    History
U.S. teams demonstrated basketball at the Olympics in 1904, 1924, and 1928. When the game became an official Olympic sport in 1932, its inventor, James Naismith, was given the honor of tossing the opening jump ball for the first game. The United States completely dominated Olympic basketball competition through 1964, winning 54 consecutive games, often by as many as 50 or 60 points. In 1968, though, most of the top college players passed up the Olympic trials because they didn't want to jeopardize their professional careers, and Yugoslavia was generally favored to win the gold medal over the young, little-known U. S. team. However, the Americans extended the winning streak to 63 games, beating Yugoslavia, 65-50, for the championship. The streak went to 71 games in 1972, but it ended in the Gold Medal game against the Soviet Union, amidst much furore. The U. S. led, 50-49, with three seconds to play. Inbounding the ball from under their own basket, the Soviets twice threw it the length of the court without scoring, but both times the officials ruled that the scoreboard clock had to be reset. On the third try, the court-length pass succeeded and a Soviet player scored the winning basket. The U. S. appealed the decision but lost, and the team unanimously voted not to accept the silver medal.

Basketball is played on a rectangular court, which has a hard surface (often sprung wood) and a clear height above of at least 7m. The court is marked with a centre circle, having a radius of 1.8m and two "keyhole" shaped zones at each end. The baskets are solid iron rings, 45cm in diameter, from which a net is suspended and behind the rings are mounted blackboards. The ball is pressurised synthetic or leather, weighing a maximum of 650g and with a circumference of 78cm.
    The Rules
At the Olympic Games Basketball is played under the International Basketball Federation rules. There are five players per team. Games last 40 minutes, consisting of two 20 minute halves with a 15 minute interval at half time.
Play begins with a "jump ball" where the ball is tossed in the air and two opposing players must leap up in an attempt to tap it to their team. All goals score two points, except for those taken from the free throw line after a foul. These score one point. A long distance throw (outside the key) scores three points. When a goal is scored, the opposition are given a throw-in from the endline for play to resume.

Basketball debuted at the 1904 Saint Louis Olympic Games, but not as an official sport. The rules and equipment changed rapidly in the first few years. By 1932, the sport was so popular that an international governing body was needed to regulate the game. Thus, the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) was born. In 1935, the International Olympic Committee recognized basketball as one of the world's major sports. During the 1936 Berlin Olympic Games, held under Hitler's reign, basketball was first played as an Olympic sport. It was played outdoors on sand courts. Women's Olympic basketball was first introduced in 1974 during the Montreal Olympic Games. - Matt Blair Olympic Basketball Fun Facts -Compiled by Matt Blair The 1964 Uruguayan team in Tokyo featured the four Duarte brothers: Ricardo, Enrique, Raul, and Luis.
