Bearded dragons are fairly easy reptiles to care for, relatively speaking. They readily eat foods that are easy to obtain; they can tolerate a pretty wide range of temperatures, and their more common medical problems are treatable by many veteranarians. However, for a bearded dragon to really thrive, they need the right environment and a well-considered diet. These care tips are meant to share some of the most important dragon care items that we've learned from experience, from books, and from web sites. They are not a complete guide to bearded dragon care; more comprehensive care information is available from Melissa Kaplan: Dragons Down Under and from General Bearded Dragon Care A very important point for beginner reptile owners: get care information before you buy your reptile and bring it home. Click on one of the links to jump right to a particular section, or just scroll down to read the sections in order.
      Picking a Bearded Dragon
It is important to select a healthy, well-adjusted young dragon. Usually, it is best to get a very young dragon so that you can have the fun of watching it grow, and so that you can get it used to people and handling. Buying a lizard mail-order, sight unseen, is pretty chancy, and should be avoided.

The Bearded Dragon is quite docile and does not require much handling to become a docile pet. The most common subspecies of the Bearded Dragon is P.vitticeps, also known as the Yellow-Headed Bearded Dragon. Bearded Dragons are fairly large lizards that grow to about 20 inches (50cm), and have a very wide body. Like many other agamids, they have a triangular, blunt head. The scales on the throat and head are pointed, as are the scales on the sides of the body. When threatened, the Dragon opens its mouth and flares out its throat.

Dragons Down Under: The Inland Bearded Dragon
"Oh! A horned toad! I haven't seen one of those in years!" is a comment I often hear when event-goers see my bearded dragon. To me, the resemblance is superficial: the flattened body liberally supplied with sharp-looking spikes of various sizes. The head shape is very different, however, with the bearded dragon's being bluntly triangular as opposed to the slightly rounded head shape of the horned toad (whose proper name is horned lizard, Phrynosoma sp.) which is also furnished with longer spikes protruding from the back of the skull. The horned lizards are native to the American Southwest while the bearded dragons are native to Australia and New Guinea. Australia is home to a number of dragons, a name given to many of their agamid lizards which include the popular bearded dragons and water dragons. Australia has very restrictive export laws relating to its wildlife; thus, the bearded dragons found in the U.S. pet trade are descendants from founder animals imported from Europe. Bearded dragons are gaining popularity as pets. Wonderfully tempered, intriguing in appearance, quizzical in countenance, these lizards do not get very large (especially in relation to the green iguana), and require little in the nature of active training or taming to make them calm and handleable. As with all reptiles, there are important things to know before buying a bearded, and to keep them healthy and long-lived.

BEARDED DRAGON
Distribution: Australia Habitat: Almost anywhere they are very adaptable but some of the sub species live in only one small area i.e. certain forests but the basic care is the same. Size: Average 45-60cm depending on species. Some of the smaller types only reach @30cm these are full size including tails. Number of eggs: 5-27 with an average of 20-25 for most five or six times a year
Introduction
This is an ideal first lizard, as it generally has a very good disposition. This lizard is also very Capable of withstanding a large temperature range so it is very hardy making it an excellent First lizard. Another good lizard is the leopard gecko. Bearded dragon may be kept single or in-groups but males need to establish a peer system and whilst this is being established males may/will fight and toes and bits of tail can be lost in this process.
Buying your Bearded Dragon
If you are new to lizards you should buy from somewhere that is recommended to you Or where you are happy that the staff will be able to help you if you have any problems. It is a good idea to buy from specialist shops, as they should have a better knowledge of the reptile You wish to buy. All good dealers will give at least a 14-day money back trial period should you Find your lizard not as easy to feed or handle as you had hoped. As babies they are very hard to sex and most shops/sellers will be unable to sex reliable. They are easy to sex as adults.
Care of your Dragon
Temperature should be 90-100 F during the day at the hot end of the vivarium, with a 15-20 F Drop at night. It is best to have two thermometers, one at each end of the vivarium so you know the temperature at the hot and cold ends.

The circus. The place where people show off their physical talents. But has anyone thought about what a lizard circus would be like? The perfect species for this would be the Australian Bearded Dragons. Although not every Bearded Dragon of the eight different species actually have beards, when they do have beards, the females have beards as well as the males. Therefore, you already have your bearded lady. Also, their bellies can be gray, brown, or brick red, so instead of a red clown nose, they have red bellies. As for fire eaters, the Dragons' body when basking heats higher than 100 degrees F! So, these wonderful lizards are amazing, and they also make great pets.
The Lovable Lizards
is included in their diet. It consists of grey crickets, giant mealworms, mealworms, waxworms, pinkie mice, and roaches. Although protien is without question the main course on the Bearded Dragons' menu, finely chopped vegetables are necessary as well. They consist of mustard greens, collard greens, beet greens, kale, bok choy, thawed mixed veggies, fancy dark lettuce, sprouts, green beans, peas, nasturtium leaves and flowers, hibiscus leaves and flowers, and dandelion leaves and flowers. Although the bugs in their diet may seem, well, unpleasant, after the owner of a Bearded Dragon has gotten used to it, the large lizard will become a friend that will last for years.

Distribution
There are three types of bearded dragons commonly kept by enthusiasts in Australia; the Eastern Bearded Dragon ( Pogona Barbata), the Pygmy Bearded Dragon ( P. henrylawsoni) and the Central Bearded Dragon ( Pogona vitticeps ) - also known as the 'Centralian' (see pics above). The Eastern Bearded Dragon occurs along the length of the Great Dividing Range and is replaced in more arid areas by the Central Bearded Dragon. Pygmy Bearded Dragons are native to the black soil plains of Central Queensland. Bearded dragons are terrestrial, sun-loving species and it is not uncommon to see them basking on the road side, on fence posts or logs. Of all the reptiles commonly kept, bearded dragons are amongst the most popular, due to their availability and relative ease of care.
Appearance
Bearded dragons are named for the distinctive flap of skin which lies below their jaw. When threatened, these lizards assume a defensive posture, opening their mouths and pushing their throat skin forward to make this 'beard'. This, combined with the strong spikes which line the lizard's throat and the side of its body serve as a deterrent to would-be predators.

and keeping them healthy What can be said about feeding bearded dragons is also largely applicable to feeding other insectivorous lizards that start life small but grow rapidly into relatively large animals. Examples include water dragons, frilled dragons and small monitors. F
eed insects that are as long as the width of your lizard's head. Offer food to hatchlings little and often, as much as they want, up to three times per day. If insufficiently fed, those in groups tendency to bite each have a other's toes and tails. Uneaten crickets distress and irritate lizards and need to be removed after a reasonable period. Crickets also eat lizard faeces, which can lead to re-infection with internal parasites. It is best practice to feed only what will be eaten quickly and then to remove any surplus. Added extras Hatchlings can be frightened of fast moving prey like crickets, putting the crickets in a fridge for a few minutes slows them down All insect food should be both gut loaded with high quality insect food, and dusted with a highly adherent calcium powder especially for hatchlings. To enable calcium intake to be absorbed each individual must receive a regular weekly supplement of easily reptile-assimilated vitamin D3 ,or very close access to a specialist reptile ultraviolet fluorescent lamp, claiming an output of 5% UVB light. Bearded dragons also take vegetable matter. Spray this with tepid water to keep it fresh longer and provide additional moisture intake. Offer grapes, green beans, dandelion leaves and flowers, clover, Romaine lettuce, mustard greens, peas and sweet corn.

Inland Bearded Dragon ( Pogona vitticeps Care in Captivity by Chris Jorden Introduction Bearded dragons are extremely popular at the moment, and are becoming even more increasingly so all the time. They have wonderful temperaments, and some even seem to enjoy being handled, the breed fairly easily and they display interesting social behaviour like courtship, threat and recognition. Bearded dragons grow to between 40 and 60 cm (16 - 24 inches) in length, although the males are usually bigger than females. Bearded dragons are a greyish brown in colour, although many colour types can be encountered, the prettier of these include lime phase, gold phase and sandfire red phase. Although these Australian lizards can be a great choice for beginners, their need for ultra-violet light, regular feeding and cleaning, and a very large vivarium can make them harder to keep than other smaller species such as leopard geckos and green anoles. Selecting A Bearded Dragon Before your decide to purchase one of these comical lizards, you must do a lot of research using books, web pages and by talking to experienced herpotologists or herpoculturists, and you must be sure you have the time and space for one of these quite demanding animals.

I. GEOGRAPHIC RANGE
  • The inland bearded dragon has a wide natural distribution in eastern and central Australia. They are found from the eastern half of south Australia to the southeastern Northern Territory.
II. PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS
  • Inland bearded dragons are 13 to 24 inches long, including the tail.
  • They are appropriately named bearded dragons because of their "beard," an expandable throat pouch with spiky scales.
  • They have a broad, triangular head, round body, stout legs, and robust tail.
  • Color for this species depends on the soil of the region they live in, ranging from dull brown to tan with red or gold highlights.
III. FOOD HABITS
  • Inland bearded dragons are opportunistic omnivores. They live in areas where food may be hard to find so bearded dragons are not finicky eaters.
  • Their stomachs are large to accommodate large quantities of plant matter, insects and the occasional small rodent or lizard.

Bearded Dragon By Calandra and Josephine
Size and Appearance: At 4 weeks old it is 5 inches long and at 9 weeks old it is 10 inches. They are generally brown in colour with various markings of red to yellow depending on species. When the male animal is frightened or defending his territory from another male, the scales of the bottom side of the neck can be raised. Relatives: Frill neck lizards. Breeding: Female Bearded Dragons lay clutches of 15-25 eggs. The hatchling are 8-10cm long. They vary in colour and size, the males having larger beards. They take four months to mature. The young feed one to two times a day. Adults feed every one to two days. About 20 percent of the diet should be vegetables. Bearded Dragons as Pets The Bearded dragon is a reptile and a good pet if you want. However, they must have hiding areas out of the light so they can properly regulate their heat. As Australia does not allow its wildlife to be exported, the animals currently available are descendents of a small number removed years ago. Bearded Dragons are mainly insect eaters. About
