basket, basketry, and basketwork A basket is a woven container made of such tough and bendable materials as twigs or strips (veneer) of wood, cane, rattan
http://www.artlex.com/ArtLex/b/basket.html
b asket basketry , and basketwork - A basket is a woven container made of such tough and bendable materials as twigs or strips ( veneer ) of wood cane rattan reed ... wire , or plastic , often with a handle or handles; or something that resembles a basket, especially in shape or function . Baskets are usually light in weight . Among the most commonly used basketry techniques are plaiting, twining, coiling, and imbrication . Basketry is the art or craft of making baskets, or objects woven like baskets, and is one of the oldest and most universal of crafts, practised among even the most primitive of peoples. It may be that basketry preceded the development of both textiles and fired pottery . Many baskets produced in Europe have, by long tradition , been produced using the rod-like twigs, harvested from willow trees (osier). Much furniture employing basketry techniques has been made using cane, rattan and rush. Examples: Jan Brueghel the Younger (Flemish, 1601-1678), A Basket of Flowers oil on wood panel , 18 1/2 x 26 7/8 inches (47 x 68.3 cm), Metropolitan Museum of Art, NY. Southwestern Indian Basketry
November 2-5, 1997
Old Roots, New Growth:
Adaptation and Innovation in Contemporary Southwestern Indian Basketry
D ubin Artist Fellow Kevin Navasie , a yucca ring basketmaker from Hopi First Mesa, worked at the IARC throughout the summer on his baskets, and assisted with the November 1997 Indian Basketry Convocation. This meeting brought together ten accomplished basketmakers from throughout the southwest who represented Santa Clara Pueblo, Navajo, Akimel O'Odam, Tohano O'Odam, Jicarilla Apache, and several different Hopi villages. The School commissioned a basket from each weaver for the permanent collection, provided a stipend, space in a twelve bedroom house so all the participants could live together, meals and transportation, and assisted with their study of the basketry collection here.
The convocation participants spent four days of intense discussion and debate on topics at the frontiers of this artform including the creative process; the past, present, and future of this ancient tradition; and styles, materials, and techniques. The goal of this convocation was to provide an opportunity for in-depth communication among these highly skilled artists whose work is among the finest, most creative being produced today. The School provided the format to facilitate and encourage productive discussion that broadened the horizons of individual participants and lead to the dissemination of information for scholarly and public audiences.

Basketry T he basketry collection is a well-used resource and represents all basketmaking cultures in the southwest throughout the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. For his comprehensive history of this oldest southwestern craft, Andrew H. Whiteford drew extensively on the IARC collection. Although this is by no means the largest collection of southwestern Indian basketry, numbering about 890 objects, it is an excellent, representative study collection, offering a rare opportunity to view this art form's stylistic development across cultures and time.
In the Jicarilla Apache collection four generations of basket makers from one family are represented, and the contemporary San Juan Paiute collection is perhaps the largest extant. The many uses of baskets for collecting and storing grains, carrying loads, cooking and serving food, holding water, and for many other purposes are reflected in the IARC collection. The School's basket collection provides the younger generations of basketmakers who use it an opportunity to associate traditional values from older pieces with their own new and imaginative baskets.
The collection is documented in Andrew Hunter Whiteford's Southwestern Indian Baskets (SAR Press 1988).

114. Sanger Depot Museum - Indian Baskets
A summary of the Yokut Indians basketry DESIGNS. The basketry of the Yokut Indians of Central California included CRADLE BASKETS
http://www.webcitypress.com/sanger/baskets.html
When you visit Sanger Depot Museum's Indian Room, you'll find a remarkable collection of basketry from the Yokut Indians who lived in the foothills above Sanger around Squaw Valley, Wonder Valley and Dunlap, California. This collection is reputedly the finest in existence in the United States. This collection of basketry was started when Oscar Brehler, a pharmacist in Sanger, bought the baskets from local Yokut Indians. As Brehler stated it:
"I had no idea of starting a basket collection when the Indians began coming into my store. I bought the baskets because I felt sorry for them. They needed money and all they had to sell were those baskets.
These baskets were an indispensable part of Yokut Indian life. Basket weaving was a skill that all Yokut women learned at an early age and was passed down from generation to generation. The baskets in this collection reflect the skillful craftsmanship of the Yokut basket weavers through the tightly woven fabric and ornate designs Baskets in this collection include:
A summary of the Yokut Indians'
BASKETRY DESIGNS The basketry of the Yokut Indians of Central California included: CRADLE BASKETS: These were the baskets the Yokut Indians carried their babies in. The designs on the back of the cradleboard signified the baby's gender. Slanted lines denoted a boy while diamonds denoted a girl. As a custom, the baby's father would hang the cradle board high in a tree after the infant outgrew it to instill similar growth in the child.

Handwoven traditional and contemporary basketry, including antler baskets and natural fiber baskets. Handmade soaps made from pure and natural oils, herbs, and essential oils.
http://www.fayesgiftsfromnature.com
My Story…
In my soaps, I use pure and natural ingredients... infused herbal oils, vegetable oils, essential oils, mountain spring water, organic herbs and botanicals.
I collect many natural items to incorporate into my basketry. Antlers, driftwood, roots, beargrass, Red Osier dogwood, willow, snowberry, alder, Rocky Mountain maple, cattail, cones, and other naturals often find their way into my baskets, which I feel give the baskets a native flavor. As natural items are each unique, each basket is a one-of-a-kind creation. Photographs of some of my Antler Baskets and Traditional Baskets are shown on my site, but all are made to order, allowing you to choose a basket that will fit your lifestyle and décor!
