Welcome to Blissful Beadwork Art Designs located in Sedona, Arizona. Each of the above candle sleeves is designed to slip onto "meditation" or "miracle" glass tumbler candles. Every sleeve is specifically designed to fit the glass candle container. Approximately one hundred hours of labor and up to 25,000 glass seed beads are used to complete a candle sleeve. Each is hand beaded around the candle using tubular peyote stitch and Nymo thread, The design flows seamlessly around the candle. These candles sleeves are heirloom quality with great attention paid to precision and perfection of design and workmanship. Great pride is taken in each creation. Each hand-woven candle sleeve is a piece of artwork that you will enjoy for many years. Every candle sleeve is an original design, using a combination of opaque and transparent Japanese glass seed beads. When lit, the candlelight shines through the transparent beads setting off highlights and giving definition and depth to the design. The candles used are manufactured to burn for 100 hours. Once the candle has burned part of the way, simply drop in a pillar, votive or tea light candle. Alternatively, you can purchase paraffin wax and wicks at your local craft store and refill the candles.

62. Beadwork -- Mary Tafoya (Introduction)
For countless generations, beadwork has rested upon the heart of humankind s most significant cultural displays, occupying an intimate place in religion
http://www.flash.net/~mjtafoya/mary/
F or countless generations, beadwork has rested upon the heart of humankind's most significant cultural displays, occupying an intimate place in religion, ceremony, social status and commerce. Today's bead artists draw from ancient techniques, as well as new technologies, to create awe-inspiring objects whose impact magnifies as each bead is chosen, one at a time, to dance in light and shadow. There is no other craft like beadwork "to bede " once meant "to pray". Enjoy the bead art contained herein. Mary Portfolio About the Artist Contact Links ©2003 Mary J. Tafoya. the art of ndebele beadwork
By Lindsay Hooper, South African Museum
Sagittarius
Volume 3, Number 4 December 1988 Razor blades, telephone poles, car registration numbers - what could these have in common? They are amongst the variety of ordinary objects which form part of the everyday experience of people, but for Ndebele artists, they provide inspiration for the development of bold designs for beadwork and wall painting. Travellers through the flat southern Transvaal landscape are struck by the vivid colours and patterns of Ndebele homesteads, and if lucky, may see Ndebele women dressd for special occasions in their dazzling beadwork finery. Some people familiar with the people and area may observe current changes from glass beads to plastic beads, braid and other innovations, and may bewail these as a loss of 'tradition'. To consider whether this is so, it is necessary to know a little of the history of the southern Transvaal Ndebele. Linguistically they are related to other southern African Nguni speakers (the Xhosa, Zulu, Swazi and Ndebele in Zimbabwe). They are thought to have moved from Natal to the Transvaal area at some time between the fifteenth and seventeenth centuries. Succession struggles split the group, and further scattering followed the onslaught of Mzilikazi and his soldiers as they moved northwards from Shaka's kingdom in the nineteenth century. Later in the nineteenth century the Ndzundza section of the Ndebele, in the southern Transvaal, were involved in battles against the Pedi under Sekhukhune. Partly as a consequence of this hostility, they came into fierce conflict with the Zuid-Afrikaansche Republiek. The Ndzundza were defeated in 1882 after a long campaign, and the Z.A.R., determined to break their power, settled white farmers on the chiefs land and dispersed the Ndebele as farm labourers.

D ouble-needle applique is the beading technique that Maude Kegg, Mille Lacs Ojibwe elder, uses for most of her beadwork, at least in part. Her 1982 museum bandolier appliques all beads of the pattern, and the solid white field, on the straps and pouch, which has woven beadwork tassels. D ouble needle means there are 2 threads in use. On the bead thread are lined up a number usually not too many of beads which are laid down on the fabric where they go in the pattern, which is being made by one continuous thread making sinuous curves that give the patrn its dynamic. The second needle holds the whipping thread, which whips over the beading thread between each bead or every few beads in for faster, sloppier beadworkers (like me). T he easiest pattern for the novice beadworker to learn applique on is the circular rosette. The turtle you see above right was the second thing I made (a small pouch to hold tobacco). I gave it away, so while I don't know if my adopted niece still has it, it exists very vividly in my mind. Computer-beading of it for these pags was comparatively simple, because the entire pattern is one circular rosette, with dark green beads to make the turtle. The dimensions of the squat cylinder which is a seed bead's shape will determine exactly how many beads form a smooth circle around the center. By varying the colors counting or copying a pattern, but usually by eye if doing your own the circular rosette can make a variety of patterns, often radial ones, for neck medallions and other small circular objects.

72. Turtle Island Productions
Discusses chippewa/ojibway customs such as spear fishing, the megis shell, wild rice, maple sugar, beadwork, moccasins, the canoe and the pow wow. It also includes a quotation from William W. Warren about an Ojibway prophecy.
http://www.turtle-island.com/customs.html
"The Ojibways affirm that long before they became aware of the white man's presence on this continent, their coming was prophesied by one of their old men, whose great sanctity and oft-repeated fasts enabled him to commune with spirits and see far into the future. He prophesied that the white spirits would come in numbers like sand on the lake shore, and would sweep the red race from the hunting grounds which the Great Spirit had given them as an inheritance. It was phrophesied that the consequences of the white man's appearance would be, to the Anishinabeg, an ending of the world." William W. Warren Ojibway Spear Fishing Ojibway Megis Shells Ojibway Manomin (Wild Rice) "Manomin" or wild rice is an essential part of Ojibway culture, and as described above, figures prominently in Ojibway Oral History. The harvesting of wild rice has always been an important part of life for Ojibway people. In addition to the contribution of food, "Manomin" has played a key role in the social life of Ojibway people; as harvest time provided an opportunity to visit with nearby relatives and friends in neighboring bands. Wild rice has always been regarded by the Ojibway as the sacred gift of their chosen ground. Any effort today to over-harvest or commercialize wild rice by Non-Indians has met with failure. Wild rice has always been generous to those who gather and use her in a respectful way. Today, many Ojibway families still harvest "Manomin" just as our ancestors did; one person steers the canoe and another sweeps the rice into the canoe and beats it with a stick, knocking the husks to the floor of the canoe.
