25. The Zulu Beadwork Language
beadwork in the ZULU cultural tradition. The deliberate breaking of rules by which these factors operate. beadwork is a byproduct of feminine socialization.
http://minotaur.marques.co.za/clients/zulu/bead.htm
Beadwork in the ZULU cultural tradition.
All traditional ZULU beadwork, excluding items used by ritual specialists, relates in someway to courtship and marriage. According to Regina Twala (African Studies, Volume 10, no 3 1951, pp 113 - 123), it also helps to regulate behaviour between individuals of opposite gender. This exclusively feminine craft has an inituitive fluency found only in inspired forms of poetry and visual art. Beadworkers are unware of a "system" such as that imposed upon language by spelling rules and grammar. However, no true art is without discipline, so ZULU craftswomen accept certain fundamentals:
  • Beadwork communicates between unrelated males and females, avoiding the discomfort of direct initial discourse on the sensitive subject of personal relations.
  • Beadwork flows from females, the designers and manufactures, to males - their traditional clients.
  • Men wear beadwork to show involvement with women they may marry, incestuous implications preclude beaded gifts from mothers, sisters and daugters.
  • Beadwork symbolism is encoded within a limited number of colours and geometric figures.

Our grandmother was known as a master in the art of hide tanning and beadwork specializing in intricate floral and geometric designs of the Intermountain tribes. Our grandfather also helped us by telling us about the colors of the sky and the animals, explaining to us about the markings, and movements of certain wildlife. Our grandparents both were very great people to our family. We had alot of encouragement in doing our beadwork from both grandparents, I combined both geometric and wildlife together and developed a style that is very unique, My mentor Clyde Hall whose's family own's the Corner Merc trading Post in the middle of Fort Hall, townsite just across the Indian agency who has been taking my beadwork around the United States, tells me and our family that my beadwork is sought after through out the united States including Chicago and california. We take specialty orders for all types of handmade beadwork items.

30. Brilliantly Beaded: Northeastern Native American Beadwork
Peoples. Brilliantly Beaded explores the evolution of Northeastern beadwork from the seventeenth century to the presentday. Copyright
http://www.umaine.edu/hudsonmuseum/virtual1.htm
Purses Moccasins Novelties Regalia ... Resources Brilliantly Beaded celebrates the rich beadworking traditions of Native peoples of the Northeast through the objects they created for their own use and to sell to others. Early European explorers describe indigenous clothing, which was made from hides and furs and decorated with painted motifs, porcupine quill, moosehair embroidery and shell beads. Among the trade items Europeans brought with them to North America were glass seed beads, needles, thread, ribbons and cloth. These materials rapidly replaced earlier decorative traditions that relied on the use of bone awls, sinew and painted designs. Native Peoples incorporated not only these new materials, but also new design motifs and decorative treatments from European sources and from other Native Peoples. Brilliantly Beaded explores the evolution of Northeastern beadwork from the seventeenth century to the present-day. Exhibits Home

While restoration of antique beaded purses takes up most of my time, now and then I get a few moments to work on a project of my own. What better way to understand how an antique purse was made than to make a replica using antique patterns and age old techniques? I am on a quest to learn all I can about this vanishing art form. I don't sell the purses I make, but I do have antique purses as well as frames and patterns available on my For Sale pages. You can also check my links page for references to other sites with antique beaded purses or reproductions, information or patterns. Each one of these purses took me about three months to complete. Click on any of the images below to see a larger version " September Wedding " Bead knitted with 11/0 white Charlotte (1 cut) beads on size E ivory silk thread. I framed it using an antique silverplated filigree gatetop purse frame. I designed this purse for my sister's wedding and basically I’ve decided that to really get something finished I need a deadline. If you are interested in the pattern I have it for sale on my

Welcome in Ablaya's Gallery
Native-American, Plains and Sioux beadwork
-Southwest Jewelry-
If you are in a hurry, you will find the entrance at the bottom of this page.. Frequently, beaded art labeled as native-american is shoddy or made with substandard products; here you will find only the finest hand made items. I use traditional patterns, even if sometimes I like to create modern things, and the same natural materials used in the Plains Indian culture - deerskin, glass, bones and horn. This gallery is my tribute to the artistry of the Plains Indians and features my own work. I have a Master's degree in Ethnology and am passionate about the authentic Plain's culture, giving the best of myself in my creations. All you will see here is made with love and based on traditional designs. Since these items are hand-made, there are not two items that are exactly alike. Variations in cut, color, beads etc. make each item unique. If there's something special you want and don't see please get in touch with me. I am happy to take commissions. My prices are very reasonable because I want to promote the Plain's culture by making these very good quality artifacts available to a wide audience. I am glad to welcome you in the new "native-american silver jewelry " (navajo, zuni, hopi..) section of the Gallery !!

M anidoominens Anishnaabemowin for "seed beads" means "little seed (-minens) that's a gift of the spirit (Manidoo), or Spirit Seeds. " Miinens " is the fruit of the hawthorn tree, miinensagaawunzh . Perhaps seed beads were named for this tree because its 5-lobed leaves reminded the women of hands. They may have learned from the Ursuline nuns who taught bead embroidery in the early 1700's that the hawthorn's thorny branches were used for Christ's crown of thorns, and so felt the tree was sacred to the Europeans, who brought seed beads, this gift of beauty and skill. I ts white or pink 5-petaled flower is actually the "daisy"motif, the first thing young girls learn to bead because it's easy and fast.
