Basketry
Carol Duvall Show : Episode CDS-1057

Suzye Ogawa embellishes her bronze sculptures with basketry techniques.
Ogawa uses traditional weaving, coiling and winding techniques to incorporate basketry into her work.
The Carol Duvall Show camera crew visits Suzye Ogawa in Santa Monica, Calif., to focus on how she uses basketry to augment her bronze sculptures. Using very traditional basketry materials and techniques to complete a design, Ogawa comes by her love of texture and detail naturally. She first began teaching herself sculpting and weaving techniques in her father's dentistry lab when she was a child, working with wax used to make dentures. Ogawa's process begins with choosing the type of wax she will use in sculpting her design. After sculpting the design, she sends it to a foundry for bronzing. She then uses a wax resist to give the piece an aged look. Once she achieves the desired color, she cleans off the wax.

Basketry
A common feature of most baskets, both ancient and modern, is that they are made from plant material that requires very little processing before being used. Grasses, reeds and palms need only to be dried before being woven into baskets or matting; willow stems are debarked and rattan (climbing palm) stems are cut into strips and dried. The main requirement for basketry fibres is that they should be flexible, strong and durable.
Baskets, or basketry products, fulfil a wide variety of uses in many cultures, particularly in Africa: baskets may serve as granaries or other food storage units, sieves, fish traps, bird cages, wall panels, items of furniture or even coffins. In more tropical parts of the world plants such as grasses, palms and rattans and members of the banana family are commonly used in basketry. In cooler, northern hemisphere countries, willows ( Salix spp. ) have been a major source of strong, flexible stems for basket making.

Miniature Braided and Coiled Sweetgrass Basket Many northeastern Native peoples use sweetgrass in their splint basketry and craft work, contributing to sweetgrass basketry traditions of the 1800s through today. By the height of the basket-making industry, these baskets were being made in innumerable shapes and for a myriad of uses, and continue to be woven by today's modern masters. These tiny lidded baskets made by us, are braided and then coiled into the shapes of animals or acorns, perfect for holding small treasures. Turtle

Twined Cornhusk Bottle In the fall, the Iroquois and other Native American women harvested corn from their gardens. To prepare the corn for storage, the husks were folded back from the ears and braiding, forming long ropes of husk with dangling ears of corn. The corn could be hung by these ropes to dry and later prepared for storage in baskets or earthen pits. The cornhusks were then used for many purposes, for cordage, for wrappers to cook food, for fire tinder, for stuffing mattresses or cushions, and for many woven items including mats, masks, shoes and baskets. Twined cornhusk baskets like this small one (measuring 3.5 ") are made by many eastern Woodland Native Americans, including the Iroquois. These baskets were used historically to store salt or tobacco. The Iroquois word for this basket is 'Gushada', which translates as into English as 'bottle'. Our twined cornhusk bottles have a stopper made from a corn cob to keep these bottles sealed.

Indian basketry subject of workshop Saturday, October 27, 2001 By Mary Thomas, Post-Gazette Art Critic "Our lives were bound the way baskets were bound together," American Indian author and basket maker Julia Parker says to explain the significance woven willow baskets had in Pomo society. Parker, who has been a cultural demonstrator at Yosemite National Park for 40 years, and her daughter Lucy, a prominent basket maker and teacher, will be in residence at the Society for Contemporary Craft, Strip District, Nov. 2-4. At 7 p.m. Nov. 2 they'll give a free slide lecture, and conduct a two-day workshop Nov. 3 and 4. Participants will use willow collected by the Parkers in California to make a Pomo Indian-style basket using traditional techniques. The Parkers also will talk about gathering and preparing materials, as well as the challenges to keeping this art form alive in the context of environmental changes, pollution and legal restrictions. To register for the workshop, call 412-261-7003 or e-mail
