Information on koala bears, their life and characteristics and all about their fight for survival in the modern world.
Many people love the cute koala bear. This animal has been made into stuffed toys all over the world. But it is rare to see this creature alive and moving, because its gradually becoming extinct. This article will give an overview of the koala bear, its living habits and the current war against its extinction. The koala, like the kangaroo, is actually a marsupial. It contains a small pouch for its young, like the kangaroo. For this reason, the koala is not related to true bears. In appearance, it is a combination of a monkey and a kangaroo. Koalas are native to Australia, although they are now chiefly found in New South Wales and Queensland. They are highly protected animals, because their number has greatly diminished in the last ten years. The koala has been hunted since the middle of this century for fur and food, which has moved it from its normal habitats. Today, anyone fund harming a koala is severely punished by the law. bodyOffer(32782) Koalas get their endearing appearance from a covering of gray fur and little tufts of white hair on the sides of their faces. Their eyes are small and black, set in their head. They have large ears and curved noses, but no tail. They use their arms and paws to climb through the trees. Koalas have interesting living habits. They are nocturnal, which means that they move around chiefly at night. Koalas do not stay on the ground. They move from tree to tree, carefully lowering and raising themselves by their paws. Koalas eat only the leaves of the eucalyptus, which is another reason that they are now becoming extinct. The eucalyptus tree is disappearing from their natural habitats, fighting a battle against extinction all its own. Koalas have a surprisingly long life span, which can range from 9 to 20 years, in rare cases.

Koala Bear CLICK image for a video story on the koala (By David McCormick In the trees of eastern Australia lives one of the most lovable of the continent's unique animals - the koala bear. Koalas, with their broad face, big, round nose and fluffy ears, are favourites of the plush toy industry - many teddy bears are modelled after the furry animals. But the "bears" actually aren't bears at all - they are marsupials. The koala's pouch is unique from that of other tree-dwelling marsupials because it opens at the rear. Female koalas have only one baby at a time, and the offspring spends up to seven months in the pouch. After that, it clings to its mother's back until it's about one year old. Koalas have short legs and large feet. Each foot has five toes, two of which are opposable to the other three. This allows koalas to cling tightly to tree branches, which is where they spend virtually all of their time. Even when asleep, koalas curl up on tree limbs, firmly grasping the branch with their feet. Koalas, which grow to between 65 and 80 centimetres long and have an average life span of 13 to 18 years, eat only the leaves of eucalyptus trees. And once they find a tree they like, they'll often spend days there.

It has a compact body, large head and nose, large and furry ears, powerful limbs, and no significant tail. Mature koalas weigh from 4-15 kilograms (10-35 pounds), with larger animals in southern Australia. Related Resources Koala Pictures Animals Index The koala is a marsupial, more closely related to kangaroos and possums than to true bears and other placental mammals. Koalas carry their young in a pouch for about 6 months. They occur in the forests and woodlands of central and eastern Queensland, eastern New South Wales, Victoria, and southeastern South Australia. Beloved worldwide because of its cuddly appearance, the koala was first put at risk due to intensive hunting for its fur. By the 1930s, in response to global protests, Australia took steps to prohibit direct killing. Conservation programs by Australian government agencies have since contributed to the species' recovery in some areas with populations estimated to range from 40,000 to 400,000. Today, however, human encroachment and ensuing changes in the koala's habitat, are responsible for population declines.

Southern koalas are 30% larger than the Northern koalas Koala's fur is thick soft and pleasant to touch. Ears have long white hairs on the tips. Koalas can live as long as 17 years, however males life expectancy is less than 10 years (due to injuries during fights, dogs and cars). Females generally live longer. Koalas living in an undisturbed habitat would have a greater life expectancy than those living in suburbia. Koalas prefer to move around just after sunset spending daytimes asleep in the fork of a tree. Koala spends sleeping 75% of its time. Just after sunset koalas move around and can often be heard "barking" aggressively at other koalas.

Actually, a Koala isn't a bear, it's a marsupial (but most people call it a Koala bear)! If you want to skip the story and just get to the craft, scroll about half way down this web page. (But the story's cute and rather educational!)
    STORY:
My daughter went to the zoo to visit the Koala bears with her daycare class the other week. The Koala bears are visiting from another zoo, so the kids made a special trip to see them. When she came home that night she asked Daddy and I if we knew what baby koala bears eat. Being "oh so wise" parents, we decided to amaze her with our vast knowledge of the world and simultaneously answered "Eucalyptus leaves!". Tasha smiled her, infamous "gotcha" smile and said "Nope, they eat poop." Quite convinced that she had somehow horribly misunderstood someone at the zoo, we smiled our "condescending parents" smile and replied that we were quite sure she was mistaken but that we'd ask her daycare instructor the next day to clarify things for us.
