Koala, common name for an arboreal marsupial animal, Phascolarctos cinereus, the only member of the family Phascolarctidae. In appearance the animal somewhat resembles the toy teddy bear; in habits it somewhat resembles a sloth. The koala reaches a maximum length of about 76 cm (about 2.5 ft) and has a maximum life span of about 20 years. It has a large, round head with large, round, furry ears and a stout body covered with thick ashy-gray fur. The animal has a vestigial tail. Its legs are short; its feet are large, and each has five toes, two of which are opposable to the other three. Each toe bears a strong claw. The female bears one young at a time. The young koala is then kept in the marsupial pouch for about six months, after which time the female carries it upon her back until it is half grown. Koalas are found only in eucalyptus forests of eastern Australia. The animals frequent high eucalyptus trees, feeding only on the leaves and flowers of certain species of eucalyptus. The animal is lethargic and often remains in the same tree for days. The males are more active than the females and feed during the day; the females sleep all day and feed at night. Koalas sleep curled up on the limbs of trees, firmly grasping the limbs with their feet. The animal does not relax its hold even when it is mortally wounded by gunfire. Koalas were formerly killed for their soft, thick fur, sold in the United States as wombat fur; they are now protected by laws in Australia. They are so sedentary that they will not run off, even when kept in unfenced eucalyptus regions, as they are in several Australian parks.

The koala belongs to a special group of Australian mammals, called marsupials. Sometimes people call them koala bears but the koala is not a bear.

Koalas Koalas are furry. They are not bears! They only eat leaves of eucalyptus trees. They hardly ever drink water. A baby stays in its mother's pouch for a few months after it is born. The koala belongs to a special group of Australian mammals, called marsupials Sometimes people call them 'koala bears' but the koala is not a bear. Marsupials are mammals with a pouch. The female carries her baby in the pouch for 6 or 7 months after it is born. The baby, called a joey, feeds on its mother's milk inside the pouch. After it leaves the pouch, the baby travels around on its mother's back. Koalas have soft, thick, grey or brown fur on their backs. The fur on the stomach is white. Koalas have large, hairless noses and round ears. Koalas don't have tails. Adult koalas measure between 64 to 76 centimetres in length and weigh between 7 and 14 kilograms. Koalas eat the leaves and young shoots of some kinds of eucalyptus trees. They spend nearly all their time in the trees using their sharp, curved claws and long toes to climb about and to hold on to the tree branches. Koalas sleep most of the day and feed and move from tree to tree mainly at night. Koalas don't often drink water, they get moisture from eucalyptus leaves.

There actually wasn't any glass, but out of frame there were scores of Australian zoo keepers and policemen to prevent me from rushing the koalas. BEAR CROSSING WINE Angoves Web Site Bear Crossing Wines hit the spot. Angove's of South Australia launched a range of wines labelled 'Bear Crossing' in support of the AKF in April this year and already royalties from sales have contributed $100,000 to koala conservation. We are absolutely delighted with the support of Angove’s and the verve with which wine lovers around the world have responded to the 'Bear Crossing' brand and its support of wild koalas and their trees. Tim Boydell, General Manager of Angove's is extremely enthusiastic about 'Bear Crossing' wines. “The wines (a Cabernet Merlot and a Chardonnay) are excellent drinking and the price represents outstanding value. This support from Angove's has no time limit. A percentage of every bottle sold in the world of 'Bear Crossing' will be set aside to support the Koala as long as there is a ‘Bear Crossing’ brand” Mr Boydell said. The significance of Angove's sponsorship goes beyond the funding because it shows acknowedgement from mainstream business that the koala is in trouble, and a commercial responsibility to do something about it. The fact that the wines are named ‘Bear Crossing’ has raised eyebrows because as all our supporters know, koalas are not bears they are marsupials. This is explained on the

Is the koala a bear? Despite being called 'koala bears' for many years, koalas are actually marsupials. Bears give birth to well-developed young. Newborn koalas, however, are tiny enough to fit on your thumbnail. They are raised in their mother's pouch. Where do they live? Koalas are found between south-eastern South Australia and Queensland, but only where enough suitable trees have been left. The largest koalas weigh over 10 kilograms and are found in Victoria, while the smallest live in North Queensland and weigh only 5.5 kilograms. Koalas live for between 10 and 20 years. How do they get about? With huge claws and strong muscles, koalas are able to hold on tightly to trees. They have two thumbs and three fingers on each front paw, which makes their grip more even on each side of a branch. They also have a clawless big toe on their hind legs, which allows them to grip with their hind feet as well. Two of their hind toes joined together form a handy two-toothed comb, used for grooming fur and removing ticks. What do they eat?

Koalas are tree-dwelling, marsupial animals that live only in eastern Australian eucalyptus forests. Koalas thrive on eucalyptus leaves, box leaves, and mistletoe, and may not leave their treetop dwellings for days at a time. Eucalyptus leaves are poisonious to most mammals, but not koalas. They eat 2-2 1/2 pounds of food a day. They spend 20% of their time eating and 80% of their time sleeping. Koalas are the most loved marsupial mammal. Formerly hunted for their soft fur, they are now protected by law. Koala, common name for arboreal marsupial animal that in appearance somewhat resembles the toy teddy bear, and in habits somewhat resembles a sloth. The koala reaches a length of 60 to 85 cm (24 to 33 in) and has a maximum life span of 13 to 18 years. It has a large, round head with large, round, furry ears and a stout body covered with thick ashy-gray fur. The animal has a vestigial tail. The young koala is then kept in the marsupial pouch for about six months, after which time the female carries it upon her back until it is half grown. Did you know that the baby koalas are called joeys? Well they are. The mother will have 1 young every 2 years. Twins are rare. On Kangaroo Island, off the coast of South Australia, koalas and their habitat are under threat. Eighteen Koalas were originally introduced to the island in the 1920,s. The colony has now swelled to the five thousand mark and they are literally eating themselves out of house and home. In stark contrast the koalas of Queensland and New South Wales are fast dwindling in numbers due to disease and loss of habitat caused by humans.

Koalas only feast on Eucalypt trees and their favorites, swamp and manna gums, are showing severe signs of over grazing on the island. Current strategy to save the habitat - and the koalas themselves - is a sterilization scheme - The teddy bear is sometimes questioned with a possible relationship to the Australian Koala "bear." The origin of the teddy bear is somewhat in dispute. Most believe the teddy bear was contemporaneously created in both Germany and the United States. That's not so hard to believe (for two guys in different parts of the world took gasoline engines and turned carriages into automobiles). So, why not teddy bears? Well, it probably did happen that way. The official year is agreed upon: 1903. The Leipzig Toy Fair of Germany was the place 3,000 of the friendly little bruins were first ordered for the U.S. market. This is where the Illinois Central Railroad enters the picture. The Illinois Central was, once, briefly, the longest railroad in the world at approximately 700 miles. It was built from the southern part of Illinois northward through the center of the state. The destination was Galena in the far northwest - home to lead and zinc mines. Chicago was a secondary branch line back then. The Teddy Bear is named for President Theodore Roosevelt, and, the ICRR was indirectly involved. Here is how it happened: The President of the ICRR invited President Roosevelt to Mississippi for a bear hunting adventure. (By that time the IC had reached the port of New Orleans.) After hunting for three days and finding no bears, his hosts were concerned that the President’s bear hunt would be unsuccessful. Someone turned up with an old bear (some suggest it was a cub) chained it to a tree, and invited President Roosevelt to shoot it, thus he could say he had "bagged a bear." Admirably, the President refused. This story reached the Washington Post newspaper, and a cartoonist depicted the incident calling it "Drawing the Line at Mississippi." The story spread throughout the nation. Thus, a bear became President Theodore Roosevelt’s symbol.

Koala Bears and Tuna Fish
The koala (picture) is often called a koala bear. Of course it is not a bear, but a marsupial. It is much more closely related to a kangaroo than to a bear. So we should be calling it a koala; forget the "bear." Similarly, the panda is also called a panda bear. The panda is rather closely related to bears, but it is not a bear. I began thinking about misnomers like these lately, when I saw a pronghorn antelope (see the picture), which is not really an antelope at all, but is technically a deer. But its real name is pronghorn antelope, not pronghorn deer. Similarly, a guinea pig is not a pig, but that is its name. Bison are not buffalo, as they are often called (See Buffalo Bisons ). And the extinct Irish elk was neither Irish nor an elk. An aardvark is not a vark (aardvark is Dutch for "earth pig"). The platypus is often called the duckbill platypus, although its bill is not very much like a duck's bill. By now, everyone should recognize the name platypus without the word "duckbill" on the front. The flying fox is a huge bat. A tuna really is a fish. So it is not incorrect to call it (and its meat) tuna fish; it is just redundant. But crayfish, silver fish, cuttle fish, star fish, and any number of shell fish are not fish. Of course the sea horse is not a horse, it's a ... What the heck is a sea horse? It's a fish. The sea lion is not a lion. And the sea cucumber and sea anemone are animals, not plants.

Koalas Koalas Koalas look so much like living teddy bears that many people call them koala bears. But koalas are not bears at all. They are members of an unusual group of mammals called marsupials. Like all marsupials, koalas have pouches they use for carrying their babies. And the only thing cuter than a fuzzy, friendly- looking koala is a sleepy koala baby peering out of its mother's pouch. How they hunt. The only thing a koala will hunt is its favorite eucalyptus tree. When it has found a suitable tree, the koala is not likely to climb down to the ground again until the leaf supply is diminished or it decides to take a drink from a stream. Koalas are very awkward on the ground, but can be as fast as a rabbit. What they eat.

During this period in history, Australia began to drift slowly northward, gradually separating from the Antarctic land mass. Fossil remains of koala-like animals have been found dating back as far as 25 million years ago. As the climate changed and Australia became drier, vegetation adapted until eucalyptus, or gum trees, evolved. As the gum trees became more and more abundant, koalas became dependent on them for food and evolved special features that enable them to cope with this high fibre, low protein diet. Aborigines are thought to have arrived in Australia around 60,000 years ago. Koalas were a readily available food source for the Aboriginies, but they were able to maintain fairly stable populations until the arrival of European settlers (Australian Koala Foundation) (Koala Express)
