Here is what I’ve come up with for care and feeding of beaded vases, and should work for most beadwork.  Basically, treat the beadwork like you would your favorite cashmere sweater… Clean glass with a soft cloth or paper towel dampened with glass cleaner (do not spray cleaner directly onto vase or beadwork).  Back to Main Gallery

(Some of you are having trouble with the phrase flat stitch. I call it flat stitch because that is what the guy called it when he showed me how to do it. If you call it something else, fine, I won't be offended. It is not lazy stitch, it is not sewn on leather or cloth, it might be brick stitch, etc. I am not really sure.)
Good news:
A visitor may have solved the controversy.
Quote
"The first time I saw that stitch was at a Pow Wow. Grandma Redbird called it "fake loom" but I have also found instructions for it under the name "square stitch" . . .that is, if I'm judging it right"

Beaded art inspired by traditional Southeastern Woodlands Native American Indian beadwork. Mrs. Berry creates bandolier bags, moccasins, belts, sashes and men's garters, in the styles worn by the Cherokee, Creek, Choctaw, Chickasaw, and Seminole, prior to 1850. Display mounts for bandolier bags are also available. To order patterns and how-to instructions for making Southeastern Woodlands beadwork, click here and order online. We offer patterns for traditional bandolier bags, ceremonial sashes, belts and three styles of moccasins. To purchase Mrs. Berry's finished beadwork, please e-mail her directly. Thank you. "Those who are at the forefront of teaching our culture are our artists and crafts people. People like Martha Berry, Lena Blackbird, Anna Mitchell, Knokovtee Scott, Bill Glass, Talmadge Davis, Mary Adair, and many others memorialize and teach our culture and traditional arts. But as each of them know and would tell you, their Cherokee projects must be historically accurate and culturally true; otherwise, they have compromised the value of their work."

Hello
You have reached the web site of the
Center for the Study of Beadwork
Please scroll down to see links to our Peter Francis Jr. pages.

Although recently updated (04/21/03), this web site is still in the early stages of development. The initial activity of this site will be to sell books and magazines, the profits from which will be used to support this site. For those interested in more Ornament Magazines than I show here, I've created a page detailing issues that I don't carry, but which Ornament does, including prices, shipping charges and contact information. That can be reached at the bottom of the Ornament Magazine page on this site.
It is no longer possible to become a member of the CSB. Back issues of notes from a Beadworker's Journal , however, are still available for purchase. However, although I have a link below for it, I still need to write the copy for that link. Check back in another few weeks to see if I've gotten the copy written.
Other resources will continue to be added, including services to the field.
The CSB library is available for research, by appointment.
