Parks and Outdoor Recreation General Information Introduction Additional Information Regulations Introduction Alaska State Parks offers more than 40 recreational cabins for use by the public. The cabins are located along trails and near remote lakes, streams, and saltwater beaches. Most cabins are accessible year 'round, by either floatplane, wheelplane, boat, or trail. Only four cabins are accessible by road. Hikers should prepare for back country travel and to provide emergency shelter if they are unable to reach their cabin. State park cabins sleep from three to eight persons and are equipped with wooden sleeping platforms, a wood stove for heating only, a table, chairs or benches, and a nearby latrine. Designs vary. Only the Shuyak Island cabins have dishware, a propane stove, and lights. Renters should take insect repellent (in spring and summer), an air mattress or pad as well as a sleeping bag, gas or propane stove for cooking, and some way to purify water. Most public use cabins have a nearby water source, although the water will need purifying. Visitors should be prepared to gather firewood in the vicinity of the cabins, or bring their own firewod.

By the early 1900s, the once-flourishing bear population was nearly wiped out by increased development, habitat destruction and poaching. By 1956, only 12 bears were counted in the entire state. Bear conservation was so successful that the population has doubled in the last five years alone. Now Maryland Department of Natural Resources has shifted from scrambling to save a disappearing species to exploring ways to balance a burgeoning bear population that has outgrown human comfort. Come October, hunters may be taking up guns to solve the problem. After a three-year study of bear population dynamics over the past decade, the Department of Natural Resources Black Bear Task Force last year proposed a limited black bear hunt to control the growing bear population. That is why friends of bears are up in arms this spring, making their case to lawmakers, citizens and even the courts. Permission for access to and specific measurement activities at BEARS is granted by the Atmospheric Sciences Section of the Illinois State Water Survey (ISWS). An ISWS Scientific Coordinating Committee (Clyde W. Sweet, Van C. Bowersox, Steve Hollinger, and Gary J. Stensland) sets policy and operational and safety rules for BEARS users. The objectives are 1) to insure that siting criteria for each project are met, 2) to see that no new project will create disturbance or interference with existing monitoring, 3) to facilitate awareness among all site users of all activities at the site, 4) to encourage interchange of data, and 5) to provide for maintenance and facilities development to meet the scientific needs of all on-site projects. Clyde Sweet is the Scientific Coordinator for the site and Michael C. Snider is the Site Technician. For each BEARS user-project, an ISWS scientist is identified as a technical liaison. Each project PI provides the Scientific Coordinator with a detailed project description, including siting criteria and possible interferences, a summary of project objectives, and a list of the data being collected. For ongoing projects, copies of progress reports and other publications based on the work are also compiled at ISWS. Clyde Sweet coordinates requests for access to data collected at BEARS, whether from ISWS or any other on-site projects. A BEARS Web site has been established with information on specific projects and links to other WEB sites with BEARS-related information.
