Grizzly Heart:
Living Without Fear Among the Brown Bears of Kamchatka
by Charles Russell and Maureen Enns
With very generous assistance from Fred Stenson
ABOUT THIS BOOK
An absorbing first-hand account of living with bears, from the acclaimed author of The Spirit Bear. To many people, grizzlies are symbols of power and ferocity creatures to be feared and, too often, killed. But Charlie Russell, who has had a forty-year relationship with bears, holds the controversial belief that it is possible to live with and truly understand bears in the wild. And for five years now, Russell and his partner, artist and photographer Maureen Enns, have spent summers on the Kamchatka peninsula, located on the northeast coast of Russia, and home of the densest population of brown bears in the world.
Grizzly Heart tells the remarkable story of how Russell and Enns have defied the preconceptions of wildlife officials and the general public by living unthreatened and respected - among the grizzlies of Kamchatka. In an honest and immediate style, Russell tells of the trials and successes of their years in the field, from convincing Russian officials to allow them to study, to adopting three bear cubs left orphaned when their mother was killed by a hunter (and teaching these cubs how to survive in the wild), to raising environmental awareness through art.

63. Alaska Big Game Hunting - Guided And Unguided Hunts
Offers guided and unguided hunts for back pack sheep, grizzly and brown bears. Located in Chugiak.

About Us
GuidedHunts Outfitted Hunts Unguided Hunts ... E-Mail
W elcome to Alaska Game hunting. We hunt all species of Alaskan big game animals, including back pack sheep hunts, interior grizzly bears and coastal brown bears. Dall sheep and interior bears are hunted in Unit 13. Brown bears, moose and caribou are hunted in units 9 or 17. The key to a successful Alaskan hunt is careful and thorough planning and preparation. Hunting in Alaska is a very different experience than hunting in any other state. The mystique of Alaskan hunting is well earned. The country is vast; the wilderness remote; and the game animals magnificent. Animals such as the barren-ground caribou, sheep, brown bears, black bears and Alaskan moose provide many hunters with a once-in-a-lifetime experience. However, these uniquely Alaskan animals are not found in every part of the state. Even when they are abundant by Alaska standards, their population densities can be low compared to population densities of deer or elk in other states. The fall of 2002 was a very good hunting season for us. The caribou were very scattered for most of the season, however, our hunters were 100% successful on caribou and we hauled some very nice antlers. Our hunters were 65% successful on drop off moose hunts & 100% on fully guided moose hunts, with the smallest moose at 65" and the largest was 72".

Bering Land Bridge National Preserve. grizzly bears. (Ursus arctos). grizzly bears are also called brown bears, and are found throughout the Preserve.

Grizzly Bears
Ursus arctos
Grizzly bears are also called brown bears, and are found throughout the Preserve. Bears on the Seward Peninsula are not the largest members of this species, but 500 pound (230 kg.) bears can be seen here on occasion. Brown bears are most common in the mountains north of Nome and the population in the Preserve is fairly small. There are no black bears in or near the Preserve. Bears are actively hunted throughout the region and tend to be shy around people. Most visitors to the region will never see a bear. Grizzlies are omnivorous. Their diet varies by the season and includes grasses, roots, berries, nuts, insects, fish, rodents, and sometimes small and large mammals. Brown bears on the Seward Peninsula don't depend a lot on salmon like they do in other areas of the state because salmon runs here are often small and salmon streams are few. Brown bears can conceal themselves remarkably well in the low brush along hill sides. Although they will normally not attack a human, they will defend their young or their food if approached too closely. They have an excellent sense of smell, good hearing, and are extremely powerful. They are naturally curious, and caution should be taken when in their presence. Visitors planning to hike, birdwatch, or travel across country should get information on traveling though bear country before starting. Try not to surprise bears. Make noise - talk loud, use bells, or shake stones in a can to announce your presence. If you meet a bear, yield the right-of-way by moving slowly away.

66. National Park Service: Bears In The Columbia Cascades
Thoughts on grizzly and Black bears. Black bears and grizzly bears can be difficult to tell apart. Black bears and grizzly bears have many things in common.
http://www.nps.gov/ccso/bears.htm
Columbia Cascades
Most natural areas in the Pacific Northwest are inhabited by black bears. The northern Cascade Range is also home to a sparse population of grizzly bears. Although unlikely, you may encounter bears in several of the national parks in the Northwest. Most bears tend to avoid people. In most cases, if you give a bear the opportunity to do the right thing, it will. Take the precautions described to help ensure that your visit to this wild and beautiful area is safe and enjoyable. These precautions will also help achieve a fundamental goal of the National Park Service: To keep the wildlife in the national parks wild and neither attracted to nor dependant on people. Bears are curious, intelligent and potentially dangerous animals, but undue fear of bears can endanger both bears and people. Many bears are killed each year by people who are afraid of them. Respecting bears and learning proper behavior in their territory will help so that if you encounter a bear, neither of you will suffer from the experience. When visiting any of the national parks, remember that for a little while you are sharing a place which is home to bears. Both need your understanding and protection. Most people who see a bear in the wild consider it the highlight of their trip. The presense of these majestic creatures is a reminder of how priviledged we are to share some of the country's dwindling wilderness. You can do your part and also reduce your risk by taking the measures described in this page.

The grizzly bear is also known as the brown bear. It has fur that ranges from a cream or silver color to an almost black color. Some grizzly bear's fur is tipped in a lighter color than the rest of its fur. This gives the fur a grizzled look and is how the bear got its name. The grizzly bear has a slight hump above its shoulder and can weigh between 350-1500 pounds.
The grizzly bear's range circles the arctic. It can be found from the Arctic coast down into the central parts of Europe and Asia. In North America, it can be found in Alaska and western Canada. The grizzly was once common west of the Mississippi but its population dropped as the west was settled. There are still some populations in scattered areas of the west.
The grizzly bear lives along rivers and coastal areas, mountain meadows, and in the tundra. In parts of Europe and Asia, the grizzly can be found in forests and mountain woodlands.
The grizzly bear is omnivorous. It eats berries, roots, fungi, grasses, fish, carrion, small mammals, and insects. It is very good at catching fish and it often uses its long claws to dig insects out of rotting logs and small mammals out of their burrows. Some grizzly bears in the Canadian Rockies hunt larger animals like moose, elk and goats. Classification Phylum: Chordata
Class: Mammalia
Order: Carnivora
Family: Ursidae
Genus: Ursinae
Mating season runs from May to early July. It takes from 180-266 days for cubs to be born. Cubs are usually born between January and March. The female usually has two cubs. The cubs are blind and furless and weigh a pound when they are born. The cubs are weaned when they are about five months old, but they usually remain with their mother for two to three years. Grizzly bear cubs can climb trees until they are about a year old.

In North America, there is a lot of confusion about the differences between brown bears, grizzlies and Kodiak bears. They are all Ursus arctos , but there are 2 recognized subspecies,
  • Grizzly bear ( Ursus arctos horribilis
  • Kodiak brown bear ( Ursus arctos middendorfi
In general the coastal bears are brown bears, the interior bears are grizzlies and the Kodiaks live only on Kodiak Island. Coloration varies greatly, from black to the famous blondes of Denali Park. Around the world, the illegal hunting of bears (" poaching ") is big business. Various parts of the bear such as the gall bladder and paws are extremely valuable on the Asian black market. An international agreement known as CITES (the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora) has placed most populations of brown bears on a list known as Appendix II. Commercial trade in plants and animals listed on Appendix II (about 3,700 animal and 21,000 plant species), is permitted as long as it is sustainable and the specimens are obtained legally. In the case of bears, this is seldom the case. The massive curving claws of a grizzly are so impressive that you can buy

BEARS are a powerful icon of North American wilderness. They are a large part of what makes our mountain landscape special. Many visitors yearn to see evidence that the great bears still roams free and wild here. For some, just knowing that bears are out there, living their natural lives, is enough. One thing is common to us all: every one of us shares a responsibility for their survival. Did you know? - The grizzly bear is an ‘indicator’ species. The health of our great bear population indicates the ability of the regional landscape to support hundreds of other wildlife species as well. - Although these mountain landscapes may appear huge, they contain a relatively small amount of good bear habitat. (Most of our Rockies are too rocky!)

    Conservation Genetics of Grizzly Bears
This work was conducted by Lance Craighead, Research Director of CERI, in collaboration with Harry Reynolds, David Paetkau, Ernie Vyse, and Curt Strobek at the Strobeck Genetics Lab at the University of Alberta, Edmonton, and at Ernie Vyse's Genetics Lab at Montana State University. Field work was supported by the Alaska Dept. of Fish and Game and the National Park Service. Lab work supported by Montana State University, University of Alberta, Parks Canada, Alberta Fish and Wildlife Service, and donations from private foundations. The demographics of an Arctic grizzly bear population were studied for 17 years in the foothills of the Western Brooks Range in Alaska under the direction of Harry Reynolds of the Alaska Department of Fish and Game. During that time 489 captures of 256 individual bears resulted in detailed observations of maternal/offspring relationships. We used DNA microsatellite analysis to examine paternity and male reproductive success. The genetic research resulted in Lance Craighead's PhD dissertation in Biological Sciences at Montana State University.
