone; they never gather in groups except during the summer mating season when a pair may be together for a month. The solitary female gives birth to one to four cubs during the winter sleep period. Cubs grow rapidly but remain with their mother for one or two years. Bears often spend much of their winter sleeping, a state that some call hibernation. Other scientists maintain that bears do not truly hibernate because their body temperature does not drop greatly and some become active on mild days. Zoologists usually recognize eight species of bears with several subspecies or varieties. The main types are brown bears, American black bears, Asiatic black bears, panda bears, polar bears, sun bears, sloth bears, and spectacled bears. Until recently, some zoologists maintained that pandas were part of the raccoon family or belonged to their own mammal family. However, genetic testing now indicates that pandas are indeed bears.

Famous for their love of bamboo, little else is known about their behaviour in the wild, and their breeding success in captivity is poor. Life span 25-30 years. Statistics Body length: 160-190cm, Weight: male: 85-125kg, female: 70-100kg. Physical Description They are white with black eye patches and black ears, legs, feet, chest and shoulders. The fur is dense to protect the panda from the cold and damp climate in which they live. They are heavy-bodied with a large head and rounded ears. Distribution Giant pandas live in south western China. They have the most restricted distribution of all bears. Habitat They are limited to bamboo thickets in mountainous regions between altitudes of 1200 and 3500m. Diet Ninety nine per cent of a panda's diet is made up of 30 species of bamboo. The remaining one per cent is made up of other plants and meat. Their digestion of bamboo is very inefficient; pandas only digest about 20 per cent of the dry matter of bamboo, whereas most herbivores assimilate about 80 per cent. This means that they must eat large amounts to obtain their energy requirements. They can eat between 12 and 38kg of bamboo shoots, leaves and stems per 24 hour period.

Things to Know The giant panda is a bear. There is much discussion about whether they are bears, raccoons or their own species. They share some features of bears and some of raccoons. The giant panda does not hibernate during the winter. Due to their leaner diets, they do not build up the excess fat needed to hibernate. They also live in a habitat zone where food is available on all year round. The panda is classified as a bear. Giant pandas are classified as carnivores (meat-eating mammals). While bamboo represents 99% of their diet they have also been known to eat fish, pikas, rodents, vines, irises, crocus, mushrooms and rice grass. The panda assumes a sitting position to eat. Their unique forepaws have an enlarged wristbone that they can flex like a thumb. This allows them to direct bamboo stalks to their mouths where they strip off bites with their incisor teeth. About 12 hours each day are spent feeding and they consume 12-15% of their body weight each day. They drink water usually just once a day.

Welcome to Absolute Pandas Giant pandas are found only in the mountains of central China-in small isolated areas of the north and central portions of the Sichuan Province, in the mountains bordering the southernmost part of Gansu Province, and tin the Qinling Mountains of the Shaanxi Province. Giant pandas live in dense bamboo and coniferous forests at altitudes of 5,000 to 10,000 feet. The mountains are shrouded in heavy clouds with torrential rains or dense mist throughout the year. Ancestors of the giant panda existed in the mid-Miocene Era (about 3 million years ago), when their geographic range extended throughout southern China. Fossil remains also have been found in present-day Burma and Vietnam. Giant pandas are bear-like in shape with striking black and white markings. The ears, eye patches, legs, and shoulder band are black; the rest of the body is whitish. They have a thick, woolly coat to insulate them from the cold. Adults are 4 to 6 feet long and may weigh up to 350 pounds-about the same size as the American black bear. However, unlike the black bear, giant pandas to not hibernate and cannot walk on their hind legs. The giant panda has unique front paws-one of the wrist bones is enlarged and elongated and is used like a thumb, enabling the giant panda to grasp stalks of bamboo. They also have very powerful jaws and teeth to rush bamboo. While bamboo stalks and roots make up and 95 percent of its diet, the giant panda also feeds on gentians, irises, crocuses, fish and occasionally small rodents. It must eat 20 to 40 pounds of food each day to survive, and spends 20 to 16 hours a day feeding.

There are many species of bamboo. Only a few of these grow at the high altitudes where pandas live today. A panda should have at least two bamboo species where it lives, or it will starve.
