It will also host the wheelchair basketball event during the Paralympic Games. The project includes the building of larger and better facilities required so that this venue is the 'heart' of the 2004 Olympics.
A general up-grade of facilities has been planned, including the renovation and modernization of outdoor facilities. Furthermore, the venue has to be up-graded to provide access to the handicapped.
The budget for the project totals 13 million euros.
The arch-shaped foundations for the "signature" glass/metal domed roof over the main Athens Olympic stadium (OAKA) are seen behind a construction worker at the site in November 2003. Work on the entire OAKA complex site is progressing at a faster pace since the beginning of the year following disquieting delays in 2003.

International rules and court dimensions differ slightly from U.S. standards. Still, the United States outclassed the rest of the world until 1972, when the Soviet Union defeated the U.S. team for the gold medal (despite American protests that the Soviets had been allowed to score a basket after the game had ended). In the 1980s, many nations achieved parity with the United States, which was still fielding a team of collegians. The U.S. Olympic Committee therefore assembled for the 1992 games a "Dream Team" composed of one collegian and the finest professional players, who handily won the gold medal. Why Too Many Olympic Sports Are Neither
By Jonathon Kahn
Posted Wednesday, July 12, 2000, at 8:30 PM PT
The modern Olympics has consisted of an eclectic and heady mix: archery and equestrian, track and field and swimming, wrestling and weightlifting. But where the Olympics' eclecticism was once a strength, today's version of diversity is its greatest flaw. While people often complain about the opening up of the Olympiad to professionals or the lavishing of vast inequities of attention, prestige, and money on different sports, the real problem is the inclusion of two (occasionally overlapping) categories: 1) Events, often high-profile, for which the Olympics is not that sport's premier competition. These are nothing more than gussied-up exhibitions. 2) Events that are called sports but really aren't. Call these the bogus or silly sports. The combination of the two does ruthless damage to the notion that the Olympics celebrates world-class contests of athletic excellence. Continue Article Equally ridiculous are the bogus events. Everyone's favorite is synchronized swimming, which

Origins

Basketball was invented in 1891 by Canadian James Naismith as a way of keeping youth busy while they were waiting for the baseball season to start. The first players used peach baskets nailed to the wall and a soccer ball. The new game caught on quickly, and by 1936 had become an official Olympic sport. The Canadian team won the first silver medal. The first women's Olympic basketball tournament was held in Montreal in 1976.
The Sport
Basketball is played by two teams of five players each. Unlimited substitutions are allowed at any break in the game. The Olympic tournament is made up of 12 men's teams and 12 women's teams, which are divided into two pools for round-robin play. The top four teams from each pool advance to the direct-elimination medal round.
The game is played on a court 15m x 28m, with 45cm diameter netted baskets at each end that are 3.05m off the ground. The object of the game is to shoot the ball into the basket defended by the other team. Players are not allowed to use body contact either to gain access to the basket or to prevent an opposing player from gaining access.
Players advance the ball up the court either by passing to teammates or by dribbling (bouncing the ball while walking or running). They are not allowed to hold the ball while moving up the court. Once a player stops dribbling, he/she may not resume dribbling, but must pass or shoot, although it is permitted to pivot, keeping one foot planted. To keep the game moving quickly, each team is allowed 30 seconds in which to shoot the ball at the basket. If a shot has not been taken when that time elapses, the ball turns over to the other team. If the ball goes out of bounds, the team whose player last touched the ball loses possession and the opposing team returns the ball to play from the point where it went out.
