39 WYKEHAM FIELD WICKHAM, HANTS ENGLAND PO17 5AD CAPTIVE CARE SHEET SPECIES: INLAND BEARDED DRAGON Pogona vitticeps Grows to a maximum length of 50cm, 2/3 of the length being tail. Although babies are quite expensive they make excellent first time lizards. DISTRIBUTION: Most of the eastern half of Australia plus the southern Northern territories. Their main habitat is semi arid areas. They are often seen basking on the sides of roads, on fence posts and fallen logs. HOUSING: Unless they can be housed in very large enclosures, Bearded Dragons should be kept in pairs . This is to avoid domination and aggression which can cause stress and ultimately death. I house my bearded dragons as pairs in a vivarium measuring 1.2M x 0.6M x 0.5M. Bearded Dragons require UV light mine is supplied using an Activa 172 UV tube with the starter enclosed by mesh on the back wall to provide a background heat source.A basking site on a rock is achieved by a 60W spotlight wire to a thermostat over it. A 20W heat mat is used to provide heating at night. The daytime background temperature is 28c, at the hot spot it is 40c. Night time temperatures are 24c. The substrate used is bird sand. DIET: Bearded dragons like a varied diet, this should included crickets, giant mealworms, locusts, plus dandelions(leaves and flowers), watercress, kale, broccoli and soft fruit. Every other meal should be supplemented with a calcium and or vitamin D3 containing powder i.e. Nutrobal. The babies have a varied diet with insects proportional to their size.

is BellaOnline's Reptiles and Amphibians Host Feeding your Bearded Dragon There are many things you can feed your bearded dragon. They enjoy eating moths, meal worms, wax worms, and crickets. Bearded dragons also eat greens such as lettuce, kale, dandylion, and other dark green leafy greens. Never feed your dragon a firefly or bee it will kill it within a matter of minutes.
If you’re planning on feeding crickets to your lizard make sure you don’t feed it too many at once because crickets are known to get hungry and eat the lizard’s skin.
When you give it water make sure you change it at least once every two days because the water gets dirty fast and dirty water is bad for all lizards.
A good way to get food without needing to go to the pet store every day is by breeding your own food. The way to breed mealworms is by getting a small or medium sized container and putting some oatmeal or chicken feed in it, then put in some potato halves and cover it with paper towel sheets. When your done doing that put about 150 meal worms in it, wait a couple weeks and then some will turn into beetles and then the beetles will breed and lay eggs. Make sure you don’t feed all the meal worms to the lizards before they turn into beetles.
Once you start to feed your lizard you can either feed it by hand or place the worms in a shallow dish.

Actually I love all animals, but all animals aren't exactly feasible to have, whereas one (or ten!) lizards are manageable. O:-) hehe. I always thought I would get a little gecko or some other small lizard that wouldn't take up much room or need a ton of care to keep it healthy. Ha. Yeah right. Like I can ever be happy with such small-scale plans as that. Bigger is better, right? Yep! YepYepYepYepYepYepYep. (Remember the alien things on Sesame Street? I loved those guys.) ENCLOSURE

A 10 - 20 gallon aquarium is sufficient for juveniles. As the lizards grow, increase the size of the enclosure. Adults should have plenty of room to remain active. A floor area of 1.5 - 2 feet square or larger is recommended for each adult. Males should not be kept together unless a very large enclosure is used as they tend to fight in confined spaces
SUBSTRATE
Sand is your best choice. Avoid silica sand as it's fine dust is harmful to you and the lizards. You can obtain sanitized play sand at your local home center. Provide a layer of at least 2 inches. Keep the sand clean by sifting and removing any waste with a cat scooper used for cat boxes. Change the sand completely every 3 months, or sooner if needed. Decorate with Zoo Med REPTI-FLORA™, drift wood, grape vines or Zoo Med LIZARD LADDERS™.
Overall daytime temperatures should be 85ºf with a basking area of 90 - 95ºf aimed at a branch or large rock on one end of the enclosure. Nighttime temperatures can drop to 75ºf.

There are eight species of Bearded Dragons (genus Pogona) in Australia. Here is a brief overview of differences and where each species would be found. Inland Bearded Dragon - Pogona Vitticeps will grow to approximately 25" about 60cm females are smaller in size than males. The Central, or Inland Bearded Dragon lives in central areas of Australia, down to the south central coast near Adelaide. They can live in a wide variety of habitats, including desert, dry forests, and scrubland. p.vitticeps eat insects, flowers, soft leaves, and shoots. This is the most common of the pogona species in the pet trade. And many different size and colour morphs can be had from specialty breeders. Adult size is usually around 6-7" or 15-18cm snout-vent. The Rankin Dragon - Pogona henrylawsoni/Pogona Brevis a smaller dragon minus the beard of the p.vitticeps but the Rankin still has a great personality. A Rankin Dragon will grow to a maximum of 12" or 30cm. The Rankin lives in north-eastern Australia in the province of Queensland, and is sometimes reported in the adjacent Northern Territories. This is one of the smaller species, and also has a quite small 'beard'. The Rankin is less common in the pet trade.
