Lithuania at the Olympics Lithuania takes third consecutive bronze medal
Lithuania rebounded from a heartbreaking semifinal loss to the United States of America to defeat Australia 89-71 in the men's basketball bronze medal game Sunday at the Sydney SuperDome. In a rematch of the 1996 Atlanta bronze medal game, Lithuania made 66.7 per cent of its shots in the first half to take a 51-35 lead into half-time.
Lithuania increased its lead in the second half to maintain its record of winning a medal in every Olympic basketball tournament since the break-up of the Soviet Union in 1991 enabled it to compete as an independent nation. Saulius STOMBERGAS (LTU) topped the scorer's sheet with 28 points for the match. The heavily-favoured US team advanced to the final of the men's Olympic basketball tournament on Friday but only after narrowly escaping a humiliating defeat by Lithuania.
The Americans won an 85-83 victory after the tightest possible finish. The United States, which have not lost in Olympic competition since they began sending NBA players to the competition in 1992, jumped out to a 12 point halftime lead but Lithuania stormed back in the second half.
Trailing by one point with 10.8 seconds left, Lithuania fouled Phoenix Suns all-star Jason Kidd who hit only one of two foul shots to give Lithuania one last chance.

The History of the Olympics:
1992 - Barcelona, Spain The first Olympic Games in three decades without a boycott was hosted by the Spanish city of Barcelona. Athletes from most of the new countries of the former Soviet Union competed as the "Unified Team" and for the first time since , Germany competed as a unified country. South Africa also rejoined the Games having eliminated apartheid Baseball, a demonstration sport in earlier Games, was added to the Olympic roster. The amateur rule that was overturned for the 1988 Olympic Games , allowed the United States to send the "Dream Team," a basketball team made up of a number of the most famous U.S. professional basketball players, to the Olympics. Gymnast Vitaly Sherbo of Belarus won six gold medals.

The History of the Olympics:
1972 - Munich, West Germany The 1972 Olympic Games will probably be best remembered for the murder of eleven Israeli Olympians . On September 5, a day before the Games were to begin, eight Palestinian terrorists entered the Olympic Village and seized eleven members of the Israeli Olympic team. Two of the hostages were able to wound two of their captors before they were killed. The terrorists requested the release of 234 Palestinians that were being held in Israel. During a failed attempt at rescue, all of the remaining hostages and five of the terrorists were killed, three terrorists were wounded. The IOC decided that the Games should go on. The following day there was a memorial service for the victims and the Olympic flags were flown at half staff. The opening of the Olympics was postponed one day. The decision of the IOC to continue the Games after such a horrific event was controversial.

Two sport stars are not as common as they were in the earlier part of the century, but you can find at least one at almost every university. Most of them are football players competing in track during the off season to stay in shape. Some basketball stars also excel on the gridiron. But there aren't too many athletes who get the chance to contribute in the Final Four and participate at the major levels in other sports, too.
The following is a chronological list of key Final Four players who also showed their talents in other athletic endeavors: Multi-Talented Final Four Participants Year(s) Player(s) Team Howard 'Red' Hickey Arkansas Hickey, a first-team All-Southwest Conference forward, was an efficient enough tackle in football to earn a spot on the Razorbacks' all-decade team. A lineman for six seasons in the NFL with two different franchises from 1941 through 1948, Hickey was a member of the 1945 champion Cleveland Rams. He coached the San Francisco 49ers for five years from 1959 through 1963, compiling a 27-27-1 record. Fred Sheffield, Bob Lewis, Herb Wilkinson
