The Summer Paralympic Games are the ultimate competition for world class elite athletes with a disability and as such are linked to the Olympic Celebration each quadrennium. The Paralympic Games, in terms of complexity, duration and the number of competitors, are second only to the Olympic Games.
The fundamental philosophy guiding the Paralympic movement is that athletes with disabilities should have opportunities to pursue their goals in sport equivalent to those of non-disabled athletes. Athletes who compete in the Paralympics set their sights on the dream of winning a gold medal, are committed to strenuous training regimes and meet strict qualifying standards to be selected to their national team. The Paralympic Games represent a commitment to excellence that allows elite athletes to achieve their personal best. The Paralympic Games exemplify the Olympic ideal of participation and sportsmanship.

The History of the Olympics Since the Olympic games go way back to the early Greeks, to do an entire history on one page is a bit overwhelming. So, I'll give you a brief summation of how it all began, and then provide some further links for additional information. So, how and why did it all begin? In ancient Greece, they often combined religious festivals with sporting events, to honor certain gods. The Greeks held the following: The Pythian Games
The Nemean Games
The Isthmian Games
The Olympic Games It was the last one, the Olympics, that were held for the Greek God Zeus and were also the most popular with the people. The first game is said to be held at Olympia, Greece in 776 B.C. and has been held every 4 years since = 1,168 years! Then, Greece came under the rule of the Roman Empire and the Olympic games were declined, to the point where they actually declined in 393 B.C. by the Christian Roman Emperor, Theodosius I, who objected to what he felt were some "pagan rites" associated with the games. In the beginning, the Olympic games were confined to just one day and one event. That event was a footrace that was the length of the stadium. Soon, additional races were added as the popularity grew, as well as discus and javelin throws (tosses), broad jumps, boxing, wrestling, chariot racing and a pentathlon. The pentathlon was composed of 5 different track and field competitions.

Basketball Indoor Outdoor Discontinued Olympic Sports Basketball was first played in 1891, at Springfield College , Mass. Its purpose was to keep the students busy during winter months. The story has it that a Canadian physical education teacher, Dr James Naismith, got the idea for basketball from throwing a scrunched-up ball of paper into a basket. It is said that the first basketball game in history was played with fruit baskets. The sport developed quickly, as precise rules were formulated and equipment was improved. Consequently, Basketball won over fans in the States, and soon after was attracting attention internationally. It spread and became more popular around the world, leading to the creation, in 1932, of the International Basketball Federation (FIBA). Basketball made its debut at the 1904 Olympic Games in St. Louis as an exhibition sport. FIBA was officially recognised by the IOC Feb. 28, 1935 . This paved the way for the sport to be included in the program of the Olympic Games at the 1936 Berlin Games. The inventor of basketball, Naismith himself, threw the jump ball for the inaugural game. Women's basketball was introduced into the Olympics at the 1976 Montreal Games, this first tournament being won by the USSR, which, along with the USA, went on to dominate gold medals.

Since then the Olympic Council of Malaysia, as it is known since 1964, has been participating in all the Olympic Games, except the 1980 Moscow Olympic Games.
The Olympic Contingent of the Federation of Malaya to the 1956 Melbourne Olympic Games comprised six athletes, two swimmers, 18 Hockey players, three Weightlifters and four shooters. There was only one female athlete in the Contingent, Ms. Annie Choong, who participated in Athletics. Amongst the Olympians were Koh Eng Tong, the 1950 British Empire Weightlifting gold medallist in the Featherweight Division and Tan Kim Bee, the silver medallist in the Light Heavyweight Division. The Hockey team finished 9th out of 12 teams. The Chef de Mission was Mr. H.M. De Souza (Hockey) and the Flag Bearer was Tan Eng Bee (Weightlifting)

"You sir, are the world's greatest athlete." Incidentally, Jim is purported to have replied, "Thanks, King" to the Swedish monarch, a story, true or not, which itself has become part of the Thorpe saga. Ever since, the Olympic decathlon champion or world record holder has been dubbed "the World's Greatest Athlete." And rightly so, since the decathlon is the only objective test of all around athletic ability. Decathletes must contest ten separate events and have those performances tallied on a standard scoring table. The decathlon measures basic sporting ability like jumping, sprinting and throwing. Within the backdrop and rules of track and field, decathlon champions must exhibit, the 4 S's: speed, spring, strength and stamina. Since 1912 great decathlon champions like Bob Mathias, Rafer Johnson, Bruce Jenner and Daley Thompson and others have become household names. But they all owe much to the legend of Thorpe.

Jesse Owens rises above the Nazi propaganda
Berlin was awarded the 1936 Olympics in 1931, two years before the Nazi party came to power. Adolf Hitler immediately seized on the games as an opportunity to showcase the efficiency and might of his regime. There were doubts in many quarters about the wisdom of attending the Berlin Olympics. An alternative, to be called the "People's Olympics," was actually scheduled for Barcelona, but that plan was destroyed by the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War. In the United States, a move to boycott the Olympics was led by Judge Jeremiah T. Murphy, president of the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU). Murphy and his supporters were concerned chiefly about Nazi anti-Semitism, since Jewish sports clubs throughout Germany had been shut down. However, in 1935 the AAU voted by a narrow margin to sanction participation and Murphy resigned. He was replaced by Avery Brundage, who went to Germany on an inspection tour and reported that everything looked just fine. Despite the preliminary doubts and the growing international tensions that were to culminate in World War II, the leaders of the Third Reich were at pains to make these Games a resounding success and welcomed more athletes (4069) from more countries (49) than any previous Olympics to compete in events from August 1 - 16.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE OLYMPIC SPORT OF BASKETBALL STARTED AS YMCA GAME
Hoop contests at Sydney are legacy of James Naismith and his peach baskets CHICAGO
, Sept. 1 - As the world's top athletes come together once again in Olympic competition and the world focuses its attention on the Summer Games at Sydney, few contests will create more universal excitement than those on the basketball court. Basketball is a game that has riveted Americans and millions upon millions around the globe. It has lifted Michael Jordan and countless others to the celebrity stratosphere and inspired such terms as "March Madness," "Final Four" and America's "Dream Team" - and it all began with a YMCA and two peach baskets. In 1891, a YMCA program director named Luther Gulick asked James Naismith, a gym teacher at the YMCA Training School in Springfield, Mass., to invent a new indoor sport. Gulick wanted an activity to keep Y staff fit and limber during the winter months. Naismith hung two peach baskets from the bottom of an elevated running track, posted a list of 13 simple rules, and basketball was born. The YMCA students loved the game so much, they couldn't wait for Christmas break and the opportunity to teach it to others in their hometowns. The game quickly gained popularity nationwide. The first official rules were published in January 1892, and the rest is hoop history.

Two Olympiads later, in 1912, the same year Los Angeles Times columnist Owen Bird nicknamed USC's athletic teams the Trojans, USC freshman Fred Kelly won the university's first gold medal, for the 110-meter high hurdles, and launched an unprecedented winning streak for USC. At least one USC athlete has come home with a gold medal in virtually every Olympiad since, and USC claims more Olympians than any other university in the country.
