It suffers from many of the same design flaws that the real cheap charcoal smokers have. Anything that uses a charcoal pan is pretty much worthless. Why? The accumulated ash will eventually smother your live coals. There is NO air flow underneath because there are no holes to allow it. This means every hour or so you will need to dispose of the ash. Since BBQing is a long period of cooking time, this chore will become a real pain. Look instead for something that has a charcoal grate that is suspended above the bottom of the cooker. This allows all the ashes to drop below and not interfere with your hot coals. It also has a flawed venting system, which is partially caused by the charcoal pan. If you look real close, you will notice the bottom vents are actually higher than the charcoal pan. Since your airflow will go directly from those vents to the top vent, it will completely miss the charcoal. Therefore, VERY little control over your fire. What little air does get to the coals is greatly impeded by the pan itself. Instead, look for a smoker that has the vent below the charcoal grate. This will feed your coals enough or as little air as you want making fire control a breeze.

Follow Ups Post Followup My Message Board FAQ Posted by Mike on April 16, 2004 at 09:57:12: In Reply to: Re: Nexgrill- Commnets regarding variance in quality in grills at various stores posted by Gary on April 13, 2004 at 12:54:25: Gary, I think that we will have to agree to disagree. I want to start out by saying I read Consumer Reports quite frequently and often use them in my own buying decisions. But I have found their evaluations to be flawed on occasion. Most of the time the model that I am interested in has not been reviewed, and I sometimes disagree with their ratings in the subjective categories. As for salesmen and even managers at stores evaluating the products. They are usually only familiar with the products that they sell (if your lucky) and and only know which products are popular in their store. American made used to mean something: ITS NOT CART BLANCH ANYMORE! I am a former Army Airborne Ranger so I am very Patriotic. But, now its Caveat emptor on everything you buy, that is the reason forums like this are so popular. I am not in the grill business nor sales but I did grow up around and am quite familiar with metal fabrication among other things. Also I have a passion for grilling, BBQing and Smoking which has led me to "look over" every grill I have seen. Grills have improved dramatically over recent years and all are much better than the grills of even five years ago. I may not be a "professional grill reviewer" if there even is such a thing, but I know all of the areas to look at and how they effect cooking performance and longevity of the grill itself. The burners are the heart of the grill and key to its overall performance. Their design, placement, and material they are made from can tell you alot about the grill.

Grilling Ithaca
Area restaurateurs share their BBQ inspirations
by Mark H. Anbinder One of the nice things about summertime in Ithaca is sitting outside at the picnic table with your laptop, writing happily away while enjoying the fresh air, sunshine, and babbling brook sounds of the season. An even nicer thing about summertime in Ithaca is putting down the laptop as the late afternoon shadows grow longer, popping open a beer and firing up the grill, and preparing one of many foods that's best enjoyed outdoors. This grilling season, 14850 Dining spoke with some of the area's restaurant owners and chefs about their own grilling favourites.
The Cook of the Family
Peter Ciferri, of Simeon's on the Commons, says "I come from a big Italian family. When I was growing up, we used to have big, big family meals put on by my grandmother and aunts. I got started in cooking with raviolis, using the fork on the edge, and moved up to gnocchi." As a teenager in the Bronx, Peter worked as a short-order diner cook, and really got into Asian foods thanks to a tour of duty in Vietnam. After his return, he spent a while experimenting with Vietnamese, Thai, and Cambodian cooking.

A superior level of quality and performance Cons My fingers are still getting used to the sharp undersides of the cooking grids The Bottom Line This is the best grill you can buy for the money. Don't be without this Weber for a second longer than you have to. Full Review This is my first Weber. I spent years grilling on store brands and was comfortable replacing reasonably affordable grills after a few years of service. When my local hardware store offered free assembly, free delivery and a free tank of propane with any Weber purchase, I bit the bullet and purchased a Weber Gold "C." I wanted stainless all the way around, and I wanted a side burner. I opted for the propane version since I live in earthquake-prone Southern California, and I wanted an independent cooking source should we ever be without utilities for any reason. Where has this grill been all my life? The level of components, build and performance quality of this Weber is akin to hearing that satisfying "chuk" of a car door closing on a high-end Mercedes compared to the klink of a Hyundai. The lid is heavy, double-walled stainless - just beautiful. The burner knobs control the stainless burners perfectly. My first dinner - pork spareribs - came out beautifully. There was plenty of room for me to grill seven slabs of ribs and corn on the cob on the side - the surface area is bigger than you think. The juicy tender slabs were of restaurant quality - a good restaurant. Am I complimenting my own cooking? Yes! I am a good cook. Has this grill made my cooking better? Absolutely!

Pros

Easy installation, quality gauge construction, super product support. Cons Pricey. Wheels could be beefed up. The Bottom Line If you really enjoy cooking all types of foods outdoors, this grill makes it happen!! Full Review Personally, I love to cook and especially grill. Living in Florida, BBQing is an enjoyable year round function. I've thrown out two previous gas and charcoal grills over the past 4 years as simply put....junk (buy cheap, get cheap!!). After listening to my neighbor moan and groan about his piece of garbage gas grill I decided it was time for me to also...put up, or shut up. On line research and word of mouth testimonials turned my interests to the Weber line of gas grills. Deciding it was time to get the right cooking tool, I dropped close to 500 beans on a Weber Silver C and another 60 for a good (Weber)cover. Barring all the technical and engineering jargon it is soooo obvious that the people at Weber know what they're doing. Although my Weber Silver C wasn't cheap, the fact is the product works worth it's price as opposed to just being "functional." I think it's worth the money when a product does this well.

Championship Barbeque Competition Team
"On the Road Again" An awful lot of us like to cook barbeque. Even more folks like to eat barbeque. Some of us even like barbeque so much we will cook in competitions and occasionally judge a competition. But how many of us love barbeque so much we could spend 41 weekends a year on the road cooking with some of the best competition cooks in the world? I know of one couple who did just that last year and will probably do it again this year. Johnny and Trish Trigg of Texas are well known on the competition barbeque circuit and if there is a cook off going on between February and November, they are likely to be there. They are sometimes on the road for two to three months at a time. Barbeque is their retirement, traveling the country, seeing the sites, enjoying the road and most of all, cooking great barbeque! The team name is “Smokin’ Triggers” and they are one of the most successful teams on the barbeque circuit. And well they should be, cooking 40 or more contests a year. I have had the good fortune of cooking next to the Triggs on several occasions and despite being fierce competitors, they are some of the nicest folks I have ever met.

Anyone who wants to start BBQing or already does should buy a copy. You'll never want to cook indoors again!!
