US Endangered Species Act turns 30
Birthday comes at critical point for US conservation policy.
23 December 2003 JOHN WHITFIELD Grizzly future? Bears are protected under the Endangered Species Act. One of the world's most important pieces of environmental legislation, the US Endangered Species Act (ESA), is 30 years old this week. The anniversary finds the ESA as it has been for much of its life: dogged by controversy. The Bush administration has declared the act "broken", a move that environmentalists see as a prelude to dismantling it. The ESA states that animals have been "rendered extinct as a consequence of economic growth and development". The act gives powers to curb this development - protecting critical habitats and making it illegal to harm endangered species. The legislation has worked well for charismatic animals such as bears and eagles. But many US politicians believe that act is damaging commercial growth. The God Squad Since its creation the ESA has been amended and its powers reduced. In 1978 the US Supreme Court halted construction of the Tellico Dam in Tennessee - despite US$78 million already having been spent on the project - because the dam threatened the habitat of a small fish, the snail darter.

Description:
Giant pandas are an endangered species. They are often called pandas or panda bears, although their scientific name is Ailurpoda Melanoleuca. The giant panda is a large mammal weighing between 165-353 pounds. Its body length is between 4-5 feet including a tail that is five inches long. Their vision is poor but their sense of smell is excellent. They have a woolly black and white coat, which is slightly oily to prevent water penetration. Giant pandas are a very beautiful animal. This is why we have to so everything we can to save them. If panda breeding habits can be perfected maybe the giant pandas will not become extinct.
Environment:
Problems:
There are a few reasons why the giant panda is endangered. One reason is that the panda breeding season takes place only from March to May. This makes it harder to breed a lot of pandas and increase the panda population. A second reason that pandas are endangered is because of where they live in the wild. Giant pandas are restricted to certain areas of China, their habitat, so that means that there is not enough space for all the pandas to live in.

Description:
Black bears that have white coats are still called black bears, but since they are so different, they are called Kermode or Spirit bears. A full grown kermode bear is about as big as two men, sometimes bigger and weighs about 250 pounds. When it stands up, it looks like a big, fat, man in a fur coat! The Kermode bear's fur keeps it warm and dry and it is made of two kinds of hair. Kermode bears are very strong and can turn over heavy logs when searching for food. Kermode bears have white claws and cream coloured coats. They have brown eyes and beige noses. They are "omnivorous" which means that they eat meat and plants. They need lots of food! They eat honey from wild bees nests, grasshoppers, grass and ants, roots, berries, nuts and fruit, mice and ground squirrels, fish and lots of salmon. Kermode bears drink large amounts of water. during hot weather they swim to cool off.

Wetlands support many of Florida's most popular and endangered species. The Southwest Florida Water Management District has acquired several tracts of wetlands in order to preserve them. Imagine travelling back in time a few hundred years and visualize the area where you live. What do you see there? No houses or cars, buildings or streets. Instead you see mostly marshes and grasslands, swamps and forests-hardly touched by humans. What animals might you see there? In wild grasslands, you might see a red wolf stalking its prey. In an estuary, you might see a West Indian monk seal sunning itself in the warm water. In a large open plain, you might even see a small herd of roaming buffalo. Florida still has millions of acres of wetlands and wilderness where a variety of animals den and nest, eat and are eaten. However, some animals are missing from the Florida landscape. The wolf, monk seal and buffalo among many others have all disappeared from Florida -they have become extinct. The Florida Game and Fresh Water Fish Commission currently lists more than 100 animals in the state as endangered, threatened, or species of special concern. Each of these species is in danger of becoming extinct unless the harmful factors affecting their habitats cease. Animals in Florida can become extinct for a number of reasons, ranging from loss of habitat to overhunting, from pesticides to vehicle collisions. Some species have become so fragile that a hurricane or viral infection can cause their extinction. Once a species becomes extinct, it is gone forever. Many of Florida's most popular animals including the panther, manatee and our national symbol, the bald eagle face the risk of becoming extinct - unless people act in order to save them. Fortunately, people today care now more than ever and are willing to act, brightening the future of many of the animals currently listed as endangered species.

Threatened and Endangered Species GLOSSARY biodiversity (biological diversity)
: the variety of life on Earth. It refers to the genetic diversity within a species, the variety of the species themselves, and the varieties of ecosystems. The greater the diversity or variety there is in a system, the greater the strength and stability the system has over the long run; diversity strengthens the potential of a population to cope with, or respond to, changes in the environment candidate species : plants and animals for which enough scientific information exists to warrant a proposal for listing as endangered or threatened The candidate designation can be thought of as a population that is teetering on the edge of a critical illness and is being carefully watched; the population is closely monitored to determine if they need to be included on the state or federal threatened or endangered species lists. These populations are not stable, and, in some cases the viability of that species is in question carnivore : an organism that eats only meat. The gray wolf and salmon are examples of carnivores

Endangered Species
Endangered speciesplants, and animals in imminent danger of extinctionremain the focus of many national and international conservation programs, particularly "charismatic megafauna," such as African lions, Siberian tigers, and panda bears. The Red List of endangered species around the world is maintained by the IUCN or World Conservation Union. Species are categorized as either critically endangered, endangered, or vulnerable. The World Conservation Monitoring Centre maintains a searchable database for endangered species. In the United States, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service maintains the list of threatened and endangered species in America. The Fish and Wildlife Service site provides lists by state . Also available are statistics, maps, educational resources, and images of endangered and threatened species. According to the FWS July 2001 "boxscore," the total number of endangered and threatened species in the United States is 1244 (507 animals and 737 plants). World Conservation Union (IUCN)

International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources. The Red List is a compilation of species categorized as Critically Endangered, Endangered, or Vulnerable according to the IUCN Categories of Threat. For the most part, categorizations are made by the Species Survival Commission (SSC) Specialist Group covering the taxa in question. Guidelines for using the Red List criteria have been developed to assist Specialist Groups in assessing the conservation status of fishes. The most recent edition of the Red List, which utilized these criteria, is the 1996 IUCN Red List of Threatened Animals. The WCMC Animals Database holds information on threatened species and others of conservation concern. Part of this database is used to generate The IUCN Red List of Threatened Animals, and this information is available here in interactive format.

Introduction
The Natural Resources DNA Profiling and Forensics Centre (NRDPFC) at Trent University currently conducts studies on Canadian and international animals considered to be at risk. This may include species designated as extirpated, endangered, threatened, or of special concern, and includes diverse animals such as frogs, wolves, bears, and whales. The Committee on the Status of Endangered Species in Canada (COSEWIC) is responsible for determining the national status of wild Canadian species. The Species at Risk program of the Canadian Wildlife Service (CWS) , which is responsible for federal wildlife issues, is currently proposing legislation (Bill C-5) that will protect species designated as "at risk" by COSEWIC.
