Cloned cow bears calf in Japan July 10, 2000 - Associated Press A cloned cow gave birth to a calf conceived by artificial insemination at a research center in northwestern Japan on Monday, showing that cloned cows can reproduce. The newborn, a female weighing 58.3 pounds, is the world's first reported example of a calf being born to a cloned cow, said Koichi Yamamoto, deputy director of the Ishikawa Prefectural Center for Animal Husbandry and Research, 190 miles northwest of Tokyo. "This is very significant in showing a cloned cow can give birth and shows maternal instincts," Yamamoto said. He said the newborn calf, which still doesn't have a name, is healthy and suckling from its mother. The center in Japan has succeeded in creating five clones, using cells around a cow's ovary. All five clones underwent artificial insemination, and so far two of them have gotten pregnant. One of them - Kaga No. 2, born in 1998 - gave birth Monday. Another, called Nodo No. 2, is expected to give birth in September, Yamamoto said. He said the new calf isn't a clone but a half-clone.

Despite previous industry claims that the commonly used chemical deca-BDE does not build up in humans and wildlife, Norwegian scientists have found the chemical in polar bears and gulls on the remote Arctic archipelago of Spitsbergen.

12, May 2004 Stranded polar bears may be early warning sign of climate change The plight of a female polar bear and her two cubs stranded on a remote arctic island may be an early warning about the possible impact of climate change, said WWF today. Read more... WWF in the Arctic The Arctic is the largest and least fragmented of the inhabited regions on earth: a vast area of ice and snow, jagged peaks and frozen seas, glaciers and icebergs, fjords and tundra. It's the realm of the polar bear and ringed seal, caribou and arctic fox, beluga whale and narwhal, sea eagle and snowy owl. And home to indigenous peoples, who have adapted to live in one of the harshest environments in the world. But the Arctic is under threat. From over-fishing, climate change, toxic pollution, oil and gas exploration and production, and even corroding nuclear arsenals.

Bamboo is the favorite food of Giant Panda bears. It is grown all over the Panda's habitat. But it also can and is grown in many other parts of the world. In th U.S., many varieties have been imported and flourish in home gardens. They are popular in home gardens where Japanese or asian setting are desired. For others, they just like the challenge of growing something different. Bamboo can be grown in most climates. It also requires little care and attention, thriving and spreading profusely through it's root system . It is strongly recommended that gardeners create a barrier two to three feet deep around the planting area to contain the spread of the roots to areas beyond where the plants are desired. Not only is bamboo grown as an ornamental plant, but the shoots are edible. If you eat a variety of chinese food, chances are you have eaten bamboo. Like rice, it has little flavor of it's own and takes on the flavor of the food it is cooked with. While nutritional value is low, it is a good source of fiber. Low nutritional value is one reason Giant Pandas need to eat so much of it. Bamboo shoots command a fairly high market price so it can make a good cash crop.

All About Pandas
The Giant Panda Ailuropoda melanoleuca
Panda Information Coloring Printout Labeled Coloring Printout Unlabeled ... on the Web Pandas Giant pandas are black-and-white Chinese bears that are on the verge of extinction. These large, cuddly-looking mammals have a big head, a heavy body, rounded ears, and a short tail. The Chinese people call the panda "Da xiong mao," which means "giant bear cat" in Chinese. The panda is a symbol of peace in China. This bear is quite different from other bears. It has unusual cat-like eyes, and its front paws have an opposable "thumb." Female pandas are called sows, males are called boars, and the young are called cubs. EYES Most bears' eyes have round pupils. The exception is the giant panda, whose pupils are vertical slits, like cats' eyes. These unusual eyes inspired the Chinese to call the panda the "giant cat bear."

The Giant Panda bear is from China. The primary food source is bamboo. Due to the population growth and more land being cultivated for crops, the bamboo is becoming harder for the Panda to find. It is believed that there are fewer than 1000 Pandas in the wild. Research is underway to save the Panda from extinction.
The Panda is one of the most recognized animals due to it's cute round body shape and black and white color. The Panda bear has a enlarged wrist bone which acts like a false thumb. This helps the Panda to hold onto thier food. As you can see by the photo to the right, it works perfect for holding bamboo.

Some bears may not hibernate in the true sense, but will become less active during this time, usually during the winter months. It is not known if all bears hibernate in the wild. Many scientists classify the Giant panda as a raccoon, rather than a bear. The panda s forepaw is different from the other bears.

The first pandas
The giant panda itself appeared suddenly during the late Pliocene or early
Pleistocene, perhaps no more than two to three million years ago. Panda
fossils have been found in Burma, Vietnam, and particularly in early in
eastern China, as far north as Beijing.
In the second century AD the giant panda was a rare and semi-divine animals
inside China. In the Han dynasty (206 BC-AC 24) the emperor's garden in the
then capital Xian held nearly 40 rare animal specials, of which the panda
was the most highly treasured, and the poet Bai Juyi (AD 772-846) credited
the panda with the power to prevent disease and exorcise evil spirits. Panda
skins appear scattered throughout the Chinese imperial records, as gifts or tribute on great occasions of states. But the animal was totally unknown outside the secretive "Middle Kingdom" until the declining Qing Dynasty was slowly forced to open its doors to trade and Christianity towards the end of the nineteenth century.

Bears - Physical Description
Bear With Us
Bear With Us Inc Bears are mammals that are often associated with North America and Russia. There are a number of types of bears: American Black Bear, Asiatic Black, Brown Bear, Polar Bear, Panda Bear, Sloth Bear, Spectacled Bear, and Sun Bear. Each species has its own unique characteristics, although belonging to one family; they all have much in common. Polar bears live on cold Arctic ice. Brown bears inhabit dense forests and mountain regions of the western United States. The American Black Bear is found throughout North America. The Asiatic Black Bear inhabits Southeast Asia. The Spectacled Bear is native to South America. There have been many discussions concerning whether the Panda is a bear or not. At one time the Panda was considered to be more closely related to the raccoon family. Genetic tests proved the Panda's right to belong to the bear family. A bear is a large carnivorous mammal, possessing a heavy body, short tail, and short, rounded ears. A bear has plantigrade feet with five clawed toes. A very powerful animal, the bear has a thick, shaggy fur. Bears have short, strong legs and large feet. Each foot has five toes with long claws.
Bears - Behavior
Bears usually lead a solitary way of life. They do not tend to gather in groups. The mating season is summer. During this season, a male and a female bear may live together for about a month. Bears spend much of the wintertime in a so-called winter sleep. Many scientists describe this period of sleeping as "incomplete hibernation." Bears consume large amounts of food during late summer and store fat within its body for energy needed during the winter sleep.
