Now known as a seaside resort and education centre (Hastings College), it is near the site of the Battle of Hastings, fought in 1066. In this battle, William the Conqueror defeated and killed Harold Godwinson, the last Saxon King of England, and destroyed his army, opening England to the Norman conquest. Hastings was one of the Cinque Ports, but its significance as a port declined after the Middle Ages and its main industry became fishing

The history of Bayeux tapestry
You may have heard of it, but do you know the history of the bayeaux tapestry...
Everyone has heard of the Bayeux tapestry, and most people know that it is a cartoon-type picture story of the Battle of Hastings. That is probably all that most people do know about Bayeux, however. If so, they are missing out on a very lovely French town with a great deal of history and much to offer the tourist. Bayeux has a very long history, and was quite a venerable town even when the Bayeux tapestry was made, nearly a millennium ago. Ptolomy mentions it around 120BC as an important market place. It was also nearby a place holy to the druids. bodyOffer(31998) Excavations have suggested that Bayeux was an important town under the Romans and under the Saxons. Its inhabitants suffered under the Viking Conquests of the 9th century. However, the Viking conqueror of the region married the daughter of the local noble, establishing a dynasty that led to the birth of William the Conqueror and, by descent, of the Kings of England for 150 years. Despite the popularity of Scandinavian religious worship, because of the number of conquering Vikings who remained in the area, Christianity eventually gained hold here as in the rest of France, leaving important buildings behind for the modern tourist. The Bayeux Tourist Information Office is located in one of the few authentic half-timbered houses remaining intact in Bayeux. These beautiful buildings are found all over Normandy and Brittany, the styles differing slightly from one location to the next. Depending on which town they are found in, these buildings may have wonderful carvings on the timbers themselves, or attached to them. One such building in Bayeux is the Grand Argouges Residence, which has carvings of the Virgin Mary and assorted saints all over its frontage.

The Romans considered the region one of wealth and prestige, and many of the British chieftains were quick to adopt Roman ways and accept their rule; the province was defined with the building of Hadrian's Wall. When the Romans departed 400 years later, they left a dream of unity; Alfred accepted the challenge of forging a kingdom and repelling the Vikings from a kingdom, a kingdom eventually shattered by the Normans. THIS PAGE IS UNDER CONSTRUCTION
Origin of the name Bray
Like many surnames, Bray originates as a place name (i.e. "Joe from Kokomo"). And as with many other families from the British Isles, the original ancestor come over with the Norman invasion of England in 1066.
To commemorate his victory William I ordered that a listing of the principle Norman knights be made (These were the leaders who had provided men, equipment, and supplies for the invasion. The list does not include the estimated 12,000 Men-at-Arms, yeomen, and others)and an abbey be built on the site of the Battle of Hastings. This building is called the Battle Abbey and the lists have become to be called the Roll of the Battle Abbey.
Among the knights listed is a Guillaume de Brai or William of Bray. Bray is the place name of a region of Normany known as Pays de Bray or Bray Country (see map above). The Coat of Arms displayed above is that of the Bray Country and not that of any known Bray ancestor.( WARNING: The webmaster lived in France for two years and has a great love of France, the French language, and the French people so you may learn more of our Norman origins than you ever wanted to know!

Anglo Saxon Viking Norman ... Railway Age A Brief History Of York Roman York Eboracum, the Roman name for the area now known as the City of York, was set up as a military camp in AD71, while conflict with a confederation of local Celtic tribes, the 'Brigantes' was fierce and bloody. After the Ninth Legion had subdued these troublesome barbarians the camp soon became a permanent fortress. Situated at the junction of the Rivers Ouse and Foss, the fortress enclosed over 50 acres and, at its height, held a force of some 6000 soldiers. In time a thriving civilian population grew up around the area and Eboracum became one of the leading cities in the Roman empire. Anglo Saxon York Around AD400 fighting in Gaul (France) put a great strain on Roman resources and the legions based in York were withdrawn to join the struggle. In the 5th century Germanic tribes of Anglo Saxons invaded Britain and overtook the city (despite a legendary recapture by King Arthur), renaming it Eoforwic, and making it the centre of the independent kingdom of Northumbria. During the 7th century, the Anglo Saxon warlord Edwin reintroduced Christianity to Northumbria and married a Christian princess from the South, she brought with her a priest called Paulinus who baptised Edwin and many of his subjects on Easter Day 627 in a small timber church. This modest building was the first cathedral of York Minster and Paulinus later became the city's first bishop.

The Battle of Fulford 20 September 1066 Fulford, near York, Yorkshire (then capital of Northumbria) Saxon troops of Mercia and Northumbria, under Earl Edwin and Earl Morcar, respectively vs. a Norse army under King Harald Hardrada, with the aid of Earl Tostig, brother of King Harold Godwinson of England King Edward the Confessor of England died in 1065. In his place, Harold, Earl of Wessex, took the throne. But the succession was not a smooth one; two other nobles claimed the crown; Harald Hardrada, King of Norway, and William, Duke of Normandy. While William gathered a fleet and waited for favourable winds to sail across the Channel to the south coast of England, Harald gathered an invasion force in the north. The very winds that kept William waiting impatiently in Normandy helped speed Harald's fleet of longships across the North Sea. To support him he had the exiled brother of King Harold, Earl Tostig.

This article is the first in a series which attempts to outline the development of the English Medieval castle and to describe its major features. Where possible, reference is made to existing castles within a comfortable day's journey of London so that the visitor who wishes to view a selection of English castles, but has limited time at his or her disposal, need not travel far from the capital. Perhaps the first issue to be dealt with is an answer to the question, "what is a castle?" The English Medieval castle, like its counterparts in Europe, is a unique phenomenon. Most buildings are created to fulfil a single, specific purpose: a church, a house, a factory, a school, a bank, a hotel etc. A castle, depending upon the status of the man who occupied it, could be variously, a military base, a seat of government, a court and a stronghold for the surrounding region. It could be any or all of the above but it was principally the private residence of its owner, his family and his dependents. England had known fortifications before the advent of the castle. The Iron Age peoples of Ancient Britain fortified hilltops with massive earthworks, such as Maiden Castle in Dorset, for tribal defense. The Romans dotted the countryside with innumerable military encampments and built the impressive chain of fortresses, known as the Saxon Shore forts (e.g. Portchester Castle, below)

Norman London
By Margaret Johnson After his victory at the Battle of Hastings, William the Conqueror 's army ravaged much of the country in order to beat the English into submission. Though he burnt Southwark, he strategically avoided London and waited at Berkhamsted for the city's officials to recognise him as King. The Londoners quickly acquiesced and their swift action led the new monarch to grant their city the first formal charter of his reign. This slight parchment document is undated but it would appear that it was made at Berkhamsted and only ratified later in London itself. In the late 1920s, A.H. Thomas, then Clerk of the Records at Guildhall, successfully identified a wax seal from the document as having been the second Great Seal used by King William. The charter shows remarkable generosity: William, King, greets William, Bishop, and Gosfregdh, Portreeve, and all the burgesses within London, French and English, friendly. And I give you to know that I will that ye be all those laws worthy that ye were in King Edward's day. And I will that every child be his father's heir after his father's day, and I will not suffer that any man offer you any wrong. God help you.
