Books Standard Baskets ... Links Willows Cultivated varieties of willow have been the basketry and furniture material of choice by basketmakers worldwide for centuries. There was a strong willow growing and willow basketry industry in the East and Mid-West United States in the nineteenth century. Willows are a strong and flexible material. The nature of willow to 'kink" gives tightness and resilience to the finished product. The ability to make strong willow baskets quickly and to exact dimensions filled the increased demand for functional containers during the Industrial Revolution. Types and Lengths of Willow Available The willows for sale have been imported from Europe. Four types of willow are available: "STEAMED BROWN" the brown rods are given an additional steaming to produce a deep brown color; "BROWN" the rods are dried with the bark remaining which has a greenish-brown hue; "BUFF"

Tai Gallery / Textile Arts represents over 30 Japanese bamboo artists. Most of these artists belong to one of two professional associations although a few are independent. The Nitten (Japan Fine Arts Exhibition) emphasizes art and sculptural beauty. The Nihon Kogeikai (Japan Craft Arts Association) emphasizes beauty in functional form and technical excellency. The Kogeikai works with the Agency for Cultural Affairs in the selection of craft artists to be named as Living National Treasures of Japan. Some established artists choose to not be associated with a professional association. Young artists who have not yet joined an association are also included in this group.
More information on the professional associations and many of the artists represented by Tai Gallery / Textile Arts can be found in Robert T. Coffland's book, Contemporary Japanese Bamboo Arts, available from Paragon Books and Amazon.com.

Welcome to Bear Canyon Galleries We are a Native American-owned online gallery featuring traditional and contemporary Indian art and crafts of the Southwest. We represent and support outstanding Native artists living and working in primarily in Arizona and New Mexico.
Southwestern Native American art combines an intrinsic spirit with timeless appeal. Many Indian artists use techniques and materials their ancestors did thousands of years ago. Others use techniques and materials that have evolved more recently. Today many Southwest Indians seek out and use a variety of materials to achieve their personal expression of art. It is this evolution of the art form that makes buying Native American art exciting.
Again, welcome to our site and gallery. We hope you enjoy these unique, handmade original works of art.

Ancient Egyptian basketry
Basketry is one of the most ancient crafts. The raw materials were widely available: grasses, above all the tough halfa varieties, sedges, reeds, stalks such as flax, twigs, leaves, most frequently of the date and doum palms, and occasionally leather [ ]. The various techniques of intertwining and tying together strands of plant material were quickly mastered once the principles were understood. The range of products included mattings, baskets, bags, and sandals which ... were very closely and beautifully stitched up of rush, and usually soled with leather. A small bundle of rush was wound round by a rush thread, which at every turn pierced through the edge of a previous bundle. Thus these successive bundles were bound together edge to edge, and a flat surface built up. This was edged round in the same way. In basket making exactly the same principle was followed, with great neatness. The rush sandals soled with leather, leather sandals alone, and leather shoes, were all used. The shoes seem to have been just originating at that period; two or three examples are known, but all of them have the leather sandal strap between the toes, and joining to the sides of the heel, to retain the sole on the foot ; the upper leather being stitched on merely as a covering without its being intended to hold the shoe on the foot. These soles are compound, of three or four thicknesses.

the craft of basketry in southern africa
E. M. Shaw, South African Museum
Sagittarius
Volume 3, Number 4 T he ancient and often beautiful craft of basketry is part of the wider technique of basketwork and is found practically all over the world. The basis of the technique is the interlacing or sewing together of two sets of elements. Very often both of them are flexible, but sometimes, as in wickerwork. only one is. There are several variations in the way this can be done.
Where the craft originated is not known, if in fact it was in any one place. The earliest archaeological records come from the Near East, where basketwork has been found in deposits as early as about 7000 years ago. In Europe and Peru the earliest finds are about 4500 years old. The basic techniques of these ancient examples are the same as those used all over the world today, because there are only certain ways in which individual elements can be turned into a fabric.

Wabanaki Basketry
A Local Legacy

The Penobscot, Passamaquoddy, Micmac, and Maliseet tribes of Maine are known as the Wabanaki Indians, or "People of the Dawn." They are known for their baskets that they weave with the leaves of sweet grass and thin strips of an ash tree (splints). These Indian tribes share a common story that tells how their ancestors emerged from an ash tree when the Creator split it with an arrow. So, for thousands of years, they have used ash splints to make baskets for both personal and community use. Today, many people collect them as beautiful works of art. The baskets fall into two categories: work baskets, which are used for gathering, storing, and transporting goods, and fancy baskets, ones that are crafted for the public, with decorative designs. Intricate shapes and designs and bold colors are used to make woven handkerchief baskets, powder-puff holders, purses, vases, wastebaskets, thimble baskets, candy dishes, knitting baskets, cradles, and fans. Mary Mitchell Gabriel, a member of the Passamaquoddy tribe, has spent more than 60 years perfecting the art of basket making. She is working to preserve this important cultural tradition by teaching her two daughters how to make the baskets. She is also teaching others through the Maine Cooperative Extension Service and the Maine Basketmakers Alliance.
