FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE OLYMPIC SPORT OF BASKETBALL STARTED AS YMCA GAME
Hoop contests at Sydney are legacy of James Naismith and his peach baskets CHICAGO
, Sept. 1 - As the world's top athletes come together once again in Olympic competition and the world focuses its attention on the Summer Games at Sydney, few contests will create more universal excitement than those on the basketball court. Basketball is a game that has riveted Americans and millions upon millions around the globe. It has lifted Michael Jordan and countless others to the celebrity stratosphere and inspired such terms as "March Madness," "Final Four" and America's "Dream Team" - and it all began with a YMCA and two peach baskets. In 1891, a YMCA program director named Luther Gulick asked James Naismith, a gym teacher at the YMCA Training School in Springfield, Mass., to invent a new indoor sport. Gulick wanted an activity to keep Y staff fit and limber during the winter months. Naismith hung two peach baskets from the bottom of an elevated running track, posted a list of 13 simple rules, and basketball was born. The YMCA students loved the game so much, they couldn't wait for Christmas break and the opportunity to teach it to others in their hometowns. The game quickly gained popularity nationwide. The first official rules were published in January 1892, and the rest is hoop history.

84. Michael Jordan Biography
him one of the greatest allaround basketball players in success in the NBA and theOlympics, and his in 1994 Jordan returned to professional sports, this time
http://www.ewsonline.com/sports/jordan/bio.html
Michael Jordan Biography
Michael Jordan, the best known athlete in the world, is a leading scorer in the National Basketball Association (NBA), who led the Chicago Bulls to many recent NBA championships. He is, by far, and will be for a time to come, the best basketball player in the history of the game. Jordan was born in Brooklyn, New York, and raised in Wilmington, North Carolina. He accepted a basketball scholarship from the University of North Carolina and as a freshman scored the winning basket in the 1982 NCAA championship game against the Hoyas of Georgetown. Jordan was selected college player of the year for the 1983-1984 season, and in 1984 he led the United States basketball team to a gold medal at the Olympic Games in Los Angeles. Stating that he had lost his desire to play professional basketball, Jordan announced his retirement prior to the 1993-1994 season. Initially noted for his scoring, his tenacious defensive play had made him one of the greatest all-around basketball players in NBA history. He had also become a worldwide celebrity due to his success in the NBA and the Olympics, and his numerous commercial endorsements. Early in 1994 Jordan returned to professional sports, this time as a baseball player. He signed a minor league contract with the Chicago White Sox of the American League (AL), reported to spring training, and was assigned to the team's minor league system. That summer he batted .202 with the Birmingham Barons, a class AA affiliate of the White Sox. Later in the year he batted .252 with the Scottsdale Scorpions in the Arizona Fall League. Jordan ended his retirement from professional basketball by rejoining the Bulls near the end of the 1994-1995 NBA regular season. In the 1995-1996 season he enjoyed another great year, leading the NBA in scoring with 30.4 points per game and being named league MVP. The Bulls also became the first NBA team to win 70 games in a season, finishing with 72 victories, and they went on to win the NBA championship title. Jordan was named MVP of the NBA finals, becoming the first player to earn the honor four times.

Watch my story in video Broadband Modem I work on the BBC's Xchange and Holiday programmes but I still find time to play basketball. I started when I was about 13 after seeing some of the national team players doing some mad moves at the Stoke Mandeville Games. It is a fast, exciting, action-packed sport and it's what I'm all about. Talk basketball on our message boards I began playing for fun but the better I got and the more I played for the Milton Keynes Aces, I realised I could play for the national team and go to the Olympics. Competing against the best in the world is what really drives me in the sport. I was really disappointed at not making the squads for the 1996 Atlanta Games and the European Championships the following year.

The United States joined the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) as a member in 1934 and it was the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) that FIBA first recognized as the organization that was responsible for USA teams in international competitions. Until 1974 when the Amateur Basketball Federation of the United States of America (ABAUSA) which later became USA Basektball was formed, various basketball organizations within the U.S. wrestled for control and recognition from FIBA and the U.S. Olympic Committee. A struggle for control of the USA's international teams developed in the 1960s between the AAU and other U.S. basketball organizations. It was in the early 1960s that an organization known as the Basketball Federation of the USA (BFUSA) was organized and began its push to be recognized by FIBA. Consisting of representatives from the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC), National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), the National Federation of State High School Athletic Associations (NFSHSAA) and the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), BFUSA continued to push for recognition and support in its effort to replace the AAU as the FIBA recognized basketball federation in the United States.
